What a delightful suprise. I get home and find out I have a package from Canada. Wasn't sure who it was from. But it turns out that it contains chocolate and is from Goofy Mom!!! Thanks so much. That is so nice. Now I have my tea cups from Danielle and chocolate from you!!! And I just found out that Disney Characters are gonna be at one of the Christmas Tree lightings here!! Yahoo.

I know what I want to buy dh for Christmas.....
but I am not sure how I can do it without him knowing!
I want to buy him a Wii.
The thing is, we have been diligently saving, so any money I take out of the
bank, he will know about.
We are not using our charge card since we paid it off. (he would have a cow if I bought him a gift with the charge card!:smirk:)
The only way I think I could do this and pull it off, is to ask one
of the boys to buy it for me, and then after Christmas, pay them back.
Do you think that is asking too much?
It sure is hard to be sneaky around here!:o

So Zack had preview night for the fall musical last night and we were late getting home. The puppy had been stuck inside for a LONG time and was absolutely beside himself to see us. He was hopping around, running in circles, jumping on and off the bed; generally acting crazy. I bent over to pick something up at the same moment that Barnaby Jones was launching himself torpedo style onto Z's bed. His little puppy skull cracked hard into the side of my head to the point of tears on my part (puppy seemed just fine :tongue:) It's nearly midnight, I've got an egg-sized lump developing, I'm starting to feel nauseous, and I'm convinced that I'm going to drop dead of a subdural hematoma. Who gets a freakin' concussion from their puppy? Krazy Karen that's who! I stayed up until about 1AM wondering if they'd cancel Thursday night's performance if I was found dead the following morning. Drama, drama, drama for the West Coast drama queen! :D

Would you want a Gas Gift Card?

So far I've gotten GC for Dunkin Donuts, Yankee Candle and some Bath and Body Works products (their daughter's told me their favorite scents). Various amounts for the coaches depending upon their "level" (Head, Assistant, Junior).

I know that I would use one - what about all of you?

background: As most of you knowJamie & Brendan both play tuba in their high school band, Jamieis section leader. Every year the band director holds a deorate your tuba contest.. when Jamie was a freshman he won for hving Santa going down the chimney (bell of tuba) we even used some old fireplace decorations.. really cute! Last year Jamie did't put his heart into it & let his GF do it & she did a felt snowman (ugly)

Brendan did a "Christmas story' theme complete with wooden leg lamp, it was put together quick & looked like it too!

neither won!

This year they want to do Snow miser & heat miser.. I think we've got the basics down but would appreciate any advice on how to make it work..
I was thinking white & red fur for their hair & their face on the tuba bell.. or is that too much face?? & if not.. how do I do that? I was going to take the face to Kinkos & have them enlarge it??
would love to hear your ideas on tweaking it or even if you've got a BETTER idea.. I'm all ears...
BTW this has to be done by Saturday morning... UGH!!

We're travelling to Dallas in a couple of weeks, and I'm trying to find a reliable transportation company to rent either a large van or a limo to get us from the airport (DFW) to our hotel.

I went to the airport's website for a list of their recommended companies and it's about 6 pages long - they sure recommend a lot of companies!

Does anyone know of, or in the off chance that maybe someone has used, a good company to schlep some tired women and their Irish Dancing daughters to their hotel? And believe me, we've sunk so much money into dancing, I'm not necessarily looking for the cheapest company - just a reliable one. What's a few more dollars at this point???:p

Well here you all go!! Just a couple of shots, gonna try to get a few more tomorrow!

The Famed Burled Arch that is the end of the Iditarod - they move it out to the center of the road to mark the finish line.

The locals claim this is the largest gold pan in the world, but I hear there is one larger in Canada somewhere. The three statues are the Three Lucky Swedes....they disccovered gold on the beaches 'round here.

These are just a few of the musk ox from the herd the Chief managed to find for me to take pics of!! Been in AK since 1969 and had never seen them in the wild!!

Christmas Tree advice needed: real or artificial?

I didn't bring our tree from home when we moved thinking hubby might put it up for himself. I bought a pre-lit tree this year as I am a bit obsessed about lighting the tree and do a very good job of it (did it for a department store one year even!). It is time-consuming, however, so I opted to buy a pre-lit thinking they were lit as carefully as I do it. I wasn't having any success locally so I ordered one online. The kind I really wanted only came in a 6.5 foot version (he have 10-12 foot ceilings here). The lighting job is HORRIBLE and I will be returning it just for that (wires stretched when the branches are down, complete safety fail).

Here's the thing, should I buy another artificial tree and suck it up and light it myself even though it will be short for the room or should I splurge this year for a REAL tree that is taller? DDs have never had a real tree, so I'm leaning that direction, but I haven't bought one in 15 years, so I don't have any idea how much I'm looking at. I've browsed some websites and won't be able to do a cut-your-own here in FL, I'm very particular about the kind of tree and don't care for varieties that grow locally. I'm a Frasier Fir kinda gal. ;)

Just like in the previous thread, post something that you are thankful for and try not to repeat what you've posted before.

I am thankful for my job. We've been through some major changes here in the last two years and things are still really screwed up and morale is down. But I'm thankful that I have a secure job with benefits in this economy when so many don't.

I am in a state of amazement. I just found out that you have to have a license to own a tv set in the United Kingdom. That just amazes me. And some people have actually been arrested for watching their favorite shows without paying. Of course when they go to jail they can watch tv. (Come on officer hurry up and arrest me--Theres a rerun of American Idol in a half hour). This planet just amazes me.

I was reading the post on senior year expenses and I am curious.

