For those who are afraid to fly...

ABC News is starting a series calle "Things That Go Bump in the Flight" written by a pilot that explains some of the sounds you may hear. Since knowledge is power, knowing what that "clunk" is may ease your anxiety. Here's the link to the first installment:

Re: For those who are afraid to fly...

It still wouldn't help me. I have flown before and I swear I will never fly again unless I had to get to my dd in a hurry. That's the only way!

It's not so much the noises or the turbulents, I think it's the clostrophobic factor. I can't even be in a car without the window down.

I read a post on another board yesterday about people being stuck in the monorail for almost 2 hours when it got struck by lightening. There is NO WAY! They would have had to get me the heck out of there. It totally shut down so they couldn't even open the doors!! I don't know that I can ride it again after hearing that!

The funny thing is, I have been in a hot air balloon with no problems. As long as I have fresh air, I'm OK!

Okay, no more posts like ladyt's until after I make it through my first flight in Nov.!! We're still hoping I can get my scaredy pants on the plane.

Re: For those who are afraid to fly...

Sorry Melissa! It's really not scary at all. I flew a couple of times before the clostrophobia set in. It really is a great way to travel and a safe way to travel.

I'd be OK if they would let me open a window! (I don't think that would be a good idea though!)

Re: For those who are afraid to fly...

Even though you can't open a window, it helps to turn the blower on. The air blowing on you trickes your brain into thinking it *is* fresh air and really does help!

Yeah I think we should restrain from that one! I understand the claustrophobia thing. I get panicky in packed elevators and similar situations.

Re: For those who are afraid to fly...

Thanks for that information. It does help to know what is going on.

Even after many flights I still jump when the landing gear comes down. But once I realize what it is I get really happy because I know the ride is almost over!

Re: For those who are afraid to fly...

Great link, thanks

Another good thing to try if you're scared of flying is a fear of flying course. I don't like flying and have taken this course twice now, it explains every noise and everything to do with flying, down to how the pilots are trained. The site I use is www.fearofflyinghelp.com and the course is free. It helps me to do this before I fly and I find I fly much better now and I'm not so jumpy. Turbulence still gets me but this course explains everything about that too so at least I know what's going on.

Re: For those who are afraid to fly...

We were scheduled for a trip to WDW the week of 9/11. When we did make the trip I was nervous about the flight. The airline I think it was Continental, gave us earphones and you could listen to the pilot talking to the tower. For some reason that helped. My husband hates to fly. His doctor gives him medicine and he does fine. The alternative is 14 hours in the car with my two kids. No Way!!!!!!

Re: For those who are afraid to fly...

This is great! I'll be emailing a link to my mom! She's really nervous about flying. She hasn't flown since the late 70's or early 80's.

Me, I love the little pockets of air you hit once in a while. I love how my tummy seems to get into my throat. The kids and I always say that it's our first thrill ride of our vacation!
