Gatlinburg, TN hotels/motels?

We're thinking of taking the kids to Gatlinburg, TN for a few days this summer. We usually drive there for day trips, so I don't know much about the lodging there. If anyone knows of a clean hotel/motel close to the main strip in Gatlinburg, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks!

Re: Gatlinburg, TN hotels/motels?

I stayed in Pigeon Forge at the Shular Inn. It was nice, clean and relatively inexpensive. They ahve indoor and outdoor pools. We stayed in the back building, so there was less noise. I got the best price directly from their website. To get to Gatlinburg, you can drive down to patriot Park, park there and take the trolley (or you cna catch the trolley right outside the hotel, too!). I think it's 1.00 each way. That's where we parked to go to Dollywood, too. That is either 50 or 75 cents each way, a lot less than the parking fee at DW's parking lot!

I don't remember the name, but the hotel right next to the Ripley's Awuarium can sometimes be had for a good price. It looked nice to me, and the river's right there, too. I think it's a Best Western, but if you search in Expedia, you should be able to find it. However, check other places for better prices (Hotel Kingdom, HotelMart USA, etc).

EDIT: I did a search. The one I was thinking of is the Best Western Twin Islands. A room in July on Expedia runs around 80.96 for AAA rate, 89.96 for Standard rate. Another really, really nice one is the Best western Zoder's Inn. it runs just a touch more. There also lots of others that cost less.

For the heck of it, I checked Shular Inn (http://www.shularinn-pigeonforge.com/index.php) for 7/12-7/15. They have a room for 69.95 then on their website.

Re: Gatlinburg, TN hotels/motels?

We will be in Gatlinburg the first of June so I've been checking into this myself. We prefer to stay in Gatlinburg rather than Pigeon Forge as it reminds us of Branson, MO...hotel, cheezy gift shop, restraunt, hotel, cheezy gift shop, etc.

The hotel Straitlover mentioned near the Aquarium is the Greystone Lodge at the Aquarium. For 2 adults and 1 child (12) the rate quoted was about $75/night. AAA rates it as a 3 diamond. We are actually staying in their cottages. The one we have is a 2 bedroom (1 king/1queen), 2 bath, with complete kitchen and living room. The cottage quote was $125 the first night and $150 the other nights. We have AAA so will save 10%.

There are 2 Best Westerns between stoplights 2 and 3 which were right around $70/night. Both are AAA rated 3 diamond. Another one I looked at was the Edgewater Hotel on the river road, AAA 3 diamond, $84/night for mountain view. The last one I checked into was the Hampton Inn near stoplight 9, AAA 3 diamond, and it was around $90/night. All of the locations have heated outdoor pools except for Edgewater which is an indoor/outdoor heated pool. The cottages we are staying in have pool priveleges at the Lodge hotel pool. Some of these have a continental breakfast. All are on the trolley route including the cottages which are located on Roaring Fork Road.

The last time we went to Gatlinburg (it was just my husband and me celebrating a delayed honeymoon) we stayed in a cabin owned by Chalets of Gatlinburg. It was nice...living room, kitchen, 1 bath, and a loft with a king bed and heart shaped jacuzzi tub. It had a deck with a grill, table and chairs, and a big hot tub. The cost wasn't bad...if I remember about $450 for 3 or 4 nights. They have a website - www.chaletsofgatlinburg.com if you want to see.

The toll free phone number for Gatlinburg's tourist info is 1-800-568-4748. You can request a brochure that will have a map and hotel locations and descriptions. It arrived within a few days.

If you go make sure to stop at the Applewood Barn Farmhouse Grill. It is awesome!!! We plan to eat there for a lunch/dinner and a breakfast. It is a winery and orchard also so it's a neat place to visit on it's own. The food is great and the prices are reasonable. It is actually located in Sevierville/Pigeon Forge. In Gatlinburg there is a great pancake place which I unfortunately can't remember the name of located between stoplight 3 and 4, but it is fantastic! It reminded me of the pancake place I always ate at when I lived in Holland.

I have my AAA Tour Book for 2004 at hand if you want any phone numbers of hotels or have any questions...just send me a private message and I'll give you what I can.

Re: Gatlinburg, TN hotels/motels?

My husband and I got married in Gatlinburg in March of 2001 and decided to stay at a chalet for our trip. We would highly recommend renting one. There were 3 couples including us that went and we got lucky and they were running a special so the cost for us was about $115 per couple for 3 nights. Great deal and had plenty of quiet. You can go to Gatlinburg.com and there is a link that will take you to the listings of all the websites for companies who have chalets for rent and most have pictures of the different chalets. We keep wanting to go back to Gatlinburg but haven't made it and won't be making it this year as I talked DH into doing a Disney vacation :-).....Whatever way you decide to go about staying there have a great time.Make sure you go to the aquarium the kids will LOVE it..you walk through a tunnel with the fish, sharks mainly, all around you.

Re: Gatlinburg, TN hotels/motels?

Thanks guys! I have narrowed it down to about 10 hotels! I plan everything to the nth degree, so it's hard for me just to pick a hotel without weighing every option!

The only hotel we've stayed at was the Glenstone Lodge. It was nice and clean, nothing fancy, just a hotel room. One thing I have to have is queen beds, we just can't sleep comfortably in a double bed. And we want to be in walking distance of the parkway so we don't have to drive as much. A good pool is important to the kids, and decent tv channels. That is my only beef with Glenstone, they had about 10 channels with no cable channels, and it drove me up the wall!

I checked into both those BW mentioned, and the Greystone, but they all have double beds. I'm also looking at the Edgewater, the Hampton, and several others. We liked the looks of the Clarion, but it wasn't available. There is a Bearskin Lodge that looks pretty nice, anyone ever stayed there?

Thanks for the suggestions, keep 'em coming!

Re: Gatlinburg, TN hotels/motels?

I just remembered there was a hotel at like stoplight 10 or around there that looks like a HUGE log cabin....if you would like I had taken a couple of pictures of the outside and I can scan them and send them to you if you are interested, just PM me and let me know....will look and see if I can find the name of it also.

I think that is the Bearskin Lodge you are talking about Mitzi. DH & I were in Gatlinburg recently, but our kids have never been.