I managed to get three children through 12 years of public school and never had to pay a fee to the school. We did have to pay small amounts for some extra field trips through the gifted and talented program. I know some schools are charging a fee to play sports but I believe it is nominal.

So what are "school fees" people have spoken about? I'm also wondering if this is a regional thing. and what happens if you can't afford them?

I just can't get over all these expenses! First it was the "registration fees" - for public school mind you, about $150. Then there were senior pictures. We did the cheapest sitting possible, $25 plus "proof" deposit of $20, ordered only 4 x 5s for $45 (choke choke!) when most packages were $150 and up, now the cap and gown, $35 for rental, parents ad in yearbook $75 (I'm skipping this one), announcements and namecard inserts $50-100 - are these really necessary?, thank yous, etc. I can't even remember what else. Oh yeah, $40 a pop for college apps. I need another job just to get through senior year. :eek:

So my little guy woke me up bright (not even) and early this morning and I was kinda sleepy since he has also been up at night teething. :( We get our milk delivered (I know) on mondays and I peeked out our front door window to see if it was there and I saw what I thought was doggie poo on my front mat. There were some tracks in the snow but also some from the milk guy so it was hard to tell how big the tracks were. It was not the nicest thing to find there first thing. So I got my little guy breakfast in his highchair and our dogs out in the backyard for their morning duties and I went to clean up in the mess. When I opened the door to look for real I could tell it was not poo but bunny guts instead. :eek: Tons of fur too! I just threw the whole mat in the trash!!! When my husband got up he went out to investigate. He found fox or small coyote tracks all over the front yard. No blood so I guess it brought the snack from somewhere else. Thank goodness. We have tons of bunnies all over our neighborhood but I have never seen one dead or in this condition much less on my front porch! A yucky morning.

My DH has been warning our DD17 to clean her room for weeks now. He said he would clean it for her if she didn't. I don't think she believed him. She hasn't touched it. I mean clothes everywhere, no place to walk. Well today he looked in there and got mad. He took every piece of clothes, shoes, papers etc. and piled it on her bed. :eek: She just got home from work, never said a word!! Just took everything off. :crazy: She goes to college and has a part time job but to not touch it even though you've been told really set him off. :mad: She doesn't dare say anything to him so I'm sure I'll hear about it when he goes to work tomorrow. :mad:

Just a little chuckle I wanted to share with you all.

Brent is an avid Bruce Springsteen fan! While I am a huge fan too, he has got me beat by miles! When my incredible hubby found that he was going to be close to home he promptly got us tickets! Ahhhhh Date night for us!! Yep, I am certainly in! While I am a fan and was trilled I never imagined what a great time I would have! That man is incredible! 60 years old and ROCKS THE HOUSE!!! It was definatly one of the most memorable nights of my life. I had such a great time with Brent!

Now the "chuckle" part. Bruce comes out and yells "hello ohio!". ....which is great........except, we are in MICHIGAN! Some people booooed him a lil, he looked baffled but went on. About the third time he said it his guitarist came up and whispered something in his ear about his error! He was truley embarassed. He took it all in amazing stride tho. Laughed it off with a few jokes and rocked on!
He said it was "every front mans nightmare" and "it took me 40 years to (beeeeeeep) -mess- that one up!"

I can't believe it made the front home page of Yahoo and the Detroit Free Press. Here is a link to the article!

My two friends that I eat lunch with every Friday (for years, they each have a son Kathryn's age and all of the kids went to preschool together) told me this story:

At the High School their sons attend, on Monday, a child in EACH classroom got up and walked out (student #1). After a few minutes, each teacher asked a second child (student #2) to go check on #1.
Student #2 came back in a few minutes, and announced that #1 had Over Dosed in the bathroom and was either dead or on the way to the hospital and was having CPR performed at last known time.
The kids in each classroom started crying and some got ill. There was much sadness for the rest of that class period. Towards the end of the period, each teacher announced that it was all a hoax in an attempt to get the kids to understand what effects drug use can have on the lives of others.

Their sons and the sons' girlfriends were all very upset as were the rest of the kids. Some of them are still having trouble with this.
I feel it was rather irresponsible of the administration to pull this stunt: what if something like it REALLY happens later? No-one will believe the child who comes in and says "Johnny just ODed - someone call 911" And I KNOW it happens in schools - one of my HS classmates ODed and almost died at the school, in the Gym locker room.
This was not the idea of the administration, but the Anti-drug club. BUT - the adults in charge and the school administration approved it.

I was right! DH's cousin has no clue what my name is! Or rather, he didn't. Don't know if he'll remember anyway.
He and DH were in the car yesterday, and DH asked him if he knew my or the kids' names. Cousin said "No, I just call them 'Hun'" DH asked why he never said anything and he said it was never a big deal. Well, DH says - "It bothers TERESA, my WIFE - so it is a big deal." - "Oh, Teresa, like your sister?" "yeah, just like my sister"

So, yesterday, he called me Teresa ONCE. Last night and today he called me "Hun". He called Lauren "LaurA" and when talking about Kathryn, said "the other one".
DH reminded him again, and he said - "It's okay, I don't mind."
Well, I DO!!
Lauren told him her name was NOT Laura and she refused to answer to it. The cousin says - "Well, it's the same name, isn't it?" Lauren told him since it was the same thing, he could say Lauren.

I am vindicated!! DH told me there was no way Ed didn't know my name - after all, he's stayed with us for weeks a year for at least the last 14 years!

The head of maintenance and the chief financial person for our district has decided that a great way to save money is to not allow the room temperatures to go above 65 degrees. All the kids are freezing, and frankly, so are the teachers.

