Blue Man Group

Anyone seen them? Preferably at one of their "permanent" homes? Ideally Chicago?

Are the poncho seats better? Or are they mostly bragging rights and the show is better if you sit farther back? What about the balcony? The website says "no participation or interaction" but I don't know what that means -- I can't see that there would be much participation or interaction for most of the main floor either.

DH has wanted to see them for a while, but the show would eat up a chunk of time on a long weekend trip, not to mention a nice piece of our budget (though I'd probably give him the tix for his birthday). If we go in Chicago we need to take DD -- wait for it to come here we can get a sitter. Though she'd probably enjoy the show. And there are no guarantees on the wait-for-a-tour approach.

I don't feel like I know enough about them or the show to make an educated assessment. So please enlighten me!

From what little I know about BMG, it is mainly participation.

And how does the audience participate?

Someone here can probably explain a little better, but you might want to search for blue man group on youtube... it's kind of hard for me to explain...

I saw Blue Man Group in Boston. The audience participation was limited, except at the end when crepe paper in rolled out, which goes over everyone's heads. There were a few people who were part of the show, but probably less than a dozen. I also suspect some of the "audience members" were actors.

I really didn't like the show. I expected more music and special effects. I personally found much of the humor childish-spitting out cereal, pretend vomiting. The people in the splash zone wore ponchos, but really didn't need them. I thought there would be paint splashing, but there was not.

As a conservation found the rolling of the paper hard to deal with. It seemed like such a waste.

The show is very loud. They do offer ear plugs. I don't know how old you child is, but it really would depend on her ability to tolerate a very loud performance. My boys enjoyed it as teens and I think that's a good audience for it.

I live not too far from Chicago, and I have seen the show 5 times now. Every time friends or relatives come to town this is one of their "must dos" in the city. I have enjoyed the performance every single time! Very little changes from year to year but this is such a fun and action filled show that the time goes by quickly while being jam packed with action. Anyone over the age of ten or thereabouts should enjoy the show. You need to read well (and quickly) to get the most out of it.

Audience participation includes the passing of toilet paper overhead across the entire main floor while music plays and strobe lights flash, a surreal experience- not to be missed in my view. Actors often wander out into the audience, walk over the backs of chairs, balancing by putting their hands on the heads of the audience. I think that the best seats are in the center of the main floor a little ways back from the poncho section.

Go early enough to enjoy the interactive stuff in the lobby before you go in to the theater. Be friendly and talk to everyone and you might be chosen to go onstage. And check your playbill, you'll discover how much t.p. is used and how it gets recycled! Everyone we have gone with has enjoyed Blue Man Group, from my Mom in her 80s, to my pre-teen son, to guests from Australia. They all thought it was not only worthwile but one of the highlights of their visit.

Wow, this really shows that tastes differ! DH and I went to see the show in Germany last December and didn't like it at all. It's mainly three guys painted all blue doing pantomime, playing with paint and tubes. It's also supposed to somewhat mess with your senses/ surprise you, I think. I don't know, we thought that it was just not funny. The jokes were, as Huntermom said, childish, it was VERY loud, and we kept checking our watches when it would finally be over.

As you can tell from the very different opinions on this show, it's something you either love or hate - nothing inbetween.

Hope this helped a bit!
