Please forgive me if this has been asked before, but has anyone tried to take their pins through airport security recently? If so, were you wearing them on a lanyard, or did you just have them packed in your carry-on bag? My boys would really love to wear their pins, but I don't want to take the chance of having them confiscated....
Just put them in their carry-on, it may take an extra 5 minutes at security, but it's worth it to know they are safe. I have had hundreds of pins through security and it has never been an issue.
Being your children love wearing the lanyards so much I would say let them wear them. When they are ready to go through security merely have them remove them from their necks and put then in the trays that get xrayed (change and other small objects) and pick them up at the other end.
I would do it this way rather than walking through the xray section to eliminate time of security possibly body checking further, walking through xray again, using the wand, etc. when the metal dectors sound off.
I vote for wearning the lanyards with pins. They will only miss the pins for a minute or two while going through xray and everyone is happy.
I have many pins permanently attached to the sling bag that I take with me to Disney. I just put it in the bin and it goes through fine. Sometimes the TSA agents helping get the bins in the machine will point it out to the TSA agent manning the video screens, but usually they don't.
