I have a question... We have booked our 2nd cruise on the Magic/Western Carribean for Feb 2011. We were thinking of booking our next cruise while on board the Magic(we were thinking of the Dream). If anyone has done that and has benefited from that please let me know. Is it really a good savings to do that? Thank you! :)

This is our first Disney Cruise and we couldn't be more excited. We're HUGE WDW fans, but haven't done the cruise thing yet.
I know my kids (DD, 9 and DS, 12) will be busy doing their thing and having a great time. But my DH would be content to stay in the room the whole trip and sleep or watch TV.
So my question is this... will I be the only "solo" in the adult activities? Will it be too awkward for me? I'm the one that wants to go out and have fun. I'm interested in learning about the ship, the activities, cooking demos.
Thanks!

I know the kids clubs are arranged by age but what is the likelihood that I could get 3 of the kids (boys 7, 7 & 8) in the same kids club? 2 of them are cousins and they are all best friends. The 2 7 year olds are half a year younger than the 8 year old. Do you think they could move the 8 year old down?

Is parking at Port Canaveral always available?

We are considering renting a car for our trip to the World and our Disney cruise in May.

We have no experience with parking at Port Canaveral. Is parking always available? I called DCL and was told $15 per day - is there ever a case where the lot is full and you have to park somewhere else - if there even is anywhere else? Being from NYC, I always have concerns about parking availability, and would not want any problems, especially since we are traveling with 3 kids, 1 of whom is a toddler

Thanks!

I have been using the dining plan since it became available and we love it. Paying in advance for everything we can makes things alot easier.
For some reason this just doesn't make any sense to me. Oh well, at least I get to go to Disney again. :smirk: E

We had planned to spend New Year's Eve in Orlando doing Universal stuff, but then I got an impulsive whim to do a Disney cruise. So, two days later, hubby and I are booked on the Wonder with a non-refundable deposit!!!

I feel kind of crazed because I normally plan way ahead and there is no time to do so! We have been to Nassau numerous times and plan to just hang out at Senor Frogs this time around. We've already booked Palo for the 11:30 champagne brunch (perfect, we can eat it for lunch) and for 6:00 on our last night (yuck, but that was all they had left).

A few questions, if you don't mind:

1. I think I want to try to change Palo dinner. I don't want to miss Artist's Point or Triton's. I'm confused about the dining rotation. Is the "repeat" dining experience the last night (I.E. PLAP) or the third night? (I.E. LPPA) I've read material saying either way.

2. This trip is a budget-buster for us, so we are saving on expenses. What is FREE or CHEAP and fun to do at Castaway Cay?

3. Anything else we need to book/plan ahead for?

4. We want to go to the Space Center the day we disembark. What time can we reasonably expect to be off and at our car?

Any other advice would also be appreciated. We are five-time Carnival, two-time Princess, and one-time Royal Caribbean veterans so we are familiar with the basic cruise stuff.

Thanks!

St. Thomas/Coral World on your own?

We're very interested in Coral World - so much so that we'd rather not be limited by DCL excursion timelines. (We've annual passholders at our state aquariums, and spend at least 3-4 hours at them when we visit. And DD really wants to see some coral!)

Has anyone done Coral World on their own? Where would we catch a cab? About how much would it be for a party of 4? Is it simple getting a cab back to the port? What else do I need to consider?

TIA!

My sister, my two girls (8 & 3) and I will be going on our second western cruise on Feb 20, 2010. I am looking for some tips on doing some excusrions ourselves. Last time, we did it through Disney and felt we just paid too much. So I am willing to do some legwork to save some money.

Key West -- I am thinking about renting one of those little cars with GPS for the day. Has anybody done this? How much? Do I need to think about a car seat for my 3 year old? Where should we go?

Cozumel -- We swam with the dolphins last year and it was great. Now I am just thinking about some quiet time at the beach. Which would be a good one with kids? Light surf etc.

Grand Cayman -- I went there many years ago and would like to go to Rum Point again. No need to swim with the stingrays. Any ideas about how to get there? I do know that it is a bit of a drive, but how much?

Thanks for any info. We are looking forward to cruising again, but we would like to try something different as well this time.

