Question Hawaii help - Big Island

We are going to the Big Island in October with my parents, so we will be 3 generations:
Dad - 66 (own timeshare, so go annually)
Mom - 62 (ditto)
DH & me - 37
DD - 8
DS - 4

I would like to do a luau and have seen some advertised on gohawaii.com, but I don't know if they are the best or just the ones who purchased that listing. The prices for all of them are comparable, some discount for couples, DD's would be OK and DS would be free.

However, I'm picking blind and don't just want to chose based on cheapest. If you have gone to luaus on the Big Island, please give your feedback - like it or not, good food but bad entertainment, bad food but good entertainment, is it on the beach (preferable), that sort of thing. We are staying on the Kona Coast.

TIA!

Heather, I wish I had been looking at the General Forums before now! I'd be interested in knowing how your trip was and which luau you decided to try. I'm going to post some of my experiences anyway in case someone else is looking for some Hawaii luau info.

I've been to the island of Hawaii several times, always staying on the Kona Coast. On my last trip we tried the luau at the Marriott in Waikoloa. We thought both food and entertainment were very good...not great, but not bad in any way. The luau is on the beach, but not near the water, if that makes sense. It's held on the sand behind the hotel, but is still a good 100 feet or more from the shore.

I've also sort of seen the luau at the Hilton Waikoloa where we've stayed. I've only seen it from afar, so I can't really speak to the food, but the entertainment sounded really good, and we heard lots of excited clapping, hehe!

I've heard that the luau that's next to the hotel at the northern end of the Kona shoreline is pretty good, and right now for the life of me I can't remember the name of that hotel even though I've walked through it several times!
