Last time we flew, DH's bag was searched because of the M & M tubes of quarter, quarter, penny, quarter, quarter, penny (as suggested by someone on these board for penny presses). I had packed all the bags, so when asked, what was in the tubes, he didn't know, and I was busy getting shoes back on the girls. They never explained why they needed to know what is was, I never thought about pipe bomb shape or bullet shape.
I will remember to put it in the bin the next time.

I take a roll for laundry (I tend to do long trips). Last time I had to remove the quarters, and pass through screening a second time with the quarters in the open.
(my entire carryon had to be rescanned without the quarters).

This reminded me of my trip from ATL to MCO this past April. I was in the security line with a security person in training (there was someone next to him showing him the ropes).
So when it came to my stuff I was glad I'd taken the roll of quarters and pennies out my carryon and put it in the bin with my shoes. I figured they would search the roll of quarters/pennies.
The trainee said to the trainer - "Looks like we need to double check this bin."

The trainer looks and says to me "Going to Disney World? Is that a roll of quarters?" I said yup and he told the trainee it was ok - he saw that all the time in peoples stuff when they are going to Disney.

Our bag got pulled out of line for extra screening. When the agent got to the roll of quarters she said that was what they had flagged.

I would leave them in your carryone, avoid the temptation of being lifted. Just like others have suggested, pull them out and put in the bin. I do thing with my toileties bag with my allowable liq/gels. I don't give them any reason to need to search my bags.

I, too, have been pulled aside and had my bag searched (and swabbed for explosives!!!) due to my M&M tubes with quarters and pennies. The next trip, I had the quarters and pennies loose in a ziplock bag and I put them thru the bins. I "loaded" my M&M tubes on the plane....gave me something to do on the flight down.

Are there any problems with just putting the penny and quarter rolls in with checked-in luggage.... Or will the security folks open your luggage and look through it.. This is a big concern for me..... Please advise....

I haven't tried it, but I would guess it would look the same on the x-ray causing them to open it. I always take ours with us in the carryon as I wouldn't want it to get lost.

Hi guys just got back. Thanks for telling me to put them in the bin in a bag. I did they just said your going to wash clothes on vacation ? I would'nt your on vacation ! I wait till I get home. I told them that I wash at least one or it would be impossible to catch up when we get home. We took an early flight 6:30 am on a wed and I would definitely fly this early in the morning and on a wed. They were all in a good mood. As for coming back not so much. We felt tike we were being treated like cattle !! They were not very nice. We went down on us air and came back on airtran. Our flight back was at 3:30 pm. I would try to avoid after noon flights. We did'nt have time to go to the parks because you have to be at the bus 3 hours early. We thought that we would have time in the parks in the morning but you don't. Maybe next time we will take a late flight out.

That was my thought...Why bother having to explain to the gate agent that you are carrying rolls of coins and then have to expalin why you are carrying them...

I had them with my carry on bags because of the weight. Just my luggage alone was 48 lbs ! I did'nt want to pay over weight charge. I felt I did'nt over pack but you know how woman pack we always feel we might need it ! And this trip we did ! All we did was sweat and we had to take at least two showers a day some times three. We had to put fresh clothes on each time. And I also had to wash clothes twice because we ran out of fresh clothes so quickly. I only planned to do only one trip to the laundry mat on this trip. But not with the the Florida summer sweat fest !!!!

DD always has a roll in her carryon and I always forget about it.
It must be pretty common, because usually the TSA agent looks at her, asks "Do you collect pressed pennies?" and off we go

Once, when I was coming home from Hawaii, I had purchased a silver bracelet. Forgot about it and when I went through the metal detector, the alarm went off. I was pulled to the side, and a female TSA agent had to wand me. She was very nice and professional, explaining what she was going to do. She did tell me that she thought it was the bracelet, but that she still had to wand me. And she was right. I guess what I'm getting to is that, even something a innocent as a souvenir bracelet might set off an alarm, so put everything in the bins.

Also, about those bins, make sure to wait until your bin is out of reach of the person behind you, that way they can't reach over and grab something from your bin.
