WOW, I bought my tickets for August 2012 on February 3rd and I got our round trip tickets for a total cost of $285.00 per person, traveling with 5 people...For kick's I just went on Southwest to look at the pricing and flights now are 352.00 per person . I was curious after reading all the post's about deciding on when to buy because of the prices do to the gas prices. I say if you find a price in your budget than book because the gas price's are sure to go up...
Just like you I am holding out for cheaper flights but I think the longer I wait the more I will be paying in the long run. Right now the cheapest flight I have found are 236.40 (taxes incl)

Wow!! I wonder why it is so expensive to get there from Texas? The cheapest flight I have found is hovering around $400!

Southwest has a CREDIT CARD. Here's the deal, you sign up for their credit card with an annual fee of $69. They give you 1 FREE ROUND TRIP TICKET after you use the card to purchase something.
So you buy something with the card, pay off the balance, collect the round-trip ticket then cancel the card before the next year.
In the end you get one round trip ticket for a total of $69.
We booked our flights last week with SW. We were hoping for some good deals, but since we're 60 days out for our trip, I was a little nervous to wait much longer. We always buy the Wanna Get Away tickets and we were able to get round trip tickets for $183 each. One of my daughters has to come back earlier than the rest of us. Her return flight on Wednesday was only $69. I wish we could have gotten the other flights that cheap! We actually bought one-way SW flights last year for $59. I haven't seen prices go that low since then.
Part of me thinks that flights will go up due to the summer season and increasing oil prices. Another part of me thinks I may have pulled the trigger too soon. Hopefully the prices won't drop. Even if we're able to get credits for a drop in prices, I'm not sure when or if we'll be able to go back in the future.
I too am playing the "let's hold out til the price comes down" game. With or without baggage fees and how much is your RT flight going to cost me? I am not stressed yet! The last time I flew to WDW was back in March of 2008. Back then I bought 3 RT tickets a month before we left. The price was better closer to the trip than further out. So I figured I might have to wait til May- This trip I am not too willing to take a chance in May, better in April.
Good Luck to everyone who is in my boat!
and.... You are so Lucky for all the people that got good rates!
After reading all these yesterday I decided I better buy for our July trip. Round trip for 5 adults sfrom Islip, Long Island to MCO was $1048 today it's over $150 more total. I am glad I took the plunge instead of waiting......

This is true and I have done this. Usually when you sign up for a credit card you get 25,000 miles. Another tip is that you can go to Sounthwest.com and sign up for their click and save emails etc... if you can wait long enough, eventually they will send you an email to apply for a credit card and get 50,000 miles instead of 25,000 miles. Same with the Disney Visa. Eventually they will send you a thing in the mail for $200 Disney dollars when you apply for a card. It's a good deal when you can use credit cards to your advantage, but we never spend what we don't have.
That being said, I have my Southwest credit card & I also do online surveys in exchange for Southwest points. Does anyone know if you can get a points credit if your fare drops??? Confused? You know how you can get a cash credit from Southwest if your fare drops? What happens if you book using your points and your fare drops in price? Are you just out those points or can you get a points credit? I'm sure this sounds petty but I am always saving up for our next trip.

where are you leaving from? JFK or LGA and what airline? if the airline charges bag fees it may be cheaper to head out to
long island?

I am not sure if I am obsessed or just plain nuts.... but I did some research today. I looked at both SW and Airtran. I put our trip 1 mos from the date in the airlines; 1 month is TOO expensive and available of flights were not goo. Then I did the trip 2 months out- and I found lower prices and a little better of availability.
I found on Airtran 1 1/2 months away (that would be May of the first week) $108.00 per person- total w/ taxes $432- add baggage fees (4) $105= $537.00 Not too bad, because the flight is still pretty low.
My only problem is trying to find a flight around 5pm to come home on June 23rd.
I think I am obsessed..only because these stupid airlines are playing this game, otherwise I wouldn't have to check EVERY DAY on times and prices!
I know I will have to buy the airline tickets next month, in April.
I wish everyone much Luck in finding cheap flights!!!

Not petty at all and with the points not expiring anymore, it actually makes sense to keep checking. I've done this twice and you just rebook your reservation on points using the lower level and the difference will be credited back to your account. Actually what you'll see is all the points for the old amount being credited back and the new points deducted.
