It's a long time for a simple re-decoration. There have to be some serious business goals - increased business, increased efficiencies in the kitchen, stuff like that. Several possibilities occur to me.

The kitchens are getting a total overhaul
One or more of the private dining rooms will be added to the main dining room
The reception area will be reworked so its not a traffic bottleneck.
Some or all of the above, and more.

I agree - definitely some serious work going on there. I'm just relieved we're still Ok for our December booking and, hopefully if our plans pan out for 2013, we can enjoy whatever they've done later on next year....

I read somewhere that the kitchens will have "interactive technology" and it originally said they would open "late summer 2013". It will be interesting to see what happens!

Well, I guess I'm glad we decided to skip it for our April trip! I was thinking of having my birthday dinner there but we opted to skip signatures and do the Illuminations cruise instead.
