So our flight leaves super early (6 am) out of Boston. We are taking a 2:30 am bus out of Dover , NH to get there. (This is the earliest one). The bus arrives at BOS at 4:15. I am going to check in for our flight online, but we will still have to check luggage and get through security. Do you think this is enough time, or should we head down the evening before and stay at a hotel near the airport? I don't really want to spend the money when we would be leaving the hotel at 3 am anyway, we wouldn't even get a whole night there. What do you think? We always get there 3 hours early and end up sitting around for quite a while waiting but I don't want to take any chances.

I wouldn't think the airport would be crowded at that time of day. However, they also probably don't have as much staff at the airport at that time. I would think you would be ok, but if there is any kind of delays with the bus you would be in trouble. I personally wouldn't risk it, but it would likely be just fine.

My only concern would be what if something happens with the bus (mechanical, a traffic accident delaying you, etc.) which would lean me towards staying near the airport. Otherwise, you're probably fine!
If we have one of those early flights at our airport, we generally plan on being there about 1.5 hours early. I agree that if there is no problem with the bus, then you'll be fine.

Generally, they say to arrive 2 hours prior to your flight time, you should be fine even with taking 15 minutes off that time, especially that early in the morning. However, I also would be worried about the bus. If it is delayed by anything, whether it be traffic or a mechanical problem, you will be cutting it close. It might cost you more to stay at a hotel near the airport, but to me the extra cost would be worth the peace of mind.

I think you will be fine with your current plan. The busiest airport times tend to be business flights, week days between 7 and 9 am. Not many flights actually depart at 6 am. Our home airport is Los Angeles International, not a quietplace at any hour. We would plan to arrive an hour ahead at that time if we were checked in online. Depending on your airline, you may be able to check baggage at the curb. What airline are you on? Southwest does not board until 15 min prior to flight time while Delta is usually 35. Security at 5 am should not be a problem.
We are flying JetBlue, and Boston does have curbside. I feel OK about the bus, barring any accidents of course, as I'm sure traffic at that time of day is minimal. Thanks guys, you made me feel better!
I'd worry about the bus too. I've taken the shuttle bus to the airport many times & my last trip we ended up pulled over the side of the freeway for (I think) about 20 minutes or so because the driver's side windshield wiper went flying off & since it was raining it wouldn't have been safe to continue before it had been replaced. This was with a company I've used many times in the past without a problem & will continue to use in the future. We also hit traffic. I made it to the gate & my flight but I was extremely glad that I always give myself two hours minimum. All of that to say that I think I would be opting to stay at a hotel near the airport.
At that hour of the morning you should be fine. And traffic should be light, so barring any mechanical problems with the bus or bad weather, you'll be fine.
I've left Logan at that time - it's really quiet. I think you're allowing plenty of time (I don't usually leave myself that much time). I know the general route that the bus will take, so I wouldn't be concerned about traffic that early.
When we fly out of Seattle, it's a 3 hr drive, so I always book an airport hotel- we do 6AM flights too, and I worry about delays, accidents on the freeway, etc.
So we drive down to Seattle the day before, and it becomes part of our vacay. We stop along the way at The Premuim Outlets, go out to dinner, there's a Cheesecake Factory near the hotel. Enjoy the hotel pool if it's summer.
You could plan some fun stuff to go to while you're in Boston. Our holiday starts when we leave our driveway