DH and I were going to forgo Palo for this cruise because it is our first and he didn't want to miss any of our dinner rotations or have to rush back to the boat for an early seating. However I was able to snag a reservation for our first night (Port Canaveral) at 6pm. This way we can enjoy Palo and then go to our late seating if we choose to for a light 2nd dinner/dessert or order some room service.

Is this a good idea or should I nix the Palo idea all together?

I know I saw the answer to this before, but I can't remember what was said!
My husband wants to know if they provide life jackets for the kids on Castaway Cay. Nicholas (DS6) is very "brave" when it comes to the water, but he is used to pools. He would probably be safer with some kind of swim aid, since he is just learning to swim. He had tubes in his ears until last summer, so he never really did much in the water before then, besides splashing around in the shallow end. Will they have something for him, or would I be better off packing his life jacket?

My husband wants to know if they provide life jackets for the kids on Castaway Cay. Nicholas (DS6) is very "brave" when it comes to the water, but he is used to pools. He would probably be safer with some kind of swim aid, since he is just learning to swim. He had tubes in his ears until last summer, so he never really did much in the water before then, besides splashing around in the shallow end. Will they have something for him, or would I be better off packing his life jacket?

I had heard that people were getting telephone calls from their TA's telling them that DCL was cancelling their Summer 2011 med cruises and not taking any more reservations for those dates. I think this effected those cruises from July 30, 2011 forward, yet the September 2011 TA seems to still be on.

Is anyone here affected by this? What if any news have you heard? Some are speculating that the Alaska and Dream cruises lowered interest in the Summer 2011 cruises for the Med. Others are saying that DCL may be bringing the Magic back early to do 7 day Eastern and Western sailings. However, this seems strange since the September TA has not been cancelled.

Any thoughts?

I was thinking about getting a Town Car (the Pass Porter Med Ports as Town Car server listed that looks good).

What are your thoughts taxi or town car in Barcelona?

Has anyone been on a cruise during the Super Bowl? Do they have a big party and put it on the big screen? If so, does anyone have any pictures of the screen with the game on it? We are surprising our kids with a 2011 Cruise to the Western Carribean during Super Bowl and we are looking for pictures to make an invitation to a Super Bowl Party. We want to make a homemade invitation and we are looking for pictures to make it. We plan on telling them during our own SuperBowl party 2010. If anyone has anything we would appreciate you posting it for us. Thanks a lot! :)

My cruise is coming up very fast..Nov 14, so I am thinking maybe there is some information on this somewhere. I know that A Christmas Carol is coming out, and the Princess and the Frog comes out in December, but I was wondering if there is any possibilities they will premier the film early (since they say they do this sometimes).

We are getting so excited!

This is a weird question I know, but my sister and I just took a Disney cruise this summer. It was her first cruise and she liked it so much she would like to go back with her husband. The only problem is that her husband is pretty tall and she said that he would be too tall for the showers. I suggested that he use the showers in the locker room, as I have read that some people just prefer those showers. She thinks that other tall people must also have this problem and that maybe there is another solution. I knew if there was someone on this board would have the answer, so help me out. What do tall people do on a cruise? Are the showers in higher categories bigger than in the lower cat staterooms or do they just use the locker rooms? My sister will appreciate any help you can give her!!! :D

We haven't been on DCL in 10 years, but will be going in May 2010. I am VERY tempted to see if we can swing a cruise in 2011 on Dream

What are the typical bounceback offers, if they still do them, and do you think they would do these for Dream (I'm thinking maybe not, since it's a new ship?).

If they aren't likely to do a bounceback offer valid for Dream, I might consider trying to book on 11/9.

Thanks! :)

With the extra people on board and the same number of restaurants in the rotation, I'm wondering if the extra size of the dining locations will make the service slower and make the rooms seem like banquet halls. Also, unless Palo will have a lot larger capacity it'll make the drama of snagging reservations even worse. Any thoughts?

