| Anyone have a pug? This Saturday my pug will be five months old. He learned the word "eat" in about five seconds. He will sit, stay and come when there is a treat in hand, but never when there is not. He barks at his own shadow, but will not give me a clue when he has to go out. I have read the training manuals and followed the doctor's suggestions. Will patience pay off?

| Yes! I have a 5 month old Shih tzu, as well as a 2 year old Choc. lab. We crate train both them. When the puppy (Tucker) is out of his crate, I just watch for him to sniff alot near the door we always go out. I use our back door to the yard during the day, and the front door for a walk at night. I always say "outside" when we go. He's not completely trained, but he is having fewer and fewer accidents. I think that we need to be aware of what their habits are. I know what Tucker does before he needs to go the bathroom ( We call it the poo - poo choo -choo because he walks really fast then goes around in a circle.) Good luck!

| My friend who has a pug is indoor pottie pad trained only. She has struggled with this as well. I think the indoor pads may be hindering this process.

| Has any other dog used your dining room as a bathroom, even previous occupants. His behavior almost sounds like he's smelling old stuff there. I found if there has been an accident, it is very hard to get the smell out. On the rare occasions our dogs have accidents, they always go to the same place. Both our dogs came to use around 13 weeks and were just about crate trained. We were fortunate that the kids were around, because if I remember correctly, it takes a long time before they can go more than 4 hours without a break. Also try to get your dog to respond to praise and pets rather than just treats. Once they have a behavior down, they shouldn't need a treat for responding. Diane |

| I'm a pug owner... are you a member of any Pug groups either in your area or online? your question gets asked all the time... and in some cases yes your dog will grow out of it but pugs love treats. they're a spoiled rotten dog, it's hard not to spoil them! that being said, I wouldn't want a different kind of dog. PugVillage.com is a GREAT resource (it will also give you warning signs to look for common pug diseases that come on quickly and are deadly) and it has a very nice message board (I'm KCHS_pug there, but I rarely post these days, too busy!) PM me if you have any questions! I've had a pug in my life for over 13 years now!

I hear you about not wanting any other kind of dog! Pugs are definitely easy to spoil and as much fun as they are stubborn. Thank you for the link to pug village. I'm heading there right now!

| LOL! I thought I would post this little quote I just read on Pug Village. "Housetraining a Pug is like trying to get my fourteen year old son to clean up his room"---Judy Baines, a PugVillage reader From what I just read it could take up to a year! He sure is lucky he's so cute! Thanks again for the link to pug village :-)

| When we first got Miss Haley we didn't have a doggie door. She was taught to ring a bell we had tied to the back door when she had top go out, It worked great.. Deb

| a lot of pugs do the ringing door thing Yuka learned early to bark or scratch at teh door and now she hops through doggie doors with ease (though a lot of pug owners are against that idea, never did get an explanation other than they're "dangerous") a lot of pug owners are excentric. every little thing is questioned and disected. they're still a dog, and they are trainable. they're stubborn. some argue that's because they aren't a 'smart' breed, but I argue the opposite. I think they're on par if not above a labrador. They have a thought process, they don't just blindly follow like so many labs. You can actually see in their eyes that they are THINKING about what you want them to do and if they'll do it. They are almost like a cat in the attitude department, but they still have that dog like quality of loving you unconditionally... for the most part ![]() here's my little Yuka Marie...

| Yuka Marie looks just like a grown up version of my Beau! You can just see the mischief in their faces can't you? Actually I haven't put in a doggie door because I live in Texas and it's way too hot outside for a good part of the year, and you know about pugs and the heat, I'm sure! When it's 102 degrees in August I don't let him out for long. I will have to try to bell thing. Hopefully he will get it! Thanks for sharing the precious picture and the great advice!

that Beau will get it. I remember Yuka at that age, I was ready to kill her at times lol... it lasts for a couple of years and then they calm down. She's a snuggler now, but back then she was a terror!(she was called the pirahnna in our home... now she's just a rug shark) She's a diva and is as bossy as all get out, but she's pretty well behaved... for a pug.
