traveling with a credit card problem

Not sure if this should go here, so to the powers that be, please move it if it fits elsewhere.

our friend just returned from traveling to Australia/New Zealand. on the second morning, the magnetic strip on his credit card ceased to function! he didn't bring much currency and no back-up card! the card company said his account was fine, just something wrong with the card and they couldn't get him a new one for a week. he was able to use the card if the place where he was would actually key in the numbers instead of swiping the card. or he found banks to get cash advances.

it would have been much easier if he had just packed a second credit card to use as a plan B.

I agree. I always travel with two credit cards. I'm sorry that happened to your friend.

having to key in the credit card number into the register really isn't a problem. It takes about an extra 30 seconds to do. I work part-time at a "red bullseye" discount store. It frequently happens where someone's card has been demagnetized or the strip has been scratched up from heavy use. We just quickly key in the number.

Wow. Sorry that happened. We always travel with various credit cards, cash and debit cards to get more money out just in case something like that happens....

I agree, I have had to key in a CC # at work alot. All registers should have this available.

i'm guessing he ran into people who didn't want to take the extra time or for some reason couldn't.
having a second card just seems logical to me.

I have only one credit card. I guess I'd be up Mickey's Creek without a paddle! Thanks for posting this. Knowing it ahead of time, when I go to Hawaii next year, I'll be sure that DH has a card with him as well. (I think that scares me more than the possibility of my card not working!)

I always travel with at least 2 credit cards. (Includes going 40 miles up the street to DLR). When I go to WDW, I carry 3 cards with me (I keep 2 in the safe), just in case. I've never had a problem with my main card, but I've had friends who've had a credit card become useless because of something the bank did to it. Some nonsense about charges looking suspicious because they are not usual, like hotels, etc in different locations. So they were told to call in and let the bank know that they will be on vacation. I think that's ridiculous, and maybe I didn't get the whole story, but I don't want to take any chances. I've had the credit company call when I've had "suspicious" charging, to check up on things, but I've never had the credit cut off. (DH got a call one Saturday when I had gone up the coast hitting about 4 Disney Stores within a few hours. But once he heard "Disney", he knew it was me charging. haha)

this happened on one of our trips to disney. we did call to let the company know that we would be in FL, but when the charges started popping up, they froze the card and called us, we just didn't get the message until late in the evening. thank goodness we had another card to use that day

ugh I didn't have a demagnitized card, but VISA flagged a legit purchase as fraud so they killed my card - never called me to tell me! If I hadn't had $$ on my debit card I'dve been stuck!

I only have one credit card as well, (Disney VISA, of course), but my Check card has the VISA logo so it's accepted as if it were a credit card in stores.

I always let the bank know we are traveling so there is no issue and I haven't had a problem. It takes just a few minutes online and so well worth the peace of mind. Because I always do it, the ONE time I forgot, they called me to make sure!

I do, too, but they flagged an online purchase (which I still don't get, most of my purchases are onlilne) so I wasn't expecting them to deny my gas purchase lol

It also works sometimes to put a plastic (grocery) store bag over the strip when sliding it into the machine. We had the same thing happen many years ago checking into a hotel. Thankfully we had a backup card but your pride takes a hit when the card is "invalid". I can't imagine traveling internationally with one card though.
