A Weird Flight Question

Okay...so I originally booked for a 13 day 14 night disney vacation and I bought flights from Detroit to MCO accordingly.

Since then, my FH2B and I decided we wanted to make a pit stop in Jamaica for 3 days and 4 nights.

We would be flight from Detroit to Jamaica and then from Jamaica to MCO.

The thing is..it would cost more for us to change our our airline tickets from the original direct detroit to MCO flight to our new one because of change fees. So we decided to just purchase new flights and keep our old one for the flight home from MCO to Detroit.

Is this making sense

My question is...if we just skip our first original flight that was the direct from Detroit to MCO ...there airline would not just cancel our original flight home from MCO back to Detroit would they? OR....do I have to call and cancel our first flight and say we still want our second one?

I just don't want to end up not being able to fly home

This will depend in part upon the airline. You run the risk that, because you didn't fly the first leg of the reservation, they will cancel the return flight.

I'd talk this all over with an airline representative before you do anything further, since each airline will have different rules, depending upon the terms of the ticket you purchased.

is it in addition to the original days or taking place of some of the days. if it is part of the original 13/14 you could take the original flight to mco and then take a separate flight from mco to jamaica

Definitely talk it over with your airline first.

Most airlines will cancel your return flight if you don't take the outbound segment. Your safest bet is to book a flight from MCO to Jamaica. You'll probably need to claim your bags and recheck them from MCO, but it beats being stranded in Orlando without a ticket home.

Ok, DH and I did this on our honeymoon and it was the exact same trips!!

I had booked our airline tickets to and from Disney first then we decided to go to Jamaica as well. So instead of accruing $$$ in change of ticket fees, I booked our Jamaica flights within the Detroit flights:

Let's say these are your travel dates:

10/01 DTW to MCO at 7am
10/01 MCO to Jamaica at 2pm (to allow enough time for customs, etc.)

10/05 Jamaica to MCO

10/12 MCO to DTW

I know it looks like a lot of unnecessary traveling but we only had to have a layover once and we chse to go to Jamaica at the beginning of the honeymoon to get that 1 stop out of the way (vs doing extra flying after a long vacation)!

I hope that makes sense. But I when I saw the same cities and the same destinations!

What a coincidence! Did you enjoy your trip to Jamaica? We are going to the Sandals Whitehouse. My family thinks its completely ridiculous because the Sandals commercials seem so corny but I think it will be fun. Did you stay somewhere else on your trip? I have never been there, but I have been to Mexico and I was a little worried about being safe while we are there (had some issues in Mexico) Do you have an recommendations?

Well, I can't wait to go on the same trip haha!

We stayed at the Royal Carribbean and I was shocked that if we had picked Montego Bay we would have been right next to the airport. Yeah, they don't advertise that!

We enjoyed it. Would I go back? Probably not. It was nice and relaxing, but I wasn't all too impressed. And the drive to the resort (the 2nd one after Montego Bay) was "interesting" in that you drive through such poverty-stricken areas to then be driven up to this luxury resort. Quite a contradiction.

But I would always tell someone; try it at least once. The all-inclusiveness was definitely fabulous!

We didn't do any of the excursions as I'm "wary" (we'll call it that) when traveling but our in-laws did some and enjoyed them.

I mean you have to be careful whereever you go and admittedly we had no instances of anything other than friendly service.

I guess only on this board is MCO considered a long-term layover, huh?? We're doing THE SAME THING next summer too.....1 week in JA at an all-inclusive, and then "stopping over" for a week in Disney before heading back home!! FWIW< I agree, if you can get the times to fit, fly ifrom home--> MCO-->JA-->MCO-->back home again!!

ETA: This is our 3rd trip to JA....we love it there....the people and culture are incredible.

I would see how much it is to go from Detroit to Jamaica, Jamaica to MCO, then MCO back to Detroit on the correct dates. If that is cheaper, then just cancel the first flight, not change it, then book that one.