My husband and I are going on our first cruise this February for our anniversary. We are doing the western bound 7 night magic cruise on the 20. Our anniversary is the 22 and is a sea day. I was thinking about doing Palo for dinner this day. What will be a good dining rotation schedule so we will not miss anything in the main dining hall? I was also thinking maybe we can go to Palo early and still go to our dinner dining hall( we have the second seating) to see the show. Or in DH case he can get him something to eat if he do not like Palo food. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

This has been bugging me for a while so I guess I should just ask here where I won't feel stupid for asking...
When I originally booked our package we were also doing the flight through Disney too, but then I had it removed because we ended up booking the flight on our own. When I called them to remove it (this was months ago), they did but then added a charge for the DME, I think $69/person (4 of us), which covers us from the airport to the resort to the port back to the resort and then to the airport again. Now I thought I read somewhere that DME is free for resort guests, and we are staying at the POR before our cruise and have a post night at the CBR after our cruise, so is it accurate to still be charged for the DME?

Thanks!!!

We are in desparate need of finding a van service that will take us from the Hampton Inn at Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral this Saturday Nov. 7th. FL Tours who we used before is booked. Quicksilver will not pick us up til 10:30 AM and that is too late for us. We want to get to the port by 9:45 as we like to get ther early before the crowds get in and get checked in and relax in the terminal.

We need a service that will get us at 8:45 - 9:00 and stop at the Publix near Port Canaveral so we can get beer, wine and bottled water.

HELP PLEASE !

Well, we are going again on a Disney cruise. Family of 4 adults looking to join another Disney group in St. Petersbug (private tour agency not DCL) We love to meet new people. We are VERY flexible in what we see and do in Russia. Just so excited and can't believe we are really able to go next year.
If you're group could handle 4 more, please let me know.

Cat 4 GTY vs. Cat 5 7576?

When we booked our January cruise in mid-September, we looked for a Category 4 room to give us a little extra space (our kids are 6 and 11). There were no category 4s available, so we booked a Category 5 room, 7576 (which , by coincidence, is next to the room we stayed at on our first cruise in 2002). That location seemed convenient to the elevators, midway between the restaurants/kids club decks and the pool decks, and generally fine. We've stayed in Category 5 rooms before when the kids were smaller and been fine. On our last cruise my mother-in-law had the connecting room next door, so one of the kids stayed with her which alleviated crowding in our room.

I noticed this morning that disneycruise.com was now showing availability for Category 4 on our cruise, so I called our travel agent. For an extra $180, she was able to upgrade us to a Category 4 guarantee. Now I'm just a little bit nervous about not knowing the location. Are there any "bad" Cat 4 rooms, or should we be fine anywhere? None of us is particularly prone to seasickness.

Thanks!

We booked our cruise several months ago, but I'm just now looking more closely at the confirmation. Does "Main" under dining indicate that you have the early seating - or is this something else? I know we requested, and were give, early seating, but not sure if this is where it is listed.

:thanks:

Okay, so we all know that we can book the Dream starting on the 9th (those of low-lifes that are only Castaway Silver at this point- ;)). I, however, must have been stuck under some kind of rock and not reading my travel-agent emails thoroughly enough because I just found this out!!!

I'm busy planning our May 2010 trip--our first trip as DVC members. we just bought air last week and tomorrow I make our ADR's...and now I am thinking "should we book a trip on the Dream?"

Am I crazy to be thinking about booking our 2011 trip next week when I haven't even gotten my head totally around the 2010 trip!?!?

If we do the Dream (which we always said we wanted to do in the inaugural year), we're hoping for the May 29th 5-day-double-dip. What do you think? Bite the bullet and the deposit $$ and book it?! Or wait awhile till we get more of the $ for the 2010 trip set aside?!

As I start putting together our trip, the one thing hanging me up is the logistics of transferring from MCO to Port Canaveral, to Pop Century, then to MCO. Those of you that have done this....what do you suggest? I've read all kinds of different ideas, and I'm getting very confused!!! I don't want to spend a ton of money, but then I don't want the hassles of rental counters, shuttles from place to place, etc! We come a long way and we're usually pretty brain-dead when we get to Orlando! :D

We will probably fly in semi-late the night before our cruise. I'm thinking of getting a room at the Hyatt to simplify things. Should we just take Disney transpo? I think it was going to cost about $260 for roundtrip MCO transfers for three people? I don't mind driving, but paying for parking, or returning a car at Port Canaveral, then doing it all over again at the end of the cruise seems like a pain. It wouldn't even save me money from the prices that I've been seeing for rentals. I don't mind using Disney transpos once we're at WDW, and we could use DME on the way home.

