If you really want to eat there, then I would make a reservation just in case it happens to be really busy that day. You just never know what you're going to encounter when it comes to the crowds at a restaurant, but sometimes you do get lucky.

That's always my view as well. If you want to dine somewhere specific, it's always safer to make a reservation.
I spend so much time thinking about where we'll eat, what I'll eat, and so on (I'm a bit obsessed...) that I just wouldn't want to chance getting my hopes up and then finding out they were full.
I don't like surprises, so I'd make a reservation.

It's interesting that you all feel the same way about ADRs. I'm the opposite in that I would choose not to make them at lunchtime unless it was one of the more difficult to score lunches (Le Cellier / Sci Fi / Crystal Palace etc) or it was an exceptionally busy time of year.
I just prefer the flexibility of eating lunch when I am actually hungry and being able to leave the park when I was ready to, rather than having to fit my morning around my lunch time plans, particularly at a resort.
If stinkrbell feels remotely like me on this issue, I would think that Kona at lunch time is one of the safer bets for lunch with no ADR.
Obviously, if it's vital that she eats there, the ADR would be the way to go.
Ok. mattnkatsmum You have changed my mind. I have decided to not have a ressie. We get off the Dream that day and would like to hang out in Cocoa a little bit. I would hate to get involved in something and be having a good time and have to leave before we are ready.
Maybe when we check in they can call over for us and see if we can get in? Do the hotels do that? We are staying at CBR. Also..can we cancel day of ressie if I made one and it looked like we wouldnt make it?
This is crazy that I am actully doing all this debating over a steak!! LOL
The concierge at the CBR should be able to make the ADR for you or if your room is available you can call from there.
If you choose to make an ADR then you can cancel without penalty, I believe. At several WDW restaurants there is a charge if you cancel less than 24 hours prior but I don't think (please correct me if I am wrong) that Kona is one of them.
I love Kona. While I have never had lunch there, DH and I have been able to eat dinner there several times without a reservation mid week and at a time of year that was not busy.
If you have a smart phone, you can make the reservation from that. I was able to do this for a few meals in early March as I was on the bus to whichever park/resort.
