Birthday Scavenger Hunt

Yesterday was DH birthday - and although he's never been 'into' celebrating birthdays, we try and make it special for him.

Now, I'm not sure if he's going through a mid-life crisis or what, but he's been doing a lot of walking down memory lane - reliving his younger days - and lately it's been all about the Beatles. He's been watching clips of them on Youtube, reading books, making lists of all their guitars and equipment he'd like to have one day, etc. So it was no surprise when he said the only thing he wanted for his birthday this year was the Beatles Anthology.

Of course I ordered it for him. And it didn't arrive before his birthday!

Luckily the girls all had a little something for him yesterday morning. Although I didn't actually tell him I ordered the Anthology, he assumed it was his present. I did tell him his gift was late in arriving - and he was really disappointed . Here he had a Sunday off for his birthday, and he could have been watching those DVDs all day!

So we decided to surprise him after dinner with a birthday Beatles Scavenger Hunt - if he discovered all the clues, he could figure out what his gift would be.

We cut paper squares and put the letters of the word "anthology" on each square, hiding them underneath objects around the house that were either a song title or part of the lyrics of a Beatles song. 'Ticket to Ride' was an old airline ticket; 'Baby's in Black' was one of the girl's dolls wrapped in a black scarf. The best one was DD Alexa - 'she was just seventeen....and I saw her standing there.'

DHs face was hilarious. You could tell part of him thought this whole scavenger hunt thing was stupid; and part was like a little kid, walking around the house diligently looking for a Beatles lyric, and proud of himself when he figured out the answer to a clue!! He was smiling ear-to-ear. And after he found the first two letters, he said, "I can already tell you what this spells," and we had to say - "No, no - you have to do the whole thing!"

Anyway, he had fun, we had fun making it up - and hopefully it helped up the anticipation for when the Anthology actually arrives!

DO any of you do stuff like this for special occasions? Does your family appreciate it?

What a fun way to help ease the pain of not having his present! I love the idea you came up with... Happy Birthday to DH!

We're boring... I like to think about stuff like that, but don't usually do much.

I had some friends one time that did something similar for their first anniversary. The husband had instructed her to go to a bar for the first clue, which she got after ordering a beer from the bartender. Then she had to go to a store, then to a restaurant I think. It was neat how he, and now you, think of those things!!

I always wished I'd be on the receiving end of a scavenger hunt, but nuttin' yet!!

Happy late b-day to your DH!!