Do you have to transfer at the airport? Can you use Disney transpo from the port to Pop Century? I'm thinking that they only go to certain resorts. I know that I could just call and ask a CM, but I know that you guys usually know more than they do! he he

Well, I did what I NEVER thought that I would do. I gave up my verandah. Sigh.

Originally we had a four-day Bahamian cruise reserved. We've never cruised before (it will be me and my DDs 15 & 7) and we're super excited!! I had a category 6 reserved and planned on adding a few days afterwards at WDW. Honestly, I wasn't really excited about Nassau, but I figured the ship would make up for that!

After talking to a few people at work who have done cruises, Disney and otherwise, they heartily recommended a longer cruise. A few cranky people on another board advised me to just give up the verandah. I wouldn't have listened to them, since they were insulting my choice, but my coworkers were much nicer.......(yeah, I can be stubborn.)

So.....we changed our cruise from a 4-day to a 7-day Western Caribbean! I chose a category 9 and requested a large porthole room, which I think I got. Stateroom 2578?I'm much more excited about the ports-of-call on this itinerary! We actually saved $600 from the original plan of a 4 day cruise and 3 nights at WL with tickets. I'm thinking that I still may add on a couple days at WDW, but we'll probably go with Pop since we'll be commando touring. The only painful part is the price of the park tickets since it's such a short trip. Who knows, maybe when the time comes I'll invest in some non-expiring ones....must crunch the numbers!

What do you think? Would you do this? I really thought that I had to have a verandah, but figured that it wouldn't hurt to try it this way just once. I know the advantages....enjoying the verandah early in the am and late at night. Peace and quiet (I'm assuming). Please reassure me that these porthole rooms are still cool!

Oh well......I vow to be happy with my choice while still sending prayers to the upgrade fairies!!! :pixie:

I booked myself first thing this morning for the inaugural sailing of the Disney Dream! I am so excited! I was at the Dream Event last week in NYC. The ship looked so amazing I couldn’t wait to go. I really want to try the Aquaduck. I booked an inside stateroom for myself. I got to see one of the new virtual port holes for the inside staterooms at the Dream event so now I will have one in my room. It looked pretty cool!

We have booked the Chakaanab and Discover Mexico Excursion and I am anxious to hear reviews. We have a 9 and nearly 12 year old. We'd like to give them a taste of Mexico with both fun and some education!

We originally booked the Jeep Exploration.

Any advice, reviews, ideas?

Hi Everyone .

It's been a long time since I've been here!! I am back with cruise questions. I have never done a Disney cruise before , but now finally have a few families wanting to try to plan for Feb 2011. Seems sooooo far away when I say it ...hahaha. I've been doing all my research on it all ,and am wondering what is the difference between a Navigators verandah and just Verandah ??? The only thing I ever see is " a white wall ".

While I'm on stateroom questions , is decks 1 and 2 not a good idea? I've always been told to try and stay as close to the middle (1/2 way up ) so as to not feel the ships movement as much.

Any help would be greatly appreciated ....and I'm sure I'll be back with more questions :)

Thanks !!!!

When I booked our reservation I selected the main dining setting. I was looking at our reservation online last night and it seems we may have been bumped to the late seating. I plan to call today to ask about but I'm a little on the fence about what I really want.

On one hand, I'm traveling with a 3 year old so I think early would be better.

On the other hand, we are from WI (central time) so even if we ate at 8pm it would really seem more like 7 pm plus two of the days in port the departure time is after the first seating starts.

And since you are reading this.... what night (on a 7 ngt cruise) should I book Palo?

Help me... what do I want.

So I am considering doing a cruise to wrap up or lead to our first trip to WDW.

I planned $100 a day for WDW and that I was told was alot.

So how much should I take on the cruise? The ship is Disney wonder and the destination was the Bahamas the dates are either the 4 night 1/102010-1/14/2010 or 3 night 1/21/1010-1/24/2010.

We have never been on a cruise either.

I'm trying to convince my DH to splurge. We went on one measly vacation this year :(

Just back from the Dream Announcement!

I just returned home from the Dream Announcement. I promise to post pictures shortly! Disney always puts on such amazing events. I don't think I have anything new to tell you since they did the live webcast at the same time but if anyone has any questions- please let me know and I would be happy to try to answer them.

