Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area I was just curious as to what different communities are doing for the refief effort. The local radio stations got a drive together yesterday in Fredericksburg, Va and the outpouring was amazing. In 12 hours they filled up 12 trucks, 9 buses and raised $460,000 for the Red Cross. Attached is the story by the local paper (who also owns the radio stations involved)! Free Lance-Star article

Re: Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area There are a lot of things, and radio and tv stations are raising money. Peyton Manning (Colts quarterback) has donated some items for auction on the Bob And Tom network. My town's high school was contacted by the National Guard and got together enough food to fill a semi in one day. (the gaurd was being deployed and wanted food to take. My children's school is collecting $$ for the rest of the school year, and will send it each month. And, it will open its doors to children from the International School in New Orleans, with the families here taking in their families for anywhere from a week to a year, with the children all going to school tuition free. There is also the plan to "sponser" an inner city school once they are back in the city, and helping with supplies, both for children and teachers.

Re: Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area Our town has 400 people at our activity center. They also set-up a place for the peoples pets at the livestock area. The local pet rescues are helping gather pet supplys. Fundraisers are also in the works.. Deb

Re: Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area [ QUOTE ] Radio stations and local Tv are doing telethons. Also quite a few National Guard units for PA have been sent down there. [/ QUOTE ] And we are so proud of them! ![]() I'm frustrated with the Stroudsburg Habitat for Humanity, though. I've been trying to find out about volunteering to help rebuild homes in NO and no one from the local office will call me back. ![]()

Re: Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area Some radio stations had telethons, as well as the TV stations. Wilson Farms (think 7 Eleven) is doing a match: For every $3.00 you give, they will match it, and that will send 12 gallons of Wilson Farms brand bottled water down to where they need it. I'm sure over the next several days I'll see change collectors at registers and stuff. I'll be sure to drop in what I can. I watched the NBC telethon last night with Matt Lauer and cast and it was good. Jennifer

Re: Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area Our local fire department are in the midst of doing their annual Labor Day coin toss/road drive. They are donating half the proceeds to the relief effort. Several of the area churches are setting up fund drives, food banks, etc to help out. The local chapter of the Red Cross must have 6 or 7 blood drives planned, one every day!I also heard that some of the vendors at the West End Fair (local county fair) are donating a portion of their proceeds also, but I can't recal which groups. Even a little can go a long way! ![]()

Re: Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area The Memphis area is becoming a major evacuation area. We currently have over 10,000 evacuees, many of whom are moving to the area at least temporarily. We have opened the doors of our churches, schools, restaurants, entertainment venues, etc. I know the high school where I teach, in north MS has already enrolled 4 students from the coast and I expect more. Much money has been raised and plans are coming together to raise money for long term assistance for these folks as they attempt to rebuild their lives. The University of Memphis has opened their athletic facilities for the arch rival Univerisity of Southern MS football team to have practice facilities for the next few weeks until they can return home to Hattisburg.

Re: Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area In the Pensacola area, (even though we have little to no gasoline), we are hosting MANY evacuees in local shelters. The school district has reported that in the past couple of days, they have enrolled 300 children into local schools!!! We are a main staging area for the relief effort here . . . and a lot of the military people from the base in New Orleans and the bases in Mississippi are here as well. There's blood drives everywhere . . . there's tanks full of money in every store in town . . . there's a concert (311, Papa Roach and Unwritten Law) this Sunday and they are having a "pre-concert party" to make money for hurricane relief and there's rumors that they may donate part of their ticket profit as well.

Re: Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area There are a BUNCH of folks in shelters here in Atlanta. In fact, I heard that a significant number of STUDENTS from Tulane and LSU-NO (I think) are being enrolled at Emory and maybe at Ga Tech. I think some of those folks are being housed in the Tech basketball arena. On my way to the grocery store this morning, I saw a bunch of high school kids from the Key Club holding a car wash for hurricane relief. Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Re: Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area In Central TX we are housing a lot of refugees at our community centers and shelters. All of the area school districts are enrolling evacuees (sp?). ALL of the local charities plus Communities In Schools are collecting clothing, school supplies, and personal hygenie items. There are approximately 3,000+ active duty troops going for relief efforts also. The Goodwill parking lot here in Killeen was more like a drive-thru with people bringing in items ![]()

Re: Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area Our local radio stations had a huge drive and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars on Friday. Our school is collecting change. There were disabled american veterans outside the grocery today as well. I don't read the local paper or watch local news often, so I'm sure there's more I don't know about.

Re: Hurricane Relief Efforts in your area We live right on the LA border so we have gotten tons of evacuees in our area. It's been amazing to watch how everyone (well..most everyone) around here is stepping up to help accomodate everyone. DH's school district alone is expecting to have at least 500 students enroll by Tuesday. Ford Arena (a concert hall/sports arena/convention center) has been turned into a huge shelter for evacuees. Our local college sent out the sports teams to the Arena to help entertain the kids this past week. It's really been overwhelming. I was telling DH the other day that this has hit home with me so much more than anything else I have experienced in my life. I guess because it was so close to us and knowing that if the storm had gone just a couple hundred miles west, it could be us that is having to endure all of this. DH was in line paying for gas the other day and a guy in front of him was complaining about the gas prices going up. DH said another guy in line (from New Orleans) commented that he didn't even have a house to go back to. That is so sobering...
