I had to put my dog down today. His is name was Buster and he was 13. He sleeps in the laundry room at night and when I went down to take him out, he couldn't get up and it looked like he had a stroke. We rushed him to Tufts and they said that without doing an MRI, they wouldn't know completely. He should have bounced back a little bit. He never made a sound...he just tried to keep standing up. We thought it would be in his best interest to put him down. We didn't want him to suffer.
I didn't think I would take it this hard...but man I am a mess. I loved him very much and even though I though he was a pain in the butt sometimes, I feel really bad.
My DH David is worse than I am. I have never seen him cry so much.
We were laughing before we put him down because we were telling each other funny stories about him.
Our best story is when he was a puppy, David put him outside and he was painting the deck. I came home from picking Katie up at day care and went out back to see who David was talking to. He said " I am talking to Buster." I said "There is no dog out here." The dog wiggled out of his leash and took off. We ran around to find him and then cam back to get the car. I ran out in the backyard and there was Buster sitting on the newly wet stained deck!!! Dave yelled at him and he just ran over to us with his tail wagging, barking "where u been...I've been here the whole time!!"
The people at Tufts were really great and in a few weeks, we will go pick up his ashes and put them on the mantle over the fireplace.
I am going to miss my dumb dog.
Buster I love you!!

Im so sorry you had to put him down and I totally understand what you're going through. We had to put our beloved "Tara" down and it was devastating for both of us. It was harder on my husband too. We eventually got the dog we have now "Jake" and my husband mentions, now that he's getting older, the day we have to put him down is going to be another devastating day.
Well, hang in there. Your pet is a member of your family and you both need time to grieve. Like you're already doing, remember the fun times you had and it may make it a bit easier.
