Our appt. is on Monday at the administration building. I know I should be happy that my little boy is big enough for Kindergarten, but this whole process is so stressful. He was behind on his immunizations, but he's caught up after a week of trying to track down his records (his former pediatrician lost his ENTIRE file ) and get him caught up. His birth certificate had a TYPO on it. So I sent away for a duplicate to have the spare so I could send one back with the corrections just in case it didn't get here in time. Good choice I made because the spare still isn't here and the state of PA shut down until the contract negotiations could be finished. When we finally realized the duplicate would never get here in time much less have time to mail it back with corrections, we opted to register him despite the problem with his birth cert. and promise to try to get it corrected by the end of the year. (I did include a copy of my birth cert. with my maiden name on it just to clarify the problem and prove I'm who I say I am. )
Complicating matters is registering for a cyber charter school by mail. He has to be registered in our home district to reroute the funding to the charter school. A friend and teacher in the local district warned us not to mention that we were only registering him so the funding could be rerouted because the school's admins would drag their feet until we had no choice but to send him to public school so he wouldn't miss any days. So now I have to go into this meeting trying not to mention that it doesn't matter that we'll miss orientation while we're on vacation and we don't need to choose a bus stop or meet his teacher. But thank goodness our friend warned us to watch our step and not tell them any more than necessary.
So, 1 physical, 1 dental exam, 2 filled surface cavities, 3 shots, one incorrect birth certificate, and one 30 page enrollment packet down. 2 administrative meetings to go and 1 home cyber school-provided PC to set up.
Does DJ know he isnt really going to go to the actual school?
Yes. We don't talk about it a lot, though, because his grandparents get upset when he talks about it. (Short-sighted, visionless, moldy elders. ) Though, he has no idea what being in school means. He only knows that most kids get on a bus and go to the school building. He's never been in preschool or anything, so he's not sad about missing out. He just doesn't know what they do there. He is sad about not going on the bus. One of my mom's old friends is a bus driver in our district. She's trying to work it out so we can take a couple of rides with her this year.
We're enrolling in a swimming lesson and phys ed program for homeschooled kids at our local YMCA, so he'll get lots of playtime with other kids. Thank goodness for the YMCA! I asked about a craft or art program, but they don't currently have one. They did ask if I would be willing to volunteer to help if they had enough interest in such a program, though. I would LVE that!
Yikes! That's a lot of hoops they put you through. When I started DDs in an e-school, all I had to do was fill out the cyber school forms with our district # and that was it. There was NO dealing with the local school at all. Setting up the computer...that was the hard part! (not really...)
that you get through it all OK...sounds like you have an exciting year ahead of you! If you don't mind my asking, which program did you put him in? We loved K12, but the e-school thing just didn't work for my schedule.
It's just a PA public cyber charter school. It's not a specific program. Forgive me, but I'd rather not post his school info online. I'd be happy to PM you the details if you like, Dawn. The nice thing about it is that DJ can log on anytime during the day Monday through Friday to work on his lessons and be counted present. If he doesn't log on at all from midnight to midnight during a regular school day, it's considered an absence. AND he can log on from any computer, so we can take the laptop along on vacations during the school year and he can log on anywhere as long as we can find WiFi access for him. Or, he can work up to 3 weeks ahead of his class and take some time off for vacations or holidays. He just has to log in for a few minutes on those days so it doesn't count as an absence.
The best part is NO SNOW DAYS! They post school holidays and the last day of the school year on the school calendar and it remains that way - no matter how many blizzards we get. School is only interrupted when our ISP goes out during huge storms. And the school even reimburses us for internet service from the funding that's allocated by the state for DJ's education. I {HEART} charter schools.
I absolutely understand not wanting to share details! It's nice that the attendance works that way. We had to log hours (920/yr) with a minimum of 25/week. If we missed logging hours/progress, we got emails and phone calls. It wasn't pretty if we couldn't get online, say, when THEIR system was down or when we were stuck in ice storms...
I definitely will miss the ISP reimbursement and the free computer/curriculum. I just bought the girls' school for next year and it was $500.
Aye yaye, what a workout! DH is leaning towards Jimmy being homeschooled, and so am I except I'm the one who will do all the research to decide, so thanks for the heads-up on what will be expected for a charter school. Good thing we have a while to catch-up.

I was curious just because hes so verbal he might spill the beans--
DJ is registered at our local school district. The charter school paperwork goes out in the mail tomorrow. (We had to finish up a few details before mailing.)
No trouble at the school this morning at all. I was given to understand DJ would have to take a reading readiness test and some other things, but despite making me bring him along, they barely even noticed him. Remind me again why I had to make an appointment just to stand at the counter in the admin. office and fill out paperwork? Shocked 'em speechless when they realized I showed up with originals and copies of all of the correct paperwork. I attended elementary school in the same district and I'm not being given credit for being able to READ the instructions on their website?
I spoke to the children of some friends of my aunt this weekend, too. They were asking me about DJ's charter school and their kids overheard. The kids were green with envy and falling over themselves to tell me how bad the school district really was. At first, I thought it was typical "school sucks" kind of teenage stuff, but they had some very real complaints. I suspect public school may lose a few more students as their mom sounded very interested in taking a bigger role in their education after the horrid school year they were put through last year. It's a formerly small district in the middle of an area that is booming with new construction developments springing up everywhere. Classes are seriously overcrowded. These poor girls were getting grades that didn't make sense only to find out that their teachers - independently of each other - were mixing their grades up with other students. Forcing students to complain about teacher performance when their grades are reported in error is horrible.