To go around the new rule we are passing around an ice pack and a roll of tape. Why? Because when you tape the ice pack to the thermostat it brings the reading down and the heater then kicks on. :D

Incidentally it was my husband who came up with that idea. You know, the same guy who won't let me turn the thermostat up to 68 at home! :rofl2:

Had to trave to Nome (Alaska) for work. When I got here they were cleaning up after a storm that dumped around 16 inches of snow on the town the day before I got here. Then off and on all the first day, it snowed a bit here and a bit there. And according to the weather channel, it is suppposed to snowpretty much for the next week or so. That is pretty much how long I am here. Good grief, I hope I don't get snowed in in Nome, that would not be good!!!

When were flying in, it got a little hairy!! The plane takes a bit of a round about route. Anchorage to Kotzebue, Kotzebue back to Nome. So on the Kotzebue to Nome leg of the trip, the turbulance got bad, I mean really bad. Even with my seatbelt, I found air between me and the seat a couple of times!!!! Really don't want to experience that again!!!

Well, keep Nome in your thoughts....if anyone wants snow, I know where to find it! Maybe I can send it your way!!:p:p

I suspect this is an annual discussion, but I'll start it for 2009 anyway.
What do you do for teacher gifts for the holidays?

DD spends as much time with the enrichment teacher as her own classroom teacher. And her favorite subjects are math and art, so it seems like we end up buying for everyone -- though I try to do a little more for the main teacher and the enrichment one.

In the past I've tried to do $5 gift cards with a cute package/presentation. We've done the local coffee shop, Culvers, Dairy Queen. This is her 4th year in this building, so the specialist teachers are all the same and I'm running out of new ideas. (Same for dance -- it's a small studio and she's had the same 3 teachers for 4 years.) I've tried to stay to places where $5 is a useful amount, so I've avoided things like the movie theater and Target. Though I'm open to arguments that I'm wrong about those places. Is $5 a worthwhile gift card amount for Barnes and Noble?

Any suggestions?

Anybody Here Quit Cable TV?

Like much of this country, I am disenchanted with my cable company. I agreed to subscribe after the digital conversion because husband wanted it and said that he "would die without TV." Since I don't want any funerals around here, we signed up with the local cable company. Last night I decided to let him know that I am not really happy with the situation.

Here are my complaints. Aside from the fact that anything that we could just as easily get from Blockbuster for five days is under pay per view for one or two days with the cable company. That is in addition to the monthly fees that we are paying. That's the first thing. The next thing is that we can't select what we want the way we did from Netflicks while we paid their monthly fee. So we are paying monthly fees like we did to Netflicks to a company that then wants us to pay for movies the way we did when we went to the video store who did not charge us monthly fees.

To make the situation even more absurd, let's talk about the cable channels that are in our so-called package. These are cable channels that often have no scheduled programs on them and sometimes aren't on the air at all. Okay so they got there first and bought up those channels so that no one else could get them. So bully for them; right? Well, that brings me to my next issue. Isn't it perfectly reasonable to assume that the Disney Channel would have Disney movies etc., that the Hallmark Channel would have Hallmark content, and so on and so forth? I didn't sign up for cable fees for hour after hour of network shows that have been syndicated on the networks for years and even decades with multiple channels pulling this shananagan. I could understand a "classic television channel" for fans of old shows if they mixed the shows up and/or gave the fans the opportunity to choose the episode they watch at any given time. That is not even remotely close to what is happening.

I deferred to my husband because I get so tired of always telling him that I can't fit what he wants into the budget and decided that I would squeeze something else out in order to squeeze cable television in. I think he too is regreting that decision because, while our Internet is fine, that cable television is not good value at all. In fact, it is a lousy one.

Has anyone else here quit cable television? I am wanting to approach this subject with my husband in a manner that won't just get him annoyed. Maybe I could fit the Disney World vacation he wants into the budget much faster if we didn't have those cable fees. Scrolling through screen after screen of channels knowing what kind of show I am in the mood for but having no idea where to find it or if it even exists in all that mess is too much for me. Therefore, I usually don't bother to even turn the television on when I am home but my husband is not. Weather permiting, outside I go to walk around, which is much better for me anyway.

Which cable channels do you think are worth the money? Anyone else here decide that it was a rip off?

We had an absolutely gorgeous fall day here in mid-TN; blue skies, temps in the mid-60s. It was so nice, in fact, that I chose to escape the mess inside our house (new flooring and trim going on) and my two sick girls (sniffly colds) and go outside to work in my garden.

I trimmed all the shrubs, cut back the perennials - which was hard to do as some of them were still in bloom - and edged the front beds.

Did the weather affect your plans today?

I'm hoping you can explain what I saw on the highway today. It had me puzzled for a few miles.
I was driving East (though I think of it as south) on I-94 when I was passed by a car carrier truck. You know, the ones that are usually full of cars on the way to dealerships.
This one was full of nice cars, but not new, assorted brands, most were convertibles. I could see license plates on 4 or 5 of them -- all were Manitoba plates, some vanity plates. So these appeared to be owned.
All I could think was "snowbirds sending their cars south"
Is this typical? I've never seen it before.

Well, it's been a while since I posted on here. We finally our settled in to our new job near Las Vegas... It sure is a stressful one!

