renting car from enterprise or other off site airport companies

how difficult is it to rent from enterprise or other car rental companies that are off site at the airport in orlando? is it too much of a pain in the neck to take the shuttle with a family of 5?
I am looking for the best deal on a rental car for our august vacation and before i go finding a good deal off site and getting my hopes up I need to know if its actually worth it. PS the kids are 5 1/2 year old twins and an almost 3 year old.

You can always have one person in your party do the car rental and have the rest of your party take Magical Express. Then you can just meet up at the resort later!

It's not too painful. You'll just have to haul your luggage onto the shuttle for the short trip off-site.

I can't specifically comment on Enterprise, because I've never rented from them, but I have rented several times from Thrifty, and several times from Alamo before they moved into the terminal.

Thrifty's facility is a short shuttle-bus ride away, and is probably the closest off-site rental company. The shuttle bus runs about every 15 minutes, and the ride itself is only about 5 minutes. The facility is easy to find when you return the car and the building has lots of covered and indoor spaces to keep you and your family our of the weather (hot, cold, or liquid) while you do your paperwork.

Alamo's old site was a good 10-15 minute bus ride away; I am glad they moved into the terminal.

I have rented from Thrifty several times because they were the cheapeast, sometimes by as mush as $75, when I used the codes and coupons from Sams Club. Be sure to check any warehouse clubs you might be a member of for rental car discounts.

Sometimes Alamo is the cheapest, and they are right in the terminal, so keep your eyes on the on-site places, too. Also consider how much money you save by going with the off-site company - if the difference is only $20 or $30, I will pay a little more for the convenience of renting on-site. But $30 is about my limit on that - any more, and I will rent off-site, happily.

thanks everyone. i just booked with alamo and will keep watching for a better rate. i couldn't believe it was cheaper to pick up at the airport and return to the dolphin than it was to pick up and return to the dolphin for the same number of days. Go figure!

Check with Alamo at the Car Care Center by the TTC. I found that it was cheaper to rent there than at the Dolphin. The location code is OR5. Also, check the cost of renting at the Dolphin and returning at the Car Care Center.

Good luck!
