Need 9 airline tickets -- WWYD?

We are traveling with a large group of 9 all on the same flight. We would prefer to sit together, for obvious reasons. Airfare should open up within the next few weeks for the middle of August. I know the fare varies, etc. We are mainly worried about 2 things -- sitting together, and the first flight out in the morning (6 a.m. arriving at 10). How soon would you book? Would you wait and watch prices?

What airline are you flying - SWA? If it is SWA, the fares open up on Monday morning and I would book as soon as they come out for that many people but that's just me. I would want to know that I do indeed have tickets for everyone. And maybe I'm just weird but once I get tickets, I leave it at that - I don't search to see if the tickets have gone down in price or not. As long as I have my tickets, I'm happy - and ignorance is bliss (if tickets go down and I don't know about it, I'm still happy).

Thanks! That's kind of what I was thinking. I like to have everything done and ready to go, but I feel bad paying so much. It all evens out, I guess, for the security of knowing everyone is on the same flight and will be sitting together. We are flying AirTran. We thought about SW, but my husband doesn't like it b/c of the seating arrangements. This way we *know* we will be together -- it's our family w/2 boys, sister's family w/2 boys and our mom/their grandma, so you can probably understand why we want to be next to each other.

Okay. That's what I was thinking, just needed somebody else to rationalize it

For a group that large, I think I'd use a travel agent. If not, make sure the website for your airline allows you to reserve that many tickets at once.

In the long run, if you book when they open, you may not really be paying a huge amount IMO. As compared to those one day sales, yeah it will be more, but as the flight fills up, that's when they jack the prices (the old supply and demand pricing). I look at it this way - the cost brings peace of mind. When we flew in 2011, I rented a car (yeah, I know, not airline tickets but bear with me) and Lenny wanted the Cadillac - one of the more expensive cars. I know how much those things go for and just basic, my insurance coverage wouldn't pay for much if something happen (accident, whatever) so I looked into the rental insurance. For a caddy, it cost several hundred dollars. Did I pay it? Yes, I did because it brought peace of mind. Lenny is a good driver, I couldn't reallly forsee anything happening, but it really bothered me that there is always a chance that something could happen (someone down on their luck sees an expensive caddy, hits it on purpose thinking we have money that they can use, that type of thing even though it does sound extreme but that's how I was thinking). Did I need to spend all that money? When all was said and done, no I didn't need the "extra" expense, but the peace of mind it brought was just huge. To this day I don't regret spending that money and I equate it with buying the airfare. Yeah, it might be a little more today than it might be in 3 months from now but at least you have the tickets in hand, you know everyone will be sitting with whom they want to, and you're not left scrambling saying "now what do I do?"

I know I've gotten carried away but even without rationalization, if your gut says do it now, listen as you won't regret it IMO.

I am wondering what difference there will be in doing a group rate. We do have 10. I think you need to call to do the group thing so does that cost more than on line reservations? I can remember not being able to book everyone on one reservation befor and having multiple reservations for a trip. Last time Daughter did her's and I did mine. I left her know the flight infor, and seats and she went right on and did her flight and seats.
Thanks Cinderabby for the info that Monday the dates will open up because that is what Daughter has been waiting for. If SW is going to have better price than US air.

You're welcome. I'm waiting for Monday too because our trip is 8/9 to 8/19 and back in November, SWA only released airfare through 8/9. I could get us to Disney but I couldn't get us home (not that I want to come home, but I have to) so I have my ticker set for Monday (and I've been checking too in case they changed dates - which they haven't).

HA! Looks like Nova, CinderAbby and I will all be there the same time! We leave the 11th and fly home the 18th

GingerJ, we're actually in Fairborn! Hi, neighbor! Hope you're keeping warm today

Nova, were you and your daughter able to get "adjoining" seats that way? Mom and I were thinking that's what we would have to do... split into 2 reservations. I looked up group info on AirTran and their discount is something like 10%.

I'd definitely call the groups desk. For United, I know their group fares were cheaper than what was online, when I booked our group this past November.

Splitting into two reservations is a very good idea.

Seating 9 people together plus getting a reduced-rate airfare can be challenging. The lowest-priced rates are usually assigned to each flight in limited quantities. Often when I book those, there's just a handful of tickets available at that rate on a given flight.

Naturally, the longer you wait, the harder it will be to find a block of seats all together, and generally speaking, the airfares available when a flight first becomes available are not going to be the lowest rate (unless something horrible happens to the price of jet fuel after you book).

Getting seated together is way down on my priority list when compared to getting the right airfare. While I understand that it would be nice to have your party seated all together, I'm not sure about "obvious reasons" besides that you want to socialize. Your family will be spending a fair amount of time together once you get to WDW - four more hours on the flight down plus four more hours on the flight home (if you still have anything left to say by then)... just how much is that worth in dollars, cents, and complications?

These days, it can be tough to get a party of 3 seated next to each other. It'll be harder to get a family of four in the same row (often, two on one side of the aisle, two on the other). Getting another 5 seated in the adjacent row?

Often, it's necessary to plan on doing some horse-trading once you've boarded - negotiating with other passengers to switch seats. Obviously, it's easier to get one person to switch seats than an entire row, but if your negotiating skills are good, you never know!

You might want to give a call to WDW reservations. Sometimes Disney Air can pleasantly surprise you on rates, and as they may control a block of seats, they may have more flexibility with the seating arrangements.
