Nancy and I are going to NYC for a day. We have been talking about things we want to see and do. I thought I would get some opinions on what you guys consider " Must Do's" in NYC.
We are thinking of pretty much being in Mid Manhattan area. Few things so far is Empire State building, Times square of course, Disney Store, M & M store. I would like to see at least part of Central Park, though it looks like Central Park could be a whole day kinda park lol.
Any other ideas on what to see or do? We figure we don't want to go to the top of the Empire State building if it is raining. Same for Central park of course.
We are also trying to do this as cheaply as possible. and walkable.
I think you've got a good start already with your plans - to me, the Empire State Building is a must, although I have to be honest, we prefer the views from the Rockefeller Center - that way, you get to actually see the Empire State Building from up high!
You're right about Central Park, that could be a whole day in itself. We walked through it a few years ago, as in all my trips to New York, we'd never made it there. We only spent a couple of hours there and only scratched the surface.
To me, the other must-do is the Statue of Liberty, although obviously that's going to take you out of mid Manhatten, but that's something I think everyone should see who goes to New York.
If you have only one day and want to see a bunch of things, i would suggest doing the Grayline bus tour. It stops at all the major sites in the city so you can get on and off as you would like. We did that back in October and really enjoyed it. We got off at the Battery Park stop so we could walk around down there and we saw the Statue of Liberty and then got back on and got off again on Lexington Ave.
We went a few years ago with our church. Basically we started at Rockefeller Center and just walked around. We went to all the places you mentioned and even went to the Giant Toys R Us store. We also went to the Sony store and walked to the Plaza and saw the horse carriages and some of Central Park. We did a lot of window shopping...looking at the shops was so much fun. We went to Trump tower and had a great lunch...fast food.

You've got a good list going. I've been to the top of the Empire State Building and its beautiful! If you're going to Rockefeller Center, you might consider the NBC Studio Tour. It's been a while since I've done it, but last time I don't think it was too expensive. And there are some great little places to eat at Rockefeller Center too. Head over to St. Patrick's Cathedral too. It's a beautiful church.
A lot of great suggestions Thanks!! We are planning on going to Rockerfeller Center, never realized you could go up to the top though, I think we may do that too.
Statue of Liberty we want to do, but decided we will make a trip in the Summer and do lower Manhattan. For some reason I also want to see the Brooklyn Bridge, Why? I have no idea, but I want to see it lol.
I would say ice skate at Rockerfeller Center (if it will be winter when you visit), walking around Grand Central in itself can be fun, and check out some of the off-Broadway shows. I have seen some great ones and they cost a lot less!

What time of year were you planning on going? I wouldn't mind waiting in line for discounted tickets for a show at TKTS if the weather was mild; but at the end of January it is too cold for me to do that.
One time I took a couple of Passporters to The View Lounge at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. You are up on the 50th some floor in a circular room that rotates 360 degrees in an hour. You get a great view of the city. The napkins have a map of the city on them so you can identify the buildings you see. They have an all you can eat buffet. It's either dinner or cheese and dessert. I love the Apple Pie mocktail. The View actually is two floors. The bottom floor is a full service restaurant and very pricey. The top floor is the lounge with the more affordable buffet. I'm always on a budget so I have never experienced the actual restaurant. But both floors have the 360 degree rotating room experience.
