Is the Indiana Jones spike room...

still in operation?
What I believe used to happen was that there was a bamboo pole you could pull and the spikes would drop down a few inches. All you would have to do was point and scream, and some poor person would believe the ceiling was coming in. Apparently, a big problem was that people would pull on the stick repeatedly, trying to get the spikes to lower even more. That would jam the mechanisim, which would in turn lead to the pole being removed for a few days.
Is the pole still there? Or has it been taken out for good?

It depends on the day you go. We were there just last month and we found that most of the "tricks" were working. The spikes didn't raise and lower, but the bamboo pole was pulled and they made it sound like something was going to crash on us.
Of course the rope into the well was working too.

I've not seen the bamboo pole working in a long while. I have caught the rope working, but even that's hit and miss nowadays....

Same here, I've noticed the well working most of the time, but I haven't seen or heard the spike room working in years...literally!

I do not quite understand this whole 'spike room' idea. Not that I have never been to Disneyland and not that I have not done my reading, it is just that I do not quite understand how what I have read to be a ride has a walk-through part. I read in a Birnbaum's guide that the experience lasts an hour, and I assumed there would be something like this judging by the remainder of the description (which, by the way, was too vague for the information I needed). Could someone just clarify what this whole walk-through part is? I am sure some other people would appriciate it as well, and if not, it would help me know what will happen in advance for my Disneyland trip next year.

Roboman, like the majority of the other popular rides in DL and WDW the spike room is part of the theming in the queue area. Just some fun touches and things to do/look at while waiting in line so that you don't get bored before you get on the ride part.
