Curious to know if we are paying out of pocket for meals next trip do we still have to pay the 18 percent grutuity if we are a party of 6? I know we had to with the dining plan and also what if we pay on separate tickets?
I'm pretty sure you will still need to pay the 18%. I remember when we got the Dining Plan and Gratuity was included! Those were the days!! We have a family of 6 so we can completely relate!
Yes -- any party of six (even if you divide up the check) will be charged an automatic 18% gratuity. It's based on total party/table size, not how the check is paid.
(Additionally, anyone using the Tables in Wonderland membership discount will be charged an 18% gratuity, regardless of party size.)
I'm not a fan of this b/c we had some bad servers last trip and I don't think they really cared b/c they knew they automatically knew they were getting a good tip.

Wow, that's good to know. We did use TIW but we were a party of 6 with the baby so I anticipated the additional gratuity. Very interesting.
To OP: if you feel like you had service that lacked and disagree with the automatic gratity, ask to speak with a manager. From what I understand, they have the ability to make adjustments as necessary.
We had awful service and food at Coral reef and did speak with the manager. He didn't offer up any discount nor any apologies for the food or service. I know we wont be going back to coral reef
That's a shame the manager was unhelpful. Since you already tried to address this while in the restaurant, I would also write to Disney's Guest Services about your experience, and the unhelpfulness of the manager.

We had a very unconcerned manager at Coral Reef. 6 of our 8 meals weren't just bad, they were completely inedible. We raised such a stink she finally took 3 of the meals off the bill, and we demanded they let us pay for the service we thought we got; we had to ask repeatedly for things, some things we asked for 3 or 4 or 5 times and NEVER got, the first round of food was incorrect, food delivered to the incorrect person, food we hadn't even ordered, waitress didn't notice the chicken was RAW (I mean blood on the plate raw). I believe we left a 3% tip. I'm all for tipping, and we usually leave at least a 20% if not more - but I'll also leave a 3-5% for bad service (we want the staff to know we are aware we need to tip). I even explained to the waitress WHY we were leaving such a bad tip.
If you ever have that problem again, ask for the manager and TELL him/her what you want. If s/he won't help you, ask for their boss and refuse to leave the table until you do.
Will do glad to hear we aren't the only ones that have gotten bad service in a Disney restaurant. I unfortunately think with the popularity of the dining plan the past few years we have seen a decline in the food and service in WDW. I can remember some great WDW restaurants we've eaten at years ago and have recently gone back excited for another great meal and left disappointed
