I have over 700 subscribed threads in my home page. Is this normal??

If I hit unsubscribe, will that clean up my home page?
Will I still be able to reply to threads?
Is it okay not to subscribe to a thread?
And finally what does subscribing to a thread mean anyway??
I've been on these boards for over a year now, you would think I would have asked this before and/or figured it out by now.
