I am just curious about the Atlantis resort in the Bahamas. Has anyone been there? Is it worth the price (it seems very expensive)? How many days minimum would you recommend (do you only need a couple days to see all the pools, sights)? What is the appeal given the cost to stay there?
From strictly a visitor standpoint (we took the ferry over from Nassau), I didn't think that it was worth the money. However, there were some areas of the resort that only guests of the resort were allowed to enter.
The beach was nice, and the aquarium was nice, but not overly impressive in my opinion. Then again, I grew up spending summers at the Jersey Shore and live within 45 minutes of the Baltimore aquarium, so maybe I'm just spoiled...
Anyway, that's just my 2 cents...It was nice, but if it costs much more than staying at other resorts, I would probably stay somewhere else on the island, and just visit.
Scott, here is a tip, you can stay at the Comfort Inn Suites across the street and get the same resort bracelet and privileges as the Atlantis guests for 30-40% less. We reserved for one night to get the bracelets on our day in port off the Wonder to swim in the pools. My Dh and I agreed that it was a great deal to stay at the Comfort for $189. The food at Atlantis is very costly, also. Disney is better!! (IMHO) Good luck.
I was there March 6-9, 2003 with my sister-in-law. She coordinates her company meetings so I got to tag along. All I can say is, I'm glad I didn't have to pay for the room! $589 a night!!! I went because it really was a once-in-my-lifetime trip: it only cost me $300 for a plane ticket and a few meals.
To say it is EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE is an understatement. Everything has an automatic 15% gratuity added to it. My pancake breakfast at Murray's in the marina cost over $12, a burger lunch $15 and the cheapest dinner buffet was $46, not including drinks. I'm glad I packed some granola bars and my Brita refillable bottle - I don't think I would have survived without it. The water was pretty bad - we even brushed our teeth with my filtered water. The large size bottled water costs $6.32 so my refillable bottle really saved me!
As far as the resort, yes, it's beautiful. There are a lot of water slides and pools and lots of marine life. But there's not a lot of information available so sometimes I wasn't sure what I was looking at or even if I was looking in the right place! The beaches are absolutely gorgeous and I had the best massage in a cabana by the pool.
Our room, while it had a picture-perfect postcard view of the ocean, was just your standard hotel room (complete with noisy airconditioning). There are definately less expensive places to stay. I would stay elsewhere and visit because the architecture really is stunning.
While we were there, my SIL & I figured out that for what it cost there (4 days/3 nights), we could have stay at the Grand Floridan cheaper!! And longer!
Personally, other than a port-of-call during a Disney cruise, I don't plan on going back to Nassau. And even then, I don't know that I'd get off the ship!
I took the tour of the Atlantis with the Disney Cruise, it was a beautiful hotel. I think it would be fun as part of a honeymoon or something, but it is expensive and i'm not too fond of Nassau outside of the hotel. It's the kind of place I would not want to walk around alone, especially at night.
Scott - here's another vote for staying across the street at the Comfort Suites. That's what we did and we saved a ton of money. You still get access to everything you would if you stayed at the Atlantis itself. We didn't have any concerns about walking around on Paradise Island at night, but I can agree with others that Nassau is another story. We found a couple of places to eat not at the Atlantis and didn't find them too expensive (think Disney prices), also at the Comfort Suites you get a complimentary continental breakfast so that helps to save money.
I think we stayed for 4 nights and found that to be a good length of time. If you have more questions feel free to send me a PM and I can give you more specific info.