But.... I found out yesterday that I am pregnant :D! We had all but given up on having a second baby, when wham! Our son and second baby will be just under 6 years apart. I hope that at some point they will have something in common, our son is always lonely. Now he can look forward to being a big brother, yippee:smirk:

A while ago I asked fellow PPers for any recommendations to keep mt new kitties off the dining table. A few had suggested an electronic noise maker device. Well I found a product called Scat which is a motion detector attached to a can of compressed air (or something). When activated, it sprays a LOUD spray of smelly fog at the cat. I set it up last night and my one male cat, Chewie, jumped on the chair to get up on the table. He set of the Scat, freaked out completely and did a sommersault off the chair. He was slinking around the house to rest of the night and jumped about 3 ft in the air when I sneezed.

Overnight, one of them tried to go up again as the Scat was lying face up on the table and they are both slinking around. So far it seems to be working :) but I feel so evil

Mom's retirement age birthday is today!! She's retiring after the end of the month. Of course, for the workaholic I call mom, that means she's taking her pension pay and then continuing to work for 3 days a week!
The kids are fascinated by the fact that the date is 11-10-09. Now, if I can get a baby at the hospital born at 8:07 (on medical records it would be written 0807)!

4 player, cooperative play Wii Games?

Hello all! We've had a Wii for about 2 years and have some games but I am looking forreccomendations for more 4 player cooperative play games instead of 4 player games where you compete against each other. We love the Lego Star Wars, Indianan Jones games and they way players have to work together but since they are only two players someone always ends up "watching" (yeah, that's wicked fun Wii time!! :rofl2: ) Kids are DS 8.5 and DD almost 6(in Feb) and Dh and I would love to play along with them sometimes.

Any suggestions?

I know I shouldn't bring PP'r friends into a "discussion" with DH, but I need someone to back me up here.

Last night we somehow got onto the topic of the Pythagorean Theorum (Don't ask! It started with DD asking about the Wizard of Oz and the scarecrow being wrong and it went downhill from there!)

At first DD insisted that all right triangles had to be of a 3-4-5 ratio. I finally convinced him he was wrong -- otherwise you could never bisect a square.
Now he's insisting that the Pythagorean Theorum (you remember that -- a squared + b squared = c squared where c is the hypotenuse) only applies to 3-4-5 triangles.
I say it applies to all right triangles.

Who's right?

I realize that this is a site for Disney fans, of which I think that I am one. I believe in my own screen name that Disney is not just a luxury. Life can be very painful. Even very primitive countries have professional entertainers because they serve a need, even if it is not our most primary need. I still believe that there is a difference between not a luxury and a necessity, just as there is a difference between not guilty and actually innocent.

Talk of Disney by my husband is starting to stress me out thanks to our differing views about money.

My work is unsteady at a job that I am a little ashamed to be doing. It is telephone survey job, which means that I am invading people's privacy, which I don't like doing. Hey, in today's economy a job is a job; right? The boss wants me there because people will talk to me. She has heard people telling me that they normally don't do these surveys while they are doing them for me because our calls are monitored by supervisors. She has told me that I am very good at soothing irate people and reassuring suspicious ones. For this she is willing to pay me Unemployment to get me back when work resumes. I can handle furious strangers on the telephone, even when I agree that they have a right to be angry at me for what I am doing. I can handle supervisors to whom I am just labor cost, and even got a wonderful reference from a job which I left on bad terms due to a payroll dispute at the end after my paycheck was two weeks late while they claimed that it was lost in the mail. I found out from co-workers how much management wished that I had returned to work there taking pictures. Yet I am completely incapable of handling my husband's relationship with money within my own relationship with him, so incapable that it is leaving me feeling near despair.

He is upset with me that I am reluctant to spend some retroactive Unemployment on booking rooms at Disney World instead of paying our current obligations or keeping it as a little cushion for my shaky work situation. I was really happy that the problem with someone else using the same Social Security number was cleared up because I am now qualified for some Unemployment during the weeks that I don't get full-time hours. I am not happy with the idea of paying for hotel rooms that we may not be able to use later because he wants to reserve hotel rooms while we don't have airfare to Florida.

Do you have anyone in your family who gets angry at you because the family cannot afford vacations and makes you feel like the biggest piece of dirt because of it? How do you handle it? Sometimes I just think about not being here when he gets home and never coming back. I don't know what to do. I am doing my best to spend my payroll checks responsibly while sometimes working for people whom I suspect are having trouble paying payroll. I don't think that that makes either me or my employers no good. I think that it is a sign of the times.

What have you done in your family if you've ever had a member with wanderlust not in the budget?

She's 14 now.

Today was DD's 14th birthday. This is the first year I did not give her a birthday party (at her request) and did not do a big present for her. WDW in two weeks is her present/party. However, the biggest thing I am working through is that I was only able to spend a total of 1 hour with her today. We visited for 15 minutes before she left for school and I left for work this morning. Then after school/work, we had a 45 minute drive for me to take her to my DBFF's house so she could babysit early tomorrow morning. Tomorrow I will pick her up to take her to lunch with my DMom and my DUncle that is visiting from Minnesota.

I did give her a small gift today. She got a Passporter pin to add to her pin collection. She wore it to school and the DBFF's today.

The temptation was too much!!!!

We bought the Toy Story Mania Wii game for our DD as sson as it came out with the intention of giving it to her for Christmas AFTER we'd come home from WDW.

We were strong. We didn't even open the packaging to peek inside!! :nono:

Emphasis on the "WERE" strong!!!!! :foreheadslap:

DD's birthday was on the 5th and we gave in and she received it as a gift!! :happybirthday:

The game is totally AWESOME!!!! :D We haven't stopped playing it!!!! :thewave:

For those of you who've "ridden the ride" the theme of the game is VERY similar. If you've got a Wii, and you enjoyed TSM at WDW (or DL) you've GOT TO GET THIS!!!!!:crazy:

These are pics we had done in a private Photopass session at the YC last week. The photographer was amazing! And yes, those are Mickey's on Dennis's tie and cummerbund.