One thing I did learn that surprised me-- all the beds will be queen beds. (Not including the couch and pull down). They will not be able to be split into 2. They said less than 1% of people request them seperated.

The Virtual porthole is VERY cool. They had a sample one and we were able to see it. Peach (the starfish from Nemo) and Scuttle will make appearances.

Also- the ship will have "enchanted art" through out. From far away the pictures will look stationary but as you get closer they will move. They had a sample of this as well. Very neat.

I am uploading pictures now and should have them up shortly!

What is on the Disney Dream? An amazing new AquaDuck - the world's first ever shipboard water coaster! Not to mention virtual portholes in all inside cabins, amazing new things in the Oceaneers Club and Lab, a new teen only area including sun deck and so much more.

The ship is absolutely stunning judging from the "photos" and "video" they have posted online. I can't wait!!!

Art Auction experience

I wish I could write a positive review, but a sense of honesty dictates otherwise.

There were some happy people last spring when Disney dumped Park West for the art auctions, given the high rate of bad experiences with Park West. But before my August cruise nobody posted a review of West End, and I see nobody has since.

So here's my experience. And it is not pretty. I don't know if it is typical, but it is enough to convince me that I will never consider doing business with them again.
I am a fan of Pino, and I previously owned two of his pieces. I saw a third I wanted onboard, and I thought the starting price was pretty good, so I looked up that piece online during the stop in Grand Cayman. The starting price at the auction was $675, and the best price I have found before or since was $650 - without frame - so I think I got a good deal at $675. I was told that I would receive the framed artwork before the end of September, and I debarked Aug 29th looking forward to receiving it.

In late September I emailed West End Gallery, using the email address on the receipt, to ask how soon I would receive the piece. I never received a response. This is, obviously, unacceptable.

On September 29 I called their number and spoke to a woman who didn't give her name. She took my invoice number, confirmed my phone number, and promised to call back that day after checking with the shipping department. She never did. This is, obviously, unacceptable.

Wednesday, September 30 my phone bill shows an 11 minute call - me calling them. This time a guy answered, took the same information, and again promised to call after checking with the shipping department. I asked to hold instead, and a few minutes later a familiar female voice came on the phone. This time she gave a name, Jay, and an extension number. She told me that they weren't supposed to have sold that piece of art, as there were no more in the warehouse. But she said that she would have it removed from the Magic that weekend, if it was still in proper condition it would be reframed and shipped to me. She apologized orally, and said to make it up to me she would have the "free" Disney print framed. I appreciated it, but would have preferred overnight shipping. But I didn't ask - all my purchases from REPUTABLE galleries have been shipped overnight.

The whole situation so far is totally unacceptable, but I decided to wait and see if they gave me a nice frame for that Disney print or if they included a letter of apology. Instead nothing happened. On October 7 I tried calling for a status update, but called too late - being on the west coast I needed to call before 2 PM.

Thursday, October 8 I was called by Jay who again apologized, told me the piece had been retrieved from the ship and showed no wear or damage, it had been mounted in a new frame, and she would call me the next day with a tracking number.

When nobody called on Friday the 9th, I called them at 1:35 Pacific / 4:35 Eastern. I was given a tracking number, and UPS showed the package had been shipped ground the previous Wednesday.

Here's more for the unacceptable list - on Thursday she says it will ship tomorrow, when it had already shipped? Communication between departments or offices at West End Gallery must be genuinely pathetic!

Believe it or not, it gets worse!

Friday, October 16, I finally receive my artwork. It is in good condition, which I didn't expect. But there is no legitimate certificate of authenticity! Remember I said I had previously purchased art from Pino? Every piece came with a certificate of authenticity from Classic Publications, Inc - a business I believe is owned by Pino's family. This piece came with a certificate from West End Gallery - something nobody educated about art would accept!
Fortunately it was early enough in the day, so I called them back at 1:34 PM Pacific time to ask for a return authorization. The second person I spoke with claimed to have all the original certificates and said she would send it immediately. She promised it would be in that day's mail.

