Poor thing - she's been swimming all summer in our neighbor's pool. They actually opened it in March when we had a warm spell and never closed it again. It's not really as well maintained (clean) as I'd like - but oh well.
This weekend, she went to a friend's pool. THEY have a pool boy, and the pool is immaculate.
Within 24 hours she was complaining of an earache, and today the Dr. diagnosed Swimmer's Ear.
No swimming for a week. AND - we're going boating on Thurs. with friends. Swimming, skiing, and tubing. She was really looking forward to the skiing. We think we can pull off the tubing with earplugs.
Location: Cypress....Deep in Southern Illinois, close enough to see the Kentucky blue grass

Poor thing is that (swimmers ear) anything like when I dive and can't get water out of my ears? I know thats painful. Other divers told me to make a mixture of cider vinegar and alcohol to put in there. It really helped me.
DD always seems to get either Swimmer's ear or an ear infection at the worst time. When she was 7 she had Swimmer's ear the day before we left for Hawaii. No swimming for a week.
I had Swimmer's Ear when I was a pre-teen and it REALLY hurts! It's mainly from not drying out your ears in between swimming (per my Dr.) but you can also get it other ways. I went swimming everyday that one summer and then I really paid for it. Now this is just me, but to this day I have problems with that one ear and I make sure I don't get water in it.
I wouldn't take the chance with the ear plugs and the lake. If something happened and water got in....she would be in alot of pain and wouldn't enjoy the rest of the day.
Yes, swimmer's ear is exactly what Lori asked - from the water that you can't get out of your ear. Then it sits there and irritates the outer ear (the outside part of the eardrum), and gets infected. She's on anti-biotics, so we're hoping that's okay. I'm going to call the Dr. and ask about the lake in the AM. DH took her, so no knowing what was talked about.
I've had swimmer's ear, and boy does it hurt. I got it while at the beach, and I used those wax earplugs that you mold to your ear so I could still play in the ocean (just no ducking my head under water).
for Lauren! Maybe, though, there is a reason for this - maybe she will discover a new land-based activity that she really enjoys...??? Here's to hoping!
