I've never done SoA, but we took our then 3 yr old to HDD last Feb. We really enjoyed it. The meal was DH's favorite of the whole trip-the cornbread is amazing, the strawberry shortcake is delish, and you get free beer! Win! As someone said, just going to Fort Wilderness is fun. I'd never been interested before but someday I would love to stay in one of the cabins, after seeing the area. The show is cute and corny. We sat in the balcony which would probably be perfect for your kiddos, being a bit removed from the action.
My gang would vote for SoA every time. In fact DS wanted us to go back again to see the SoA at Thanksgiving, which we did. And the kids all get up on the stage and learn how to hula. DS loves the fire dancer. HDDR was cute and our waiter (Bor) was a riot. In fact, he was more entertaining for us than the show. So, no, we wouldn't do HDDR again.
We had BOR last year,he was good. we had some old guy this year that didn't get into it at all
It was too hard for us to choose, so we booked both for our trip in September. We've did SoA a couple of years ago & HDDR in January. We had fun at both, the entainment is really great. Honestly, the food is not really good at either show, but we didn't care. We saw older kids at both shows and for the most part they all seemed to be enjoying themselves.

We have been to both shows and HDDR is far better than Spirit of ALoha. The food is better and the entertainment is better. We have been to HDDR two times and would love to go again. We have been to SOA one time and will not return.
If you are eating at Ohana for dinner, I think that would be better than SOA. The food at Ohana is great. Enjoy.

The HDDR is hokey, and goofy, but it's one of those things that should not be missed. The food is awesome, the servers are a HOOT,and it's just plain FUN ! I wish I could have taken my kids when they were that age. They would have complained all through it,but if one of them gets picked(or even if they don't) it's one of those Disney things they'll never forget. Heck,I still think about the first time I rode Pirates.. in '69. I can still remember goofin' with my brother, trying to check out HOT girls (HAHA ya right,at 13) and ...

I vote for HDDR...great down home BBQ...SoA had a weird twangy aftertaste in the meat that they served...it was really not very good..although the floorshow is fun.
I am thinking I am going to have to flip a coin on this one. I really cannot decide. I appreciate everyone's responses, it has helped a lot. I still think if I want a guarantee of a show we should do HDDR. But I don't know.
Lucky you! We arrive Sept 20 and leave on Sept 27. Staying at VWL. We're taking our 12 year old nephew and he can't miss more than a week of school. If we see you we'll say hi - if you happen to notice us, please do the same!
