Can kids get shrimp at Columbia Harbour House?

Hi all,

I'm sorry if this question was answered earlier on these boards...I tried searching but couldn't find an answer. (I'm not all that skilled at searching, though. )

Anyway, DD7 *loves* fried shrimp, and I saw that they have it as an adult meal at Columbia Harbour House. Can we get a smaller portion as a kids' meal? I know at TS restaurants, they're pretty nice about changing kids meal options, but I wasn't sure if they can do this at a CS place, too.

Thanks!
Carol

Last year we were told by a helpful cast member that Disney does not distinguish between adults and kids for CS. If you have a child with you when you order, they will usually have you order a kids meal. The only time we had a child wanting an adult meal was at Flametree - my DD LOVES ribs. My DH took her to a table and I ordered 3 adult meals. I would never have thought of bypassing the system that way, but since the information was offered (and not asked for!), I didn't feel too bad about it.

Some restaurants will offer a kid sized portion of an adult menu. Ask and hope for the best. Some managers are very nice and bend the rules while others are sticklers for rules.

Without breaking the rules too much, lol, you could order a kid meal and the adult shrimp then have your kid hijack your meal leaving you with chicken nuggets, lol.
There are no Dining Plan Police to speak of. Imagine Disney Dining Plan Police making a kid give back something he really wants.

The shrimp meal at CHH is quite good. It's my new favorite there (with broccoli) when I always used to get the fish and chips.

I didn't think you could order three adult meals at one time if you have 2 adults and 1 child on your dining plan. You can however, make two transactions with 2 adult meals and then another 1 adult meal. (Like the pp above said, they don't distinguish between child and adult CS meals...so you just use three credits).

The other option is for a parent to eat a child meal and help her finish off the adult meal.

I have heard on here that some CM's have no problem with giving you 3 adult meals, while others like HiddenMickey said above, will pay attention to your KTTW card and make you get 2 adult meals and 1 childs meal.

I myself have bought 3 adult meals (1 for my child) without even a funny look given.

You can always order them seperate like suggested.

Be careful with the trying to order 3 adult meals!! The KTTW cards do say how many adults and how many children are on the plan. We also were told by a CM at a CS restaurant that we could order adult meals for our then 9 year old. The CM said the kids portion would not be enough for her and that we could order the adult portion....that it was okay in the CS meals to do that. We had never heard that before so we were like, "okay, thanks!". Well, later in out trip my husband went to order our meals and he ordered 3 adult meals and one child meal.....well, my husband was totally embarrassed when the CM said he could not get 3 adult meals that our card says 2 adults and 2 children! He even pointed to the card my husband said showing him. My husband told him that another CM told us that it was okay. My husband was then politely told that that was a "NO, NO" and the CM apologized that we were told that. Needless to say we learned our lesson and NEVER did that again. I wish some one had told me that that varies according to the CM checking you out b/c we would have never tried doing it unless it were offered by the CM as it had been the one time. It really was embarrassing for my husband, as there were people behind him. The lack of variety of kids meals on the DDP is a downside of getting the plan IMHO.

I've done it both ways for the DDP - I've ordered 2 adult meals and 1 kids meal and we play mix and match with our food. I've also outright told the CM, my child is really hungry, is there any way I can get an adult meal for her and the CM allowed me to.

Now if you're paying cash for it, you can order anything you want and if Disney is just like anyplace else when it comes to the fish portions, that meal will most likely be more fries (or the other sides) than anything else. And for us, if I ordered something like that for Abby, as long as she eats the "expensive" portion (the fish) I wouldn't have a problem throwing away the "cheaper" portion (the fries/sides).

We always ordered adult meals for the kids and never once in the 5 years we had the dining plan was it a problem. You can use your points any way you want, so they do not know if you are super hungry and want to eat 2 meals at the same time. You can go and order all of your table service meals at one time if you want. My kids do not eat the unhealthy stuff on the kids menu and at the TS we always asked for smaller portion healthier food(like chicken or steak) for our kids to eat and it was never a problem.

If you want a kid-size portion of an adult item at CS? Don't ask when there's a long line. If they do it at all, they'll do it when they have the breathing room to make some magic.

Officially? Portion control is a critical issue. They know exactly how many portions they're supposed to get from a case of breaded shrimp. If they give someone a half-portion? Then, in theory, the other half-portion is going to waste.

One thing you can do is order the adult portion without fries (you have that option at a lot of CS meals - it's in the cash register, just not advertised on the menu). The price will be somewhat lower, and someone else probably has more than enough fries to spare.

Good to know! Thanks for the info. My original question was really about whether or not I could get the shrimp to count as a kids meal...sorry my original post wasn't clear. Thanks, Dave, for understanding me!

We'll probably buy the shrimp either with our adult credit or OOP, if we can't make the kids meal credit work. Thanks to everyone for their advice!

Ohhhh
What was said still would apply to dining plan credits. If they will do a kid shrimp then it should be kid credit. If you go with the adult credit and portion you could let the kid have the shrimp.

As I said, I've been allowed to use a "kid" credit for an adult meal because as mentioned, there is no difference in credits for CS meals. Disney even has on the DDP brochure - kids meals "where available." If they did differentiate, you would HAVE to eat only at places that do have kids meals, KWIM. So just talk to the CM and hope for the best (but expect a no). You never know when you'll get one who will spread some magic by letting you get whatever number of adult meals

In my experience, I have found the CS locations pretty inflexible switching kids' meal options, so I would be surprised if they would let you order the shrimp.

That said, I too have had occasions when the CMs have not been bothered about a child ordering an adult CS meal. It's another one of those strange Disney rules that WDW could easily change if they wanted to by differentiating between adult and child CS credits, so seemingly they prefer to leave that issue to the discretion of the individual restaurants.

There was a big sign at Wolfgang Puck Express, this last trip, stating ' Children MUST order off the child menu - NO EXCEPTIONS' so it's clear where they stand.

To the OP, I know that you weren't asking about whether you could use an adult credit for a child, but it's always worth considering - not to cheat the system- but to ask whether it is permissible at a given restaurant, just because the kids' options are often lousy.

I have never used the dining plan before, this will be our first time.

That being said, I thought that Disney did differentiate between kids credits and adult credits. Page 2 of the brochure shows a receipt and it lists kids and adult credits separately.

It also says that kids must order a kids meal where available. So if they don't offer a kids meal, then they can order an adult meal.

Well thats my understanding of it and, I guess I will find out soon enough.

Adult and child table service credits are differentiated, but not counter service credits, though it is clear how many adults and children are in the party.
