| Charleston and Kiawah Island We just returned from a wonderful week on Kiawah Island and I wanted to share our opinion of the island. Kiawah is great for a quiet getaway particularly if you enjoy golfing, nice bike rides and runs (wonderful bike paths), and a close quiet beach. We saw all sorts of wildlife: deer, aligators, small hammerhead sharks and dolphins. Some of the residents on the island volunteer to take care of the Loggerhead turtle nests and were checking the nests each morning for stragglers. It was a great education. There aren't a lot of great choices for dining on the island, but there is a nice shopping area w/in 4 miles. It's called Fresh Fields and it's got a great grocery store with higher end stuff and a fun place for drug store fountain drinks and ice cream. There is a good grill and pizza place and a Marble Slab there too. We took a few day trips into Charleston for kyaking, touring Fort Sumter and shopping. It's a neat city that doesn't feel like a big city. We at at Jestine's Kitchen that Oprah and Rachel Ray rave about. It was wonderful in a simple southern home cooked way.
