| Airline removes life vests to save weight, fuel Is this what we have to look forward to as airline service continues to decline??? Airline removes life vests to save weight, fuel - News - MSNBC.com from MSNBC.COM TORONTO - An official with Air Canada’s regional carrier Jazz says the airline is removing life vests from all its planes to save weight and fuel. Jazz spokeswoman Manon Stuart said Thursday Transport Canada regulations allow airlines to use floatation devices instead of life vests provided the planes remain within 50 miles of shore. Safety cards in the seat pockets of Jazz aircraft now direct passengers to use the seat cushions as floatation devices.

| That comes after no luggage checked or carry on, no clothing allowed, and being charged an additional $150/person to actually sit in a true seat instead of a bench which will be an additional charge of $75/person. Oh and floatation devices of any kind maybe be rented for $15ea. or life vests for $30ea. |

| Hahaha! Leave it to AirCanada.... I do everything I can to avoid flying them anyway because they basically womp. Although, they are right, other than the odd Great Lake, maybe Lake Winnipeg and the Strait of Juan de Fuca/Strait of Georgia, there really isn't a lot of water they fly over, I've often thought parachutes would be a better idea than life vests with all the routes I've ever flown in Canada and the USA anyway... The sad part is, that they're going to have to redo the safety video they show instead of having the flight attendants "perform" it and the best part of the video is watching the male flight attendant pretending to blow on the tube of the life vest

| Jazz is the crappy regional charter branch of Air Canada, they're scrambling to stay afloat (hard to do without a life preserver) and any way to cut corners makes sense. Honestly, it is a nice way to think outside the box to save the airline money, and anything that doesnt' greatly impact the customer, then I'm all for it. Paying for a second bag, etc....hey, that works for me. I don't necessarily know if I like an airline scrimping on safety equipment to save money, even if you could argue that it would never be needed...but still, better safe than sorry. Besides, how much weight could 50-100 life jackets really add? Tim |

| I think they could save several thousand pounds if they would just use wood for wings. Hell all they really need are a few sheets of plywood held on by glue(How much could a case of Superglue be anyway?) Instead of flight attendants they could just have maniquins on wheels that go and down the aisles serving drinks(You throw money at it-- it throws a beer at you) And why would they possibly need a pilot and co pilot? One guy up there who knows what he is more or less doing could save a bunch of money!!! No need to thank me.

| Call me stupid (it's happened before : - ) but I have never heard of life vest being used to save anyone's life if a 727 loses its engines and nose-dives into the ocean. Maybe I just missed that story, though. Obviously one would need one on a boat, but on a plane has anyone every heard of people actually using a life vest after a crash into the sea?
