Frustrated

very irritated this morning....I have to talk with the Principal at the kids school this morning to discuss me taking the kids out of school next week....at what point did we all lose our rights as parents??? contrary to popular belief at the school, not all families can take vacation during the summer (especially when you have a husband like mine that was gone Mon-Fri from May thru the end of Sept). Not to mention my 2nd grader reads at a 5th grade level and far surpasses her classmates in other subjects (her teachers words not just me bragging) and my kindergartener has already met all of the requirements to pass Kindergarten....I've discussed the absence with my kids teachers and none of them have a problem with it, but at our school you are also required to notify the attendance secretary so then sends you to the Principal....so frustrated that the schools practiaclly interrogate you when you try to do something they dont agree with....grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

So it sounds like it is just the policy that the school goes by.
I don't think it is unusual.
for a smooth meeting!

Hopefully the principal will be very accommodating and it's just the routine he has to follow. Just remember this next time you decide to take a vacation when school is in session, and decide whether you want to do it again.

Not unusual...just annoying that even though the teachers are ok with it and we have even arranged for additional trip related work like a journal, that the Principals still get involved. A friend of mine in a retired teacher and said that when she taught absences only went thru the teachers.

I know lots of schools here have policies that do not allow for unexcused time for vacations. If they did not, they would have a steady stream of kids out and teachers would be constantly having to "re-teach" and make accommodations.

I think you have the right to take your kids out of school whenever you want. I am not sure you can expect accommodations. Your kids ae in K and grade 2. If they miss time, so what? it has no lasting effects.

completely agree! All I asked for was the homework they would miss ahead of time which the teachers were fine with

I know how you feel, our district gives unexcused absences for vacations. Good luck and try not to let them get under your skin. Have a great trip!

Our school district started the same policy this year.

Some friends of ours had a similar issue: they wanted to pull their grade 2 and K kids out to take them to Serbia for 2 weeks (dad was going as a guest professor to a university there). Thought it would be a great learning experience, and since dad's airfare and the hotel room were paid for, why not?
School said no. The school said the only way they could do it was to withdraw the kids from school and re-enroll them when they got back!
Well, our friends kind of did that. They withdrew the kids. They never sent them back! They homeschooled and traveled any time they wanted!

This is becoming more and more common, from what I understand schools get federal funding and attendance is one of those requirements. Many parents face arrest if their kids have too many unexcused absenses.

I would suggest planning ahead of the meeting, highlight all of the educational benefits that Disney provides, perhaps suggest that your kids so some sort of report for the class on what they learn. Check into Disney's Youth program - go to Disney Youth dot com - great opportunities for kids to learn, my grandkids love the program and I give them as gifts.
