YIKES!! Thank God the plane landed safely, I hold my rosary in my hand when I fly, I get nervous with the slightest little bump, so I can imagine how frightning that was!
The FAA have reported that the plane struck multiple birds (Turkey Vultures) on take off affecting both engines. So I think we were very lucky.
wow glad all is ok in the northeast we worry about the geese

Wow! That sounds so scary! I hate take off. But that comes from the accident at Detroit in the 80's. the one where only a baby survived. Yeah, that one. I was driving down the road they crashed on and could smell the burning wreckage. I also had a friend on the flight. I really don't like to fly but will do it if necessary, with the appropriate drugs. Kudos to you for getting back on a plane so soon.
When the Air France plane crashed on landing in Toronto a number of years ago, it was lucky that it was on the runway that has a ditch beside it so it ran into the ditch instead of onto one of the busiest highways in North America in rush hour.
It was FEET from the Hwy 401. This one "landed" so close to the incredibly busy hwy that cars on the 401 picked up passangers as they scamble out of the plane and drove them back to the airport.
I had heart palpatiations reading your story. My first reaction was "I'd drive Home" but then saw you were from the UK. I don't know how you got back on another flight. Did they dump the fuel over the homes surrounding the airport, a lake or what?? CRAZY.
I love flying, but that is something I would not want to experience.
I believe when they do a fuel dump it's sprayed out of the aircraft and evaporates very quickly and does not fall back to earth
Wow, what an experience. I am glad everyone is ok and the plane landed safely back at the airport. I too have a fear of something like this happening. If DH was on the plane , I doubt he would ever get on another one!

Yeah, I do something similiar. I have a book about flying without fear. I leant it to our priest and he said it helped abit. Honestly, when I am up in the air that high, I need all the help I can get LOL .
I HATE flying but in order to get most places, I have to do it. I do have my meds on stand by too for "just incase".

wishing I hadn't seen this since I'm a nervous flyer and we fly to Disney a week from today! so sorry you had to experience this! I was on a plane once that lost an engine and had to turn back. that scared me away from flying for 5 years. however, I do have faith and have to trust God if He's planning on keeping me around awhile, I will be fine. However, I do travel with Ativan! It's a good thing my love for disney trumps my fear of flying!

That certainly was terrifying. So glad the pilot got the plane back down and everyone was safe, Im sure emotionally everyone will be scared. It probably would take me awhile to board a flight again. As we land in Orlando I am looking around at all the homes and wonder what the heck you would do if something happened, it is all houses everwhere, but then again I guess every airport it is like that.
One of the things my flight training went through early on was to be looking from the minute you got off until about 2000 feet. "I can go there. Those look like power lines over there. That's a nice grass field but it's too close to a school." etc. Modern jet aircraft have some performance criteria they have to pass. Lots of numbers for single engine. Takeoff run on one engine, climb rate on one engine, stall speed with full flaps, etc. There's even one "minimum airspeed for air restart with single fuel pump operation."
That said, you still get that feeling when even little things seem to go pear shaped.
