| Pixies please. I know I should be grateful, but I am really put-out with my job today. First, it is really a great place to work. It is a non-profit organization. I have alot of flexibility, I can leave if I need to if my parents need my help or if DS has dentist/doctor appointment, etc. And when DH was sick before he died, they paid me for 4 weeks that I didn't work. I have one direct boss, one other under him and then a bunch of people always asking me to do things for them. Most of the time I don't mind, sometimes it gets to be too much. Also, I have to be very, very careful how I respond to people. They can be unhappy about something and unleash on me, but I cannot respond back in anywhere close to the same manner. I have even been reprimanded once or twice because someone complained that I was unkind in my response, and it was basically a "no, I cannot do that for you at this time" kind of thing. But those are very, very rare. Often I am asked to work on my day off or late in the evening to do extra things. I don't mind most of the time. Like I said, I have alot of flexibility and they are very kind to me and my family. There are only 4 paid positions and a bunch of volunteer positions. Here's the rub, I don't have medical insurance and I haven't had a raise in 6 years. It is non-profit and I understand that. But, my two bosses both just received 5% raises and have every year since they came (I've been there longer than either one of them). I don't make a whole lot, and since DH died, I could really use a raise. I am grateful for having a job and one that is so nice to work for, I am just feeling sorry for myself today. With people being laid-off everyday, I have no right to complain. Thanks for letting me vent.

| Having worked for not-for-profit (associations) and having friends who still do, I feel for you. I know what it's like to have work dumped on you and have had the "your lucky to have your job speech." However, I would really investigate your lack of raises. I'd be asking for a meeting with your supervisor/manager. Do you have an employee or benefits manual that states their raise policy? I'd also go looking on monster or career builder for similar jobs and experience in your field and see what other associations/companies are paying. That way you'd have something to bring to the meeting besides "I need more $." Good luck and many ![]()

| The one time I ever got up the courage to request a raise, I went to my immediate boss and requested that I do an extra days work for extra pay. I was told 'no' as it would quickly burn me out and demotivate those I worked with. I then launched into my 'How about I do a longer work day EVERYDAY' speech and was granted the extra $$ I needed. Since I was already needing to work the longer hrs to get my job completed anyway, I ended up getting paid for most of the extra time I had already been doing for free! Pays to ask, but I would expect to have to back up my reasons with facts and figures (not personal reasons but work ones about how you need more time to effectively get the job completed and respond favourably to all requests etc). ![]() ![]() ![]()