Here is the infamous cake. I called the GF about 3 weeks out and we discussed the basic cake idea. I sent the topper and Stitch, they asked for a picture of the fabric from my dress, and this was the result. I had no idea they were going to copy the embroidery and beading on my dress so faithfully! Stitch was our little tribute to our dogs, especially Zoe, who passed away last Spring. I got the idea from the old movie trailers for "Lilo & Stitch" - the ones that started out looking like "Beauty & the Beast" or "Aladdin" and ended with Stitch wreaking havoc. The cake completely exceeded my expectations - and it was delicious, too!

Has anyone else gotten it? I was really on the fence and they closed all the clinics here (Calgary, AB) save for one for all of the health care workers and staff ( I work for a surgeon and im in and out of the hospital and seeing patients all the time)...anyway so this morning I decided to "put on my big girl shoes" (as my boss so kindly put it) and went and got my shot. *NOTE: I am PETRIFIED of needles:cry2:*

But now im wondering now if I have done the right thing...I will be traveling a lot in the next few months...moving across Canada and going to Disney in January so I dont want to be sick or make others sick but it just makes you wonder..I mean there hasn't really been a lot of research etc into the long term effects...just wondering what everyone's opinion is on this....

I'm beyond fuming right now!!!!!!! Let me give you some history

I became disabled in July when I fell down concrete steps and had my body land on my foot. So I have been pretty broke since then. I do get disability though it isn't near what I was making. Over the summer, I was letting my mom use my NICE fuji camera at Sesame Place and she didn't use her tiny brain and put it in the bag with our drinks......... It got water logged and took days to dry out and it worked half-a**ed after then. We then went to see my aunts new house down the shore and she left it in the sand........... it was a mess. I cleaned it the best I could but it isn't reliable. Ritz said it would cost too much to fix and just ride it out. She did buy me a new upgraded model...... So she thought she had the right to give the old one to a girl at her school who doesn't have any money so she could take pictures....... UMMMMMMM, ITS MY FRIGGING CAMERA!!! She said it won't leave the school and its only used for year book and dances. Well, she left the usb cord for the old camera out and the puppies chewed it and she never told me. I just went to list a ton of ebay stuff and couldn't find the new usb cord. She said she lost it or took it to school. Doesn't remember. SCREW YOU SWEETIE!!! Get off of my stuff if you are just going to ruin it.

Since my daughter has swine flu, my mom isn't allowed to go to her school the rest of the week so I will have to wait until Monday to get it. I'm so broke and need to list this crap I have! I can't even upload pictures.

To Disneyland of course! Roger and his twin brother were born on their mom's birthday so I have been plotting this day for a while now. My MiL works for me in the daycare so as a thank you/birthday present (and because she hasn't been to DL in 17 years:eek:) I gave her the day off and surprised her with our plan. Roger took today off work and drove her to DL. She is getting the free day on your birthday pass which we are upgrading to a hopper for her. Since we already have annual passes, Roger is getting the gift card for his birthday and using that to take her to a nice lunch at Storytellers at the Grand Cal. I packed their backpack with all the things we usually take to make the day more fun (including cast member thank you cards with a picture of them with their birthday cake from a couple of days ago) and figured out their itinerary for them so they can get the most out of their day!
They just called and they are on Main Street, waiting for the park to open so they can head to Space Mountain first. I'm sure they will have a great day!:D

I went into a baseball bar today to have lunch. Its just amazing to sit there and eat while looking at pictures of Cy Young and Lou Gerrig!!! You have to have a major interest in the game to know who they even are. And there are a lot of players on the walls I didn't even know. I love seeing them and hope to go back to find out who more of them are.

In the back of the bar is a statue of Marilyn Monroe with her skirt being blown upward!!! Now thats a bar you have to love. (That skirt thing was from The 7 Year Itch--wasn't it?)

Good thing she is staying with her daughter!!! But poor SIL just moved (UH - we just moved her YESTERDAY!!!). Toss on top of both of those - Winter Camping trip on this coming Saturday for DS and a work related trip to Nome for me next week - this isn't a good time for DMIL to be coming for a visit!!! AND........to top it all off - I think I'm coming down with something, headache, body aches, tickle in the back of the throat and just generally not feeling right. Think I may cry.

So we created quite the debate last night among the trick-or-treaters who came to our house. People were making comments and taking pictures of our pumpkins. One couple was even in quite the "discussion" when I opened the door as to whether or not we had really carved our Mickey and Minnie pumpkins or bought them.
Now, I did buy craft pumpkins for Roger to carve Mickey and Minnie into (so we could keep them for more than one night after all the work he put into them), but they were plain pumpkins before he started. Roger's college art degree comes in handy once again!:D

I have exactly 19 more working days until I retire (November 30th). I have been at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign since August 1978. Because of some amount of sick time I get to count towards years of service, I will retire with 32 years of service to the U of I. It's been a great career and I wouldn't have changed anything, well, not much! I will miss working with students. I have learned so much from them over the years and can only hope that I was able to help them achieve their goals in whatever way they needed. I will miss my office mates, co-workers, faculty and other staff within the department, college and university as well. So many mixed emotions about "leaving". However, I have lots of things on my "to do" list, some additional opportunities to volunteer at my church, and maybe some part-time work back at the campus.

However, you know those commercials that say "Mr. So and So, now that you have achieved that great thing (won the world series, #1 NCAA basketball, won the superbowl, etc.) what are you going to do?" "I'm Going To Disney World!!!!"