After hanging up, and after 2:00 Pacific time, I realized I hadn't found the other frame. I then found an ENVELOPE with an UNFRAMED piece of Disney artwork! Even worse, IT WASN'T THE PIECE LISTED ON MY RECEIPT! Now even more angry, and trusting West End Gallery even less, I put together two envelopes - one from my Aunt and Uncle in Ft. Lauderdale to me, and one to them. I wrote a quick note asking them to send back the return envelope the same day they receive that letter, and sent it Friday.

Thursday the 15th I received my return envelope from my relatives, postmarked Monday the 12th. Friday the 16th I received the certificate from West End Gallery, with a meter stamp dated Friday the 9th. Considering how slowly it came, I suspect on Tuesday the 13rd they back-dated their meter - a practice the Post Office objects to, but something I was occasionally asked to do 20 years ago when I worked in a mail room.

So, to sum up:
They sold me something they weren't supposed to sell.
If I hadn't contacted them after I expected to receive the artwork, I would probably still be waiting.
They did not call back when they promised to.
They did not send the correct second print.
They promised to frame the second print, but did not do so.
They initially did not send a legitimate certificate of authenticity.
Sending the real certificate took longer than sending one letter to Ft. Lauderdale and getting a response.

After my experience I have absolutely no confidence in West End Gallery, I will never consider another purchase through them, and without hesitation I would advise other people to not purchase from West End Gallery no matter how tempting a piece or a price. Disney was receptive to criticisms against Park West, and I hoped to have a good experience, but instead I am disappointed to have had such a poor experience with West End Gallery. But I know Disney doesn't control West End Gallery, and the rest of my cruise was wonderful, so I am looking forward to three more cruises with Disney.

At this point I would like nothing more than to return the artwork to West End, get my money back, and spend more money to purchase the artwork elsewhere even though I would spend more. But after the experience of getting the artwork I would have legitimate concerns about getting the refund in a reasonable amount of time - if ever.

Hello,

I have a friend going on DCL Nov 2009. She is willing to book us while she is onboard for a cruise we want to take Jan. 2011 so that we can get the discount (?10%) + $200 stateroom credit for 7-day cruise for booking onboard.

The Mousesavers.com website indicates that you can do this:
"You can book as many staterooms for future cruises as you have people in your party. For instance, if you have a family of 5 on the cruise, you can book up to 5 staterooms for future cruises! This is great if you'd like to organize a family reunion cruise, or get a great deal for family and friends."

However, the catch is that she would not be travelling with us. Is it possible to do this or does her name need to be listed as a passenger? If she lists herself as passenger - can we change the name on a reservation later (e.g. change it to my name)?

Also, does anyone know what the current onboard booking discount is? She told me that her last cruise they were offering a 25% discount.

Thank you in advance for all your help. I appreciate the words of wisdom from experienced cruisers.

Wonder Cat 9 outside cabin layout - elec outlets

I'm excited to find out that we were upgraded from a cat 12 inside to a cat 9 outside cabin for the 12/6 sailing!

The last cruise we had a cat 11 inside and remembered that Jennifer recommended taking our own clock/power strip/extension cord because the cabin clocks are decorative and can't be seen in the middle of the night. Worked perfectly!

Now, looking at the layouts for the cat 9 cabins, I can't see where electric outlets might be placed.

Anyone stay in a cat 9 cabin and can tell me where the outlets are placed?

Thanks!

We are thinking of taking the Walking and Kayaking Nature Adventure on Castaway Cay in Feb 2010. Just my husband and myself are going. Does anyone have experiences to share? We also would like to bike. Not sure if we can do both in one day.

Are shore excursion age restrictions firm?

We are traveling with an 11, 13 and 3 year old. Would like to book excursions that are for 5 years old and up. Are the age restrictions suggestions or firm? We are used to juggling the toddler on outings. My husband and I take turns-- kind of like the baby swap on rides at Disney.

For example, in Cozumel if we booked the Fury Catamaran Sail, Snorkel and Beach Party could my husband and I take turns snorkeling while the other played in the water with the 3 year old (with a life vest on, of course)?
Thanks!

who else can I ask but the PP folk?

Okay, I know we can take our own snacks on board, as long as they're unopened, but I'm wondering if we can take them off at the end of the cruise if they've been opened? I'm thinking about these yummy granola bites from Sam's that are a great snack, but I know we won't finish the whole bag in 4 days. Oh, and I know not to try to smuggle bananas thru customs!
