The Commando Tour of the San Francisco Bay Area Report - COMPLETE Updated 12/5

The Commando Tour of the San Francisco Bay Area Report

The Cast of Characters (which I’ll limit):
Me (Marnie), 37, been to the area twice before
DH (Matt), 40, been three or more times to the area
DD (Alexa), 7, first trip to California
DS (Colin), 4, first trip to California

Intermittent appearances by Matt’s family: DSis, DBIL, DNep, DNie, DM, DF and a multitude of Dcousins

Dates: Tuesday, October 24th thru Monday, October 30th

Background:

This trip was a bit of an unexpected one. After our Grand Fiesta trip in August, and me knowingly losing my job in September, another vacation (and expense) wasn’t really planned. However, DH’s cousin’s son was getting married and wanted Colin to be a ring bearer. Not sure how that was going to work (if he would walk down the aisle), but I guess we’ll see. We did have a bit of a jump on the date, as they actually got married a year ago by a JotP, because they wanted to move in together and the parents said NO WAY (without being married)! They were now having a church wedding a year later. They’re only about 24 as well.

I forgot to mention that they live in Fairfield, CA, which is about 40 miles SW of Sacramento and about 60 miles NE of San Francisco (and 20 miles to Napa )! Great location!

Since Alexa can only miss 10 days of unexcused absences a year, there goes my December trip to Disney this year Thankfully, the couple sent out the date very early, so I was able to score a decent fare on Southwest and we’d fly into Sacramento. I also had a credit from our Grand Fiesta trip tickets ($584), which expired the end of September, but I had called them an got an extension. All they said I had to do was call when travel was completed and they’d credit me that amount (let’s hope so)!

I booked a Hampton Inn in Vacaville for our stay, as I got a good rate ($100/night) and that included a great FREE breakfast. I checked www.tripadvisor.com, and it had mainly good reviews. Then I tried to plan our days. We were flying to California on a Tuesday, so I figured we’d be on East coast time on Wednesday, so Monterey Bay Aquarium would be a good choice, since it was a 150 mile drive and we’d be up early anyway. Thursday was reserved for San Francisco, Friday was Napa (and a Jelly Belly factory tour), Saturday was the wedding, and Sunday was hanging out with Matt’s family (we were leaving early Monday morning).

Of course, the normal problems came up, mainly trying to schedule things with his family. His parents were actually fine. They were staying at his cousin’s house, and didn’t want to travel anywhere with us (except to Napa – Matt pretty much dragged them) so they were set. His sister and her plans (or lack thereof, or constantly changing) were another issue. She was flying into San Francisco, which was fine, so they’d get a hotel near the airport and drive down to Monterey and meet us there. Fine. Then she wanted to stay in Monterey for the night. We decided against it, as I didn’t want to be constantly packing and unpacking (lesson learned from the Grand Fiesta trip) and we’d just drive. She originally wanted to stay in Napa instead of Vacaville, which again we told her fine, but we weren’t staying there (they ended up staying in Vacaville as well).

For us, this trip was about seeing as much as we could in the San Francisco Bay Area (in about 3 days) while still spending a good amount of time with Matt’s cousins, who we haven’t seen in 10 years (when they came east for our wedding)!

Of course, the weekend before we leave, I start getting a cold, and a week before we left, Alexa had a double ear infection. She finished her meds, and claimed she felt fine, however she was still coughing up a storm. Colin and Matt thankfully were fine.

Would I survive the cold? And would the Governator make an appearance?? Stay tuned to find out!

Coming Up Next……..I now know why they say babies ears hurt during flight

I always look forward to your trip reports. I hope your kids enjoyed the Monterey Bay Aquarium as much as mine did-I think it's a great place.

Sounds great. I've been to San Francisco, but never seen the suburbs.

I can't wait for more.