DH and I will be at WDW Dec 6-15 to celebrate his birthday and my retirement! I will have a few days after my last day to get a few last things in place (actually have an 8 am breakfast scheduled for Dec 1st with a former co-worker who retired 18 months ago) for the trip, get my Christmas cards (PPers, friends/family) done and in the mail, shop for, buy and wrap gifts, finish a Christmas gift project, complete two Christmas stockings for my youngest grandkids that didn't get done last year for their first Christmas (I know, BAD GRANDMA), etc., etc., etc.! But, having better than one week to finish all those things after we get home and before the 25th without having to worry about having to go to work every day will seem like a gift.

Anyone else out there just retired, gonna retire before the end of this year, or are "close" to retirement? If so, what are you going to do (that is AFTER you go to WDW if you are able!!!)?

I hope to have some more time to keep in touch via this community and perhaps my facebook pages. I want to spend more time with the grandkids. I also need to get myself and DH healthier (Challenge group - I'll be back again first the year! Fair warning!), and of course do some traveling. DH retired a few years ago but returned to the university a short time later part-time and will probably continue to do that for a few more years, powers that be permitting!

So thanks for reading about my countdown and for those who will be at WDW in December I hope to get a chance to see you all and help you to celebrate being a part of this wonderful place!

I don't know about you, but this year feels like it's hurtling past to me - I can't get over the fact it's November and I still have summer flowers out in the garden. :jawdrop: This is unheard of for this late in the year! Admittedly I will be ripping some out today, but it still feels like September. Probably just as well we're forecast a cold snap this week - maybe then it'll start to feel a bit like winter.

Anyway, does it feel like November to you? I can now start on the Christmas cards etc., as at least I can say "it's Christmas next month" :D

Spider Problem

We have been killing a lot of spiders in the house lately. They are large, brown, fuzzy...... I was worried they were brown lacroose, but always smushed them before I could get a close look. My boys "caught" one, so we were able to get a real good look at it an compare it with pics on the web. I'm now 99% sure it's brown lacrooses! Not only are they poisonous, but unlike most other spiders; they seek out SOFT things to hide and nest in- like shoes, clothing, blankets, and pillows! We have an exterminator that I am calling Monday, but he told me in the past that there wasn't much he could do for spiders and the only real way to get rid of them is just to kill them as we see them. Anyways......... Any ideas how to deter spiders from coming in our house or to get rid of existing ones????

It seems that trick-or-treaters are becoming a dying breed. This is the first year we've been home for Halloween . . . and only becuase DD spiked a high fever thie afternoon . . . so this is the first time we've gotten to see how many kids come by.

We live in a neighborhood where there are enough kids to need 3 elementary schools (with a population of about 400 kids each) within a mile either way from our house. There are a TON of kids living around us. Add to that, it's 75 degrees and perfectly dry outside right now.

We got ZERO trick-or-treaters. I have a huge witch's cauldron full of candy and we got ZERO. :(

DH is into Halloween. I don't mean like most people - I mean crazy into it.
We're setting up for our annual party - it's very informal, and all we do is set out a ton of food and decorate the house and yard.
We all realized we're hungry, DH offered to go fetch food. He's been gone for over an hour. Was there a long line at the Steak and Shake? Was there bad traffic? Was there an accident?
No to all of those - there were THREE Halloween stores and a party store on the way!

I cringe to think of what he's purchased TODAY. Yesterday was light up monster eyes for a 5 foot wreath he's made giant teeth for - trying to replicate the wreath on Nightmare before Christmas.

We had a party at the dojo tonight. There were at least 75 people there, but we think more. We only had the kids sign in, and there were 63 of them!

12 pizzas, 12 gallons of lemonade, 6 dozen cookies, 9 games of dodge ball, 2 movies (Return of the Sith and Nightmare Before Christmas), one "Haunted Hallway" (our haunted house), a costume contest, a round of sparring (remember - it's a karate dojo!), a bloody nose, a homesick kid, and 7 bags of trash!!

It was a blast!!

I spoke with our son Adam who lives in Denver and after the big snow they received this week, it is 45 degrees there today and supposed to be 55 tomorrow!
And our son Nate in southern Florida is still experiencing record heat!

While we're at it, I'm also going to be able to (FINALLY!) get some furniture and paint our living room. Yes, we've had a big, empty living room for five years (our sofa and loveseat are down in the family room as they're too big for upstairs.)

So...here's the question....

We need some color to liven up this space. Should I get colorful fabric on the furniture and leave the walls a neutral color, or go the opposite and paint the walls with color and leave the furniture in neutrals?

New Flooring - DIY???

We are replacing the carpeting/lineoleum in our living/dining room/kitchen with laminate wood flooring! :thewave: I've got some contractors coming out to give us estimates.

DH thinks if the labor portion of the estimate is high, he'd like to do it himself. (He's what I would call an experienced DIYer.)

Have any of you had experience installing your own flooring? Is it worth the money you save or is it better to leave it to the experts?

My second son is a blond haired blue eyed cutie (if I do say so myself) and let me tell you that was a surprise. I have dark hair, very dark brown eyes and olive toned skin. My husband is the same with lighter skin. Our oldest son has my coloring. Although my mother is fair and blond we do not know anyone on my husband's side that is. It would have had to come from both sides to show up in our kiddos and there my little guy is!! He is very fair and the blond is no darker than the day he was born. I joke that when I go out with my best friend people will think he is hers because his coloring is all hers. :eek:

I am just curious what other parents here had a "surprise" with the looks of a baby. Genetics can be so funny sometimes.:D

1:58 am Why am I online? Because I just bolted out of bed when I heard a loud bang outdoors - very scary !!! So I opened up my blind just a little to see what in the world is going on ... and my next-door neighbor is moving out, RIGHT NOW :eek:. That bang was the door to her U-Haul flying open :mad:. Her helpers are making no effort to be quiet at all.
This seems like something from a movie, like maybe she is running away from who-knows-what. Part of me wants to confront her, but perhaps if I don't interrupt her, she'll be outta here that much faster :smirk:.

