| When you were a kid, what presents did you get your parents? Nimros post about presents for parents made me think. Do you remember any of the gifts that you did give to your parents? When I was a kid, I used to buy my mom a perfume that was a solid - Tabu. She kept it in the fridge. The best gift I ever bougth was when I was about 12, I went to a department store and got her a nut dish - it was 2 pieces - one was a glass globe with a hole in it (big enough to put your hand in to pull out nuts). The second piece was a silver piece that the orb sat on. She loved it, and used it everytime she had people over.

| My Mom loved Emaraude perfume and I remember getting her gift sets. I also got her these really big flower pins that they sold in a local accessory store. She loved them and eventually had one in every color. I still have them in my jewelry box...they mean alot to me! And do you remember the glass swan sets that you filled with colored water and set on a mirror with a vase in the middle? I saved for a long time to get her one of those. I still have that, too, in my crawlspace!

| I always got my mom Estee Lauder perfume - and maybe a box of Fannie May candies or slippers. Dad always got something for his model railroad or some type of tool (he'd be sure and tell you exactly what he wanted! When I was really little, I used to buy both parents those goofy little resin statues - the kind with a saying like "World's Best Mom" or something cheesy like that! Or candles! I think it was all I could afford on a kid's allowance!! Sure wish I still had them around to buy for today....

| I remember one Christmas when I was about 13 yo, after I had been babysitting on weekends and finally earning some spending money - I saved and saved and bought Mom 2 sets of Corelle dishes because all we had were ugly melamine dishes and she always said she wished she had pretty dishes. She was really surprised that I had saved so much to buy her a gift.

| I always bought my mom one of her favorite perfumes and made her something. She still had all my homemade gifts.

| i remember giving my mom some shaped candles (a penguin and a reindeer), picture frames, CD's and a hat and glove set on various christmases. but the all time worst has to be a jelly belly gift set. i was young and enjoyed gimicks and if you bought the gift set you got a plastic bag with the jelly belly bean on it for free. she didn't hate the set, but lets just say it never got opened. we still have the set and the bag. it's been almost 10 years now. i got my dad a glasses holder that looked like a giant nose one year. this year i bought him giant remote controls. i don't have a clue what i'm getting my mom this year. it's the thought that counts, right?

| I remember searching high and low for initial necklaces for my mom. She originally had 2 "D" necklaces (for Debbie) and she wore them all the time. Over the years, I probably gave her half a dozen different "D" necklaces. She still wears them often. For her 40th birthday, I'd been working two jobs and decided to go all out. I bought her a dozen of my favorite roses - Oceanas (nobody ever gave my mom flowers, so I didn't know what kind she'd like), made her dinner, and helped my brother bake her a cake. The middle of it fell a bit, but we just filled it in with icing. ![]() I threw her a big surprise 50th birthday party last year, but she swears up and down her 40th was the best birthday she's ever had. My step-mom loves Liz Claibrone perfume, so she was really easy to shop for. My dad was always more difficult. His favorite cologne is hard to find. So I focused on his interests at the time - lighthouses, the Wright Bros., watercolor supplies, New Orleans Saints NFL merchandise, and cars for his model train set.

| I would get my mom a 'good ' christmas ornament (one from the store) and always a homemade ornament. She still hangs most of them on the tree. My dad, I would always get soap on a rope and a pair of thick socks. I remember a couple years I bought him a new pipe (that was in the 1970's when you didn't have to be 18). Don't know what I will get my Mom this year (still looking), but, Dad will get his pair of thick socks and his regular present now---a big bottle of Crown Royal.

| My parents were (and still are) nearly impossible to buy for. One present I got them, I believe I was 14 or 15; I worked in Pacific Palisades (pretty ritzy area -- but still somewhat smalltown at that time) and there was a little antique store near the newspaper I worked for... I found an old wooden oriental statue -- it wasn't too much money, and I suspect the lady gave me a deal on it since I was a kid; they still have it to this day (ummm... 30+ years, yikes!) and I have to admit, I had pretty good taste back then!

| I can't think of anything specific I bought any of my parents when I was younger. Now, I buy Dad shirts, mom something, and step-mom usually some jewelry.

| I remember giving my mom perfume and lotion in her favorite scent, Dazzling Silver, several times. When I was about seven, I gave her windsuits - remember those? I've given my dad a lot of shirts, socks and golf accessories. The most memorable thing that my sister and I gave him was a huge Rokenbok toy set! It's a remote controlled construction set, and you can get all sorts of add-ons and other construction vehicles, etc. We saw a display set at the beach one summer in a toy store and my dad spent TWO HOURS in there playing with it! So we ordered him a set for Christmas one year. On rainy days when he couldn't work (he's a contractor), he would play with it! Heehee! Once my nephews got old enough to play with it, they loved it so much that he has since passed it onto them.

| I don't really member too much. I think I got my mom Charlie perfume one year (is that the one with the jingle about "bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan?) and a vase one year. But, last year was the best. My brothers and I got her a blanket that was made from a picture of the house she grew up in. I think that was the best gift we'd ever given her. My dad on the other hand, I really don't remember his presents. usually they were some fun little gifts like that fishing game with the magnets or tools. He's really hard to buy for. |
