One more thing to think about is that even though you may be picking your seats now, those seats may be changed by the airlines at any time. If there is a plane change, a schedule change, or a butterfly burps over Indonesia, the airline may change those seats you have picked.
In this case it may be best to fly SWA so that you can pick your seats when you board the plane. Even pay extra for the Early Bird seating so you have a better chance at "A" boarding.
When we have done reservations I am on the phone with Daughter as we are doing the reservations so we are looking at the seating and sit like 9abcdef then go a row in front or behind depending on how many of us there are. with 6 kids and 4 adults we have enough adults so the kids sit with us. We only had a seating issue when we needed to fly home emergency then we were all over the plane and it was not a good time for all the stress of finding passengers to switch seats so the kids could be with adults. Other than that even if there is a plane switch we have sat together.
I asked DIL and when they had the group it was more complicated getting the seating. So we probably will stick with 2 reservations like before. August travelers maybe we will run into each other. Will definately be checking SW Monday Cinderabby thanks for the tip.

Nova, were you and your daughter able to get "adjoining" seats that way? Mom and I were thinking that's what we would have to do... split into 2 reservations. I looked up group info on AirTran and their discount is something like 10%.

I'm flying there 8/8 and coming back 8/19 as of now. I think the whole board will be there!
I usually have my passporter pouch attached to the stroller, not one to wear things around my nexk, if I have shorts with a belt loop I attach it there. So I will have my eyes open for anyone with passporter stuff.

Off topic, I know, but this is a good idea. Lenny just asked me the other day if I'll wear my Passporter pouch this year but I'll already have a lanyard with Abby's GAC in it (it's plastic and waterproof) so maybe I'll hang it on Lenny's scooter.
If you want to sit together I would avoid Southwest. Almost all other airlines let you choose your seats. Some have a charge but I don't mind paying a little extra to have your seat guarenteed.
@Michael -- Thanks! DH is a frequent business traveler and HATES that about SW, so it pretty much ruled that out. We've decided on AirTran for that very reason. They fly out of two different airports here (Dayton vs. Cols), so luckily it's the one closest to us
@Nova -- We'll definitely have our Passporters on (well, Mom and I!) and I think we even realized we'll be at the WLV at the same time too We are so ready for this vacation!

For our group of 12, I ended up splitting our reservation into two groups because Delta would not allow me to purchase more than 9 at one time on my AE Delta card (free luggage ). Fortunately, I was able to get 12 seats all together! (My DH reserved the remaining tickets).
My only problem with Delta is the constant changing of our flight times!!!! I think it's switched at least 4 times since I booked last August! We booked for a 8:45 departure and currently it's 7:45 a.m. ~ hopefully it'll stay this way
What airline are you flying - SWA? If it is SWA, the fares open up on Monday morning and I would book as soon as they come out for that many people but that's just me. I would want to know that I do indeed have tickets for everyone. And maybe I'm just weird but once I get tickets, I leave it at that - I don't search to see if the tickets have gone down in price or not. As long as I have my tickets, I'm happy - and ignorance is bliss (if tickets go down and I don't know about it, I'm still happy).
I think if I were you I would rethink that strategy of buying your tickets then never checking again to see if they have gone down. Especially if it is on SWA. If your ticket goes down the airline with give you a flight credit to be used towards the purchase of another ticket within the next year. If you bought 3 tickets for $300 RT and in between buying them and leaving for your trip, the tickets go down to $250 then you would get $50 per person in flight credits. That's free money. I check at least once a week once I buy my tickets to see if they have gone down.

We love flying AirTran but aren't they merging with SW in April? We always got great deals on AirTran and now we have to price out SW since they bought they bought them out and SW is just ridiculously overpriced.

I love that about southwest and its sooo easy to get the credit. I have $$ waiting for me when they open dates later in sept. for my return flight!!!
We are flying out in May with AirTran and 14 tickets and 3 under age 2 (for a total of 17 passengers). We went through group sales. The tickets were about $20 each cheaper and we will get reserved seating "as close together" as possible for no additional charge. I'm not worried about all being together. Just so some family members are together with the little ones. With group sales they did say if the tickets go down 30 days prior to leaving we can get a one time adjustment.

Two years ago, I booked 10 tickets with Jetblue. I booked through their group reservations. We paid the exact same amount as everyone else. No discount for a group. This trip, I will probably book two separate reservations and do it online myself.