Our pre-school karate teacher is out of commission - she has been for a while. She's pregnant.
Our substitute pre-school karate teacher is now out of commission - she's pregnant and not feeling well.
Our back-up just found out she's pregnant and not feeling well.

So, we're down to having a couple of 14 year old black belts teach the class for the next month or so, until the original teacher can come back. It's only an hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and they've both helped out and jumped in to teach in emergencies before. (If you want to see some really responsible, mature kids - get you to a GOOD karate dojo!)

Told DH I'm afraid to even step onto the mat in that room, even to clean the windows or for whatever.

We have a cat named Jasmine that we adopted from a rescue place 8 years ago. I think she was an outside cat. She is an indoor cat with us. She meows all the time!! You barely touch her and she meows. :D She is always finding things around the house. She is a mighty hunter. When she finds things she meows really loud and long. Usually she brings us hair ties, head bands, barbie clothes, small stuff. The other night we were watching Transformers 2 and she started yelling. She came into the room dragging one of my DD17 bras!!!!!! We never laughed so hard. :D My DD almost died!!! :eek:

This week, we're supposed to be unseasonably warm again, with temperatures into the mid 60s, which is unheard of here for late October. We've had no severe ground frost to date and I still have a lot of flowers looking good out in the garden from the summer. I'm amazed by our weather this year, it really has been all over the place. :yes:

I got DD's shirt done - looks good as new, except the color turned out darker than original. DH has decided that not only can I fix the shirt I messed up, but I can do the one HE messed up also (didn't know he messed one up!). Only problem is: it's a TWO HOUR process!!

I'm getting ready to strip the color from one of DD's shirts, and re-dye it. I splashed a bit of bleach on it and one of DH's shirts - of course, for both of them it was their "favorite shirt, ever".
So, either I figure this out or I go buy another A&F shirt for DD and a Ralph Lauren for DH.

Cory has "The Nutcracker" ballet rehearsal on Halloween from 4-6:00pm; I know - prime Trick-or-Treat time around here. :mad: :rolleyes: We're a good 20 min. from the studio, so there's no way we'll make it back home in time to trick-or-treat.

Fortunately, my SiL always has a Halloween Driveway Party on Halloween night that we usually go to as soon as we finish trick-or-treating in our neighborhood. It makes more sense to just go straight from ballet to her house.

However - that means no one will be home at our house to pass out candy to our neighborhood ghosts and goblins.

Would you leave a bowl of candy on the porch and hope for the best....or simply turn your porch light off and hope for the best? :confused: :D

Warning: This is a vent because there are only so many times you and your dh can vent to each other. :tongue:

I've decided that credit card companies are vying for the title "Most evil industry" in this day and age. John and I got rid of all our little debt hanging out there on credit cards in preparation for me quitting and frankly we only need ONE credit card. Our bank debit card is super, duper and we only need one. Really just one will do us.

But we had 4 between the two of us and we've been cancelling the other 3 after deciding on the one to keep. It's been like pulling bloody teeth! You call, you cancel, they argue and beg, you say at least 15 times per call, "Thank you for the information, please cancel the card now".

You finally think you have won as they acquiesce to cancelling your card. Then next month you GET A STATEMENT for your 0.00 owed because you cancelled the STUPID card!. AAUUGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!

You call them back and ask if the card is cancelled and they say "Huh? we have no record that you cancelled this card"

I hate credit card companies. I really do. We finally got two to actually cancel and we are in round two on the third.

My niece's car's engine ceased on her due to running out of oil. She said the warning light would only flash on occasionally and she thought she would wait till it stayed on tho check the oil:eek: 20 years old and well, not exactly smart about these things. She learned her lesson the hard way.

Seeing as though she lives in NH and with no sidewalks and having a longer distance to work then I do, I lent her my car. Well a few weeks later my car just stopped on her and would not start. My sister tried to start it and just got one or 2 clicks and that is it.

I had it towed to a dealership and found out that my engine ceased. They said it is due to the timing belt broke, that 3 of the 4 pistons went into the belt. I would need a new engine. Cost would be an estimated $3,500 ugh.

My car is not worth that. I checked the Bluebook and with the car being in good condition, the selling cost for a private sale would be just slightly over $3,500.

They said the warranty would not cover it due to Kia recommends replacing the timing belt at 40,000 miles or 7 years and I have not done either :(

No way am I paying for a new motor and can't afford a new car or even a used car. Luckily I work in walking distance and if I need a car for something, I can always borrow my moms. She does not drive all that much and never at night.

It may be tough at first, but I think I can make it without a car for a while. At least I can put what I would be paying towards insurance towards my bills.

We are going to make shaped sandwiches for them so here is question number 1.

