I have never been to DCA because the last time I was in Cali it had just opened and I was more interested in spending the day at DL. But I really like the look of what they are building, so it'll def be on my list for next time.
Disney is currently doing a four year refurbishment on all of DCA (look it up online on Wikipedia under the Disney's California Adventure Article) that started this year (2009, if you are reading this later than it was posted) and is therefore expected to end in 2012. Paridise Bay will be filled up sometime between that time period, but until then we will have to wait. Just in case you are wondering, they removed the water so they can access the Sun Wheel to refurbish it into Mickey's Fun Wheel, which will now feature Mickey's Face in the place of the Sun, which will be moved behind the loop on California Screamin' -- sort of an oversize trade-off of parts (the Wheel has already been changed, re-opening in early May). Once the water is replaced, they are going to add a new nighttime spectcular based on the television series 'Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color' over it, whlst on the other ends of the park Carsland will be added and Hollywood Pictures Backlot will be no more after its name is changed to Hollywoodland, a nod to the Hollywood of old as featured in DHS at WDW. Or so I have heard. Sounds exciting -- I can't wait to see it on my trip next year!
Actually they emptied the Lagoon to also put in place all of the water jets and gas jets plus lights that will be needed for the all new Light and Water show. In fact we were there just last month and here is a photo I took of the Lagoon.
These photos were taken on July 18th and shows the progress of the Lagoon. Oh ya, this may be your last view of the ORANGE STINGER too. They are in the process of tearing it down.
Oh my gosh! It looks horrible! I am so glad I'm not vacationing there right now. I think it may change our plans about going next year. Any idea how long it's going to look like that? We were there when they were constructing TSMM, and there were walls up all around the place. However, it wasn't distracting in the least. THAT is distracting. Wow! So, no more orange stinger? Is it coming down for good or are they going to move it?

How do you say this? IT'S HISTORY. The last time I saw it running was last month. As far as planns for visiting, if you want to wait until ALL construction is done, then you will have to wait until sometime in 2012, not sure of a month yet. If you are referring to the Lagoon, they told me on Saturday that it appears to be early to mid-spring 2010. If you remember where the theater was for "Golden Dreams", starring Whoopie Goldburg, well, it too is history. Last month it was there, this past weekend, it was all torn down except for the round tower out in front. This will now become the 'home' to the new Little Mermaid attraction. Also lost to construction is the Corn Dog Castle, the Sunglass Shackand the Souvenir 66 stand. In case anyone is wondering, McDonolds is no longer apart of Disneyland. Both McDonald French Fry outlets at Disneyland and the Burger Invasion in California Adventure is no longer. Disney and McDonalds agreed not to renew their contact.
I can say it because it does look horrible. And I know that things change, but I'm glad I'm not there right now. It sort of brings the "outside" world into "the" world. Awwww, I liked Souvenir 66. Oh well. It's going to be neat to see the changes and see what happens over the next couple of years. Thanks for posting!
That was our thought as well. The Cast Member we spoke to kept telling us it would be very different, but we couldn't see it.
I totally agree about the enterance looking like DHS. The CM I spoke to said the same thing about it being different. Who knows. I did ask about the 'car' ride in CarsLand and ask if it were like TEST TRACK back in EPCOT and was told that it is even better than that because of improvements in technology. We'll just have to wait and see on both counts.
When we went the kids wanted to ride in that orange thing with the swings.. I was like uhhhh...Too scary for me.. DH went on with them and I guess they had a blast..LOL
Wow! I can't get over how different it looks. I, too, am glad I won't be there until the lagoon work is done. It is very cool to see the difference though. Thanks for posting the pic.
