Has anyone signed up for Southwest's credit card in order to get the 16 points which get you a free ticket? I'm wondering if there is a catch or something.
If you read the fine print I'm sure they have it in there but after you get the 16 Credits to earn the credits you have to spend around $19000 to get another 16 credits for a free flight. So while getting the 1st free flight for signing up sounds nice, I can buy airfare for at least 4 people round trip for at least 4 trips and still not spend $19K and in my daily life I wouldn't spend that much on credit so at least for me I didn't find the card to be worth applying for.
But if you will use the card for your everyday spending and pay it off to avoid any interest and might spend that much (after the introductory free credits) to get the RR credits then it may be worth it for you.

I've signed up for the SWA credit card and I've gotten THREE free flights so far in the two years that I've had it. Of course, just about everything I buy goes on it including heating oil, gasoline, groceries, and anything else that I would be paying off anyway. I just note the charge in the checkbook and deduct the money in advance so I can pay off the bill when it arrives. Heating oil alone got me a free flight. If you can control your spending and plan accordingly, it's a great deal.

The ad says that you get 16 credits first time you use the card. And 16 credits gets you a free flight, right? Is that part true?
I'm actually thinking that if that part is true, I'll sign up and get the free flight, but probably not keep it for very long. Although I think I'd be better off with this credit card than the AA card I use now for everything. I hate flying American, and I love, love SW.
I've seen that promotion and it appears to be on the up and up.
We've had the SWR card for a little over 10 years and have flown frequently on our rapid reward tickets. In addition to using it for all our expenses and paying it off every month, we also participate in their partner programs and earn frequent bonus credits on things like rental cars, hotels, and dining. SW also sends out several promotions a year to existing cardmembers that offer additional bonus credits. (i.e. spend $500 over 3 months on grocery & gas and get 2 bonus credits.)
Since airfare from Phoenix is usually one of our biggest expenses on most of our vacations, it's always nice to have 1 or 2 free tickets ready to use. Also, if you can't use your free ticket before it expires, SW will reissue it for a $50 fee.
If you are looking for a new credit card that you can use frequently and pay off every month, the SW card is a good one imho.

Shhhhhh..........2011 May POP/POLY Surprise Birthday Celebration Trip PTR Here
I signed up in May for the CC on my way home from WDW at MCO. They say you are eligible after your first purchase. I think the annual fee is $59. YOu are also required to pay a few fees on your own. I haven't received my second statemnt yet telling me that I have gotten the reward. I did call SW and asked ans what they told me is that there are x amount of free seats per flight, so when you have a flight in mind you should call as soon as possible to book it. I figured I will never get a flight under the annual fee, so nothing really to lose and I will cancel it after the first year.
It's a good card, just read the fineprint. If you can pay it off monthly you could do alright.I got my free flight right after I charged my first item.It took about 1-2 months to show up on my RR on the SW site.I'm not thrilled with the 59.00 annual fee but it's still pretty good and my interest rate isn't horrible compared to other cards.
