I have heard that The Sword and the Stone Ceremony is returning to Magic Kingdom. Has anyone heard about this or happened to see it lately? I read it has taken place in the park already.
The word is out there, but all reports can be traced back to a single report at MiceChat. In that report, a 4-piece band was on hand to play a song from "The Sword in the Stone" while the lucky guest proves his/her strength (or descent from Uther Pendragon). No Merlin in sight. Apparently, either Merlin is too busy with Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom (even Merlin has a hard time being in two places at once), or the folks at the Casting Office haven't been able to track him down. (Hint to Casting Office: Merlin's living backwards in time, so he won't be able to check his voice mail unless, maybe, you call him yesterday, tomorrow.)
There's no reason to doubt an eyewitness account, so we'll just have to see if it's a frequent or infrequent thing. My own suspicion is that it'll be less frequent than the ceremony with Merlin, simply because so many more CMs are involved. Special magic, if you will, rather than routine magic.

Though I'd be thrilled if this were true, Disney seems to be phasing out references to the old movies that people aren't familiar with, so an investment in this one is surprising.

I agree with Dave about "special" magic vs. "routine". A friend's son pulled on the sword on their trip last year and were very surprised that he was able to pull it up - he was given a pin or medal and was claimed king of the park for the day or something of that nature. No Merlin sighting either but still very cool. Definitely worth encouraging your kids to try their hand at the sword just in case - at the very least it's always a cute picture!
And Carousel96, Merlin plays a big part in the Sorcerer's of the MK game as do a number of older characters/villains so maybe there's hope yet