Also we were going to make mummy jars and put Chex snack mix in it So Question number 2

2. Do kids like the Chex mix? I was thinking cheese or origanle.

After over a year of planning and organizing and excitement we finally renewed our vows in WDW. The evening was perfect but there were a few bumps in the trip I didn't plan for, like not getting to see much of the parks when you are sheparding such a large group through.:rolleyes: I thought I rolled with it pretty well and even though I felt some post-Disney let down all in all it was a great time. Now a month later and I am getting more and more depressed. I am still waiting on my professional photos that were suppose to be ready 2-3 weeks after. At 3 weeks I called and was told definitely by 4 weeks. We have now passed the 5th week and no pics. :mad:On top of all that I just filed a police report with Orange county because our Credit Card # was stolen while we were in Disney by someone at Disney! :eek:The card was only out of our site twice. It makes me so sad that not only do I have to file this report but I can't relive my magical night with my photos. I am suppose to be planning my DDs 16th at WDW and I am too disappointed to do much more than think about it.:(

This time near Jefferson City, Missouri. :(

The girl is 9 and left a friend's house last evening to walk home ("through neighbor's yards" the article said) a quarter of a mile and that she has done it enough to be well "accustomed to" the walk. She left the friend's house at 6pm, her family reported her missing at 7pm and she hasn't been seen or heard from all night.

Police say that at this point they don't suspect foul play, and that she is afraid of the woods and most definitely wouldn't be there at night, so I can't help but think the worst, that someone did grab her. :(

:pixie: that they find her safe and healthy and get her home SOON!

School Dilemma: Take the "D"?

I am in the class from Hades at the moment. The instructor's expectations are well above Master's level work and the 10 hours I am supposed to allocate each week. This 6 weeks has involved a birthday vacay, a trip to Ohio, a move, 2 broken toes and an "F" on a team project (which was not appropriate and all the team quit, but me). If I don't do anything else, I'll have a D- in the class. The very best I could do would be a C+ and that's only if she doesn't trash my final paper, although my personal work has been A-s and B-s. :mad: I'm exhausted from moving and still have a lot to do in the next week. I go back to work tomorrow, too. I have a VERY bad attitude. My Dad is having a hissy that I would even consider such a thing (a "C" was failing when I was a kid). I just don't feel like coughing up a 3000 word paper over the weekend on a subject that I don't really care about (organizational design).

For the most part, I love Ikea. I think their stuff is well-priced and pretty darned cool. That is, until I have to schlep all the heavy boxes, then ASSEMBLE the stuff!!! :eek:

So far, I've gotten a bunk bed, a regular bed, a sofa sleeper thingy, a couple of tables and chairs done. I still have SO much more to do and my hands are going to F-A-L-L-O-F-F.

The latest news in Disney Gaming is the upcoming release of a new Wii exclusive adventure game featuring Mickey and :eek: (drumroll please) his lost big brother: none other than Oswald the Lucky Rabbit! :eek: Since Oswald has been the sole proberty of Universal for a miriad of years, this was only made possible through a trade. Disney traded real life human sports caster "Al Michaels" :ouch: for the rights to digital Oswald. I am fascinated and wonder if this is the first time a human has been traded for a cartoon?? I wonder how Al Michaels felt about it?? LOL
The game itself looks awesome, and will make me wish we had a Wii. Warren Spector is the game designer and the write up in Gameinformer is very detailed and sounds like a great plot for a game. The release date has not been released yet, unfortunatlely!

Unfortunately, I've been confronted with this more than once, and I still don't know how to handle it.

Most recently, I was volunteering in DD's classroom (on a project that had nothing to do with the lesson at hand -- I was in the back of the room trying to be unobtrusive). The class was discussing a book about Amelia Earhardt and Eleanor Roosevelt, and the concept of a "first lady." One of the kids thought it meant Mrs. Roosevelt was "the first lady to live in the White House." In the process of correcting that, the teacher said that "the first president's wife to live in the White House was Martha Washington."

Umm... no. The White House wasn't done when Washington was President. John and Abigail Adams would have been the first couple to live there. (We won't go into the issues of when it got the name "White House" or when the term "First Lady" was first used -- even I'll admit that's a bit much!) DD is in 4th grade, and we're history buffs. DD knew that Washington never lived there.

I didn't know what to do! What would youi do? Correct the teacher on the side? Let it go -- but tell your own kid the truth at home? In this case it was side information, but what if the info is likely to show up on a test? Does it matter?

Last year, DD was reading a book about Washington DC that was full of misinformation. It said the Washington Monument was finished in the 1830's (construction actually stopped during the Civil War), referred to President "James McKinley" (DD looked puzzled and said "I thought his name was William") and had a third error I can't remember now. I suggested to the teacher that they might want to find a new book, but I was told since it was used for reading not Social Studies it didn't matter!

We're under 3 days! Where did the time go??

Dress is finished (yay!!), purse is finished (unlined, but it'll hold a cell phone and credit card so who cares), found a decent-looking crinoline for under the skirt, hat is finished (the millinery business has nothing to fear from me - outside looks great, inside looks like Frankenstein), gloves aren't, but they weren't part of the original plan anyway and I can sew them in the car on the way down if I really want them.

Cake topper arrived at 1900 Park Fare for our cake.

Finally connected w/ priest and church is a go.

Got all the work together for my students for next week though still have to finish notes for my "sub."

I pick up my flowers on Friday - part-time florist friend of mine is doing bouquet and flowers for my folks and DH2B as a weddiing gift.

We have the rings.

Dogs' shots are updated and kennel is reserved.

Cruise docs, passports, ADR, list, resv #'s, tickets, and PP are all in one pile.

All the miscellaneous stuff (meds, pirate stuff, Halloween stuff, cameras, etc.) is in another pile.

Got my hair cut but still have to dye, uh, I mean "do" it.

Haven't started packing yet, but my principal gave me tomorrow afternoon off to get it done, and I pretty much know which clothes/stuff I'm taking.

Have I forgotten anything?
