The person who ran back for forgotten items was in the wrong here. If you get out of line, you lose your place... simple as that in this situation, as you described.

If I'd forgotten something, I'd've finished my transaction and then gone back into the store (after putting stuff in the car) to get the forgotten items.

I doubt she forgot.... "Forgot" is going back quickly for one item, not an entire handful. She was trying to get a head-start on the check-out line by putting her cart there as a placeholder.

I had all of my groceries on the belt when the couple in front of me told the cashier they had to run out to the car to get the rest of the money they needed to pay for their purchase. And she said OK! So, she turns to me and the person behind me and basically says sorry, there's nothing she can do. After several minutes, when she graciously offered for us to go to another line (which was full, never offering to load our groceries for us), I let her know I was unhappy. She said "What can I do?" So, I told her to cancel their order so the rest of us don't have to wait - the people who left can wait to be re-rung up when they come back. So, she put their order on hold and rung me up. As I left? The girl came in and told her to cancel their order, since they didn't have enough to pay for it!!! (I ended up emailing them about that one, I was so hot about it).

Regarding bagging - I always (ALWAYS) place my groceries on the belt how I want them bagged and placed back in the cart- heavy stuff first, cans together, boxes together, cold stuff and meats together, fruit and veggies, then chips, bread and eggs. One checker actually noticed it and thanked me, since he could bag it as he rang it up - first one to notice in the 5 years I've been doing it. I don't even let DH do it anymore, when he comes with, since I'm convinced my plums will end up under a jar of pickles otherwise!

Good for you! That's the thing to do! How is the bagger supposed to know what else is in your purchase that isn't already on the belt? I wish people like you would run the country! I'm suprised that it took a bagger 5 years to notice!

Very odd. I can't imagine leaving my cart and expecting to be in the same place in line when I returned.

I do the same. Unfortunately, you'll sometimes get a cashier who still loads bags any old way they want.

I genrally put my groceries in order by refridgerated iems vs non refrdgerated items.
As for saving your place in line... no... that is not right. I would have taken them out of line and done the feign stupid look? OH were you in line? Work in Customer service... you will meet the nicest and the rudist people ever.

Who does that? Self centered people who think they are the only ones on the planet! I would feel way too self concious to do that - how inconsiderate!
