| Re: Two go wild and go west! THREAD 2 - UPDATED 5/8! [ QUOTE ] It has been great reading about your vacation!!! I was also very impressed with your photographs, especially the night ones! Do you mind if I ask what type of camera you have? [/ QUOTE ] We've got a Sony DSC-F828, which is actually no longer on the market. They discontinued it last year. |

| Re: Two go wild and go west! THREAD 2 - UPDATED 5/8! Sunday 16 April – part one: “is it 5.00 already?” and “how do we get out of here?” OK, so remember I said that 5.00 in the morning is not a time I’m very familiar with? Well, it’s one I’m rapidly getting use to right now. The wake up call went off a few minutes before 5.00 and this time it was an actual person. Very unusual these days. We were quickly up… well as quickly as you can be at that hour of the morning and got ready to head off for our 5.55 pick up for our Grand Canyon helicopter tour. Our first problem was getting out of the Venetian. We tried a couple of different route that were closed off, before we finally found one that was open, probably something to do with the couple of nightclubs there. Thank goodness for them. We made it over to Treasure Island in plenty of time and in fact we were a bit too early, as the bus there then wasn’t ours. We were promised that ours would be along shortly and it was. I couldn’t believe how many people were up this early to do the same thing, I did think that it might be quieter today with it being Easter Sunday and the morning after Saturday night, but not a bit of it. One more stop at the Mirage and we were off to the airport. On the way, they showed us a safety video and the classic part of it was the emergency way to remove the door. They show you how to do it and then ask that you don’t do it in flight. I would hope not! We were soon at the airport and checked in, when we were weighed again. We had already had to provide our weights, so presumably they needed to check that you hadn’t added too much to that in the meantime or that you hadn’t told a white lie. We had to leave the backpack, so we got out everything we needed and settled down to wait, munching our pretzels we’d bought earlier as a very unhealthy breakfast. We made our purchases in the gift shop of a beautiful book about the Grand Canyon and the obligatory fridge magnet (we got one everywhere we went) and waited some more before our name was called. It was, but was it took a while and in the meantime, they were calling out a few names who weren’t there and took a while to turn up. We got in a minivan and headed for the helicopter, where we met our pilot Michael and had our photo taken with him, which we later purchased. If I can find it, I’ll scan it in and add it to this report. We were all allocated seats according to our waits and I ended up with an inside seat. Mark did ask if we could swap, but was told we couldn’t. We were soon in the air and got some photos of the Strip as we took off. Just as well, as you’ll see later on…. ![]() ![]() ![]() I love this shot – that’s our helicopter that you can see silhouetted in this photo ![]() Then we were soaring over first the airport and then the whole of Vegas and you could finally get a feel for how big this place is. When you’re on vacation, you quite often think of the place as being the various attractions, but there’s always so much more to see than that and we were later told in the flight that Las Vegas is the fastest growing city in the USA, adding about 6,000 people every year. Soon we were out into the desert and passed over an old mine and then saw Boulder City, where gambling is banned. ![]() Then we saw the pylons that showed we near Hoover Dam and before we knew it, there it was. This is a another case of “I’m glad I took photos when I did” as Michael did promise that we would fly back over it to give those on the right hand side (i.e. us) a better view, but that never happened.
