finding flights seems complicated

I'm not ready to book yet because I haven't set my dates...and I want to leave room for flexibilty because getting flights out of maine can be costly...Ive signed up for alerts for 2 airports in Maine and one out of N.H....which would be horribly inconvenient, but I've been doing some dry test runs it's proving difficult...I will see fares that look reasonable or good and when I try them I can maybe get the departure flight, but then the return times are all blacked out...I'm thinking a T.A. might be best for me...maybe through AAA?

Everytime I have received a price from AAA it has been more expensive than going directly on the airline website myself and booking. I also find using the websites like Expedia, Orbitz, etc. I get more expensive prices. I don't know why this is but I always book myself to get the cheapest flights.

I just wanted to add, I set my WDW dates and book a room only, then look for fares. If need be, I feel it's easier to tweek a room only res, then before the 45 day mark if I'm adding a DDP I switch to a package. You didn't mention what dates you are looking at.

I have a great deal of flexability..I have usually gone in Fall...but I was seriously looking at last 2 weeks of August..I want to have room to tweak if the airfare is right...but I really want to score free dining...with me paying for 4 of us...the savings are ridiculous and no other offers have come close....the only thing is I won't know till the end of january if I can have that August time off...cause it's considered primetime at work...I would like to be able to have 2 weeks off in a row..that way I might be able to fly out on a Wednesday or Thursday...I would prefer to arrive outside the weekend

That's a good plan, as usually flights tend to be cheaper outside of the weekends. I tend to look at airlines who fly where I want to go - my preferences tend to be JetBlue and Southwest for the prices they charge and the service you get. I also use Kayak to check for fares on all airlines on the route I'm looking at travelling on.

Jet Blue has been the best option for us for almost all of our trips. For our trip we got a fare of $129 pp round trip . When I talked to my AAA TA she said they add on a $25 booking fee to each airline ticket they book.

I am thinking of watching jet Blue exclusively...The airport is about 2 hours from home, but I'm thinking it's going to be my best deal

I understand about not sure about your dates. I would book the room now and you can always change, as suggested before. Hopefully things will go your way!

I agree. . .I hate the airline ticket game; should I buy it now? Ooo what if it goes down next week?

But I tend to also look and see when the best dates are for my room and then try to look for tickets around that time. That way I'm not randomly searching for cheap flights at various times of the year, season, etc. - that can get pretty complicated, as you said.

But once you have a more concrete timeframe nailed down, like August that you're considering, you can better search for those cheap tickets.

you can find a deal on JetBlue! People seem to have really good luck with their fares!

Yes it can be frustrating. I have booked our March resort but will wait awhile to book the flight. Especially since it is just Hubby and I, if a large party is going and we need to have seating together because of kids then I book the flight. I usually end up seeing flights cheaper after I book, which is really frustrating. Need to fly US air as hubby has a voucher from Aug's trip he didnt take. We like to fly out early both ways. The only time used TA we ended up flying out later in the day and that was a real bummer. Especially when I looked and there were seats available on the early flight.

We live in Boise and even though we have an airport close, we have to fly somewhere to get anywhere. So flights tend to be pricey. I strategy that has been very successful for me is to get a window of when we want to go. Then hit ALL the big travel sites and SWA. I make a spreadsheet of the flights and their prices. Once I find a flight I like I will check the airlines website to see if there is a better deal there.
For us it works. The other thing we do to save some money is being willing to stop multiple times along the way. Our next trip we're going to take a red eye overnight. Its about 100 cheaper and gets us another day!

I find that out of Manchester (that horribly inconvienant NH arport LOL!!! ) I get the best rates about 3 months out.
As far as cheap fares, your going to find the best rates on Jet Blue out of Portland or SW out of Manchester. You saying your two hours from Jet Blue leads me to believe you are halfway between Portland and Bangor? I would keep your eye on Manchester too, it's only an hour further than Portland and sometmes they have some super $79-$89 one way rates to MCO.
