Question Planning 10th wedding anniversary in the Adirondacks or Catskills

DH wants to spend our 10th anniversary somewhere that's, GASP, not Disney! I asked him where he wants to go and he said the Adirondacks or the Catskills. We would be going in the summer - late August or early September.

Which would you choose - Adirondacks or Catskills? What I want to do is fly into NYC, spend a few days (DH has never been there) and see a few shows (including a Disney one - gotta get my fix somehow!). After NYC, I think we should take the train north, rent a car and stay in a cabin.

Any suggestions of things to do, places to stay, restaurants, etc? Or suggestions on the travel plans? I'll appreciate any input I can get. As I said, I just started reading up on the area. I did see that they have hot air balloon rides in Lake George - I think that would be

Thanks!

There are lots of nice Bed & Breakfasts in both Catskills and Adirondacks..... You could also try Mohonk Mountain House.....a bit pricey though. You should consider flying into Stewart Airport (SWF) which is north of NYC and South of Catskills.

We used to live in the Adirondacks and there are a lot of nooks and crannies to find!

You mentioned Lake George. It is a touristy little town so you can usually find something to do. There is a car show the first weekend of September even with fireworks!...in nearby Ticonderoga is a revolutionary war encampment the same weekend... Restaurant week is around the 8th to the 13th..Jazz weekend is the 13th/14th...I've never stayed here, but friends have stayed in these varying places...units at the Quarters at Lake George. I know they begin fall discount rates after Labor Day...Fort William Henry Resort reminds me of a confrerence center...Surfside on the Lake reminds me of a silly lakeside inn, but they do have "lakeside cottages"... lot of cottages at The Twin Birches....The Lodges at Cresthaven are interesting - expensive cottages - but the fall brings rates to about $300/night - much less than other times of the year...

You also have the great olympic city - Lake Placid. I just love it there! The shops are so much fun to look inside. This is the place if money is no problem. They have a gorgeous resort - Mirror Lake & Spa - that have regular lodge rooms, but also cabin suites. Lots of moola though.

Okay...too much so I'll stop.

I the stop in NYC and then heading off for some romantic time in the Adirondacks. Enjoy!

Wow, it's amazing to even hear Mohonk Mountain House and the Catskills. I lived in the Hudson Vallet NY before moving to PA. While it is very nice there (especially leaf season) there are limited things to do in certain areas. It really depends on your interests.

I worked at Mohonk for a few years and this resort is beautiful. They do not have tv's in the resort or air conditioning (I think they may have updated this within the last few years). The big sell on this resort is what activities it offers. They have hiking trails, an ice rink on site, a spa area, fishing in their lake and other events planned by the activities department. This place is amazing and is often frequented by actors and actresses (Julia Roberts, Macauley Culkin, Phil Rizzuto, Jule, etc) due to it being secluded. However, as another poster mentioned it is pricey. Expect to pay between $300-700 a night (all inclusive-meals, activities, etc). That said, I would suggest trying further upstate NY.

The adirondacks are nice and there are also several activities to partake in. Fishing, boating, museums, and cruises are among some of the things to do. Lake George is a very popular tourist destination in the summer due to this. Great Escape (a theme park owned by Great Adventure) is also located up there, as well as several other smaller venues. They have a wax museum of celebrities, a haunted museum, outlets, and other themed areas.

Good luck in your plans.
