| frustrating and sad. Video Has anyone heard this 911 call from the monorail accident.? Now, I don't work in emergency services, but something seems wrong to me. 3 different calls to report the collision, and three times the dispatcher askes if there are any injuries. What I'm wondering is, if in all that time did he not have the EMT's on the way?. The dispatcher kept asking pple to go and look if there was anyone injured, but in this recording he never assured anyone that help was coming. When minutes count, it seems to me that some were wasted here. Your Thoughts....... |

| I live near Detroit and there have been a lot of problems with 911 dispatchers, so it does not surprise me. I'm sure they had already sent the call out to fire/ambulance to get there asap but it would of been nice to let the ppl on the phone know.

| He may have needed an idea of how many emergency vehicles to send which is why he kept asking about injuries? - but it wasn't the sort of response I would have wanted if I had been a caller. |

| I can understand asking - medical, fire, etc so they have an idea who to send out initially. But come on! Seems the ball was dropped here. 9-1-1 is suppose to calm fears, not add to the chaos! That's a long 2 1/2 minutes!

| I agree that it is both frustrating and sad, I can't believe the operator was asking if anyone was injured. If there was a head on collision, yeah, there are definately going to be injuries. And every second counts. Some reasurance would have been nice.

| That was hard to even listen to. I seriously hope they immediately sent emergency vehicles and were only asking about injuries to get an idea of how many might be involved so they could possibly send back up vehicles, but man, the way it sounds so casual is frightening. (and yes, they are likely trained to remain that calm... ugh) |

| My hubby is an emergency dispatcher and an EMT. They ask that question because A: it is protocal. You have to gage the seriousness of the accident. B: You want to make sure you are sending enough emergency personnel C: If people are calling from different parts of the train you can find out just how seriously people maybe hurt. The dispatchers are trained to sound that calm and casual. It helps keep whoever is on the line that everything is ok. You do not want to be scared and panicky and have your emergency dispatcher sound scared and panicky. No matter what the dispatcher has to remain calm. Believe me help was dispatched right way. More info you have the better emergency personnel can help Usually there are 2 dispatchers working at least where my hubby works. One works getting info from caller and the other talks to the emergency personnel responding to the call don't get me wrong there are people in this field that don't belong there but there are ALOT who work hard at their jobs. It is not the easiest job on the planet. There are a lot times you have to stay up all night to answer the phone and get people the help they need. You have to get info from uncooperative callers who are panicked and scared for themselves or loved ones.

| The 911 operators are trained to remain calm Most likely the emergency personnel was dispatched but it is EXTREMELY helpful to know if there are actually any injuries (just because it was a head on does not automatically mean there were - there are a lot of other factors to consider), the extent of the injuries and the possible number of people injured. This is especially true when the accident scene is not easily accessible by all the emergency equipment like with the monorails. Equipment may need to be carried up flights of stairs, elevators, through lobbies and such just to get to the injured people. It's better to at least have an idea from an eyewitness of what may be immediately necessary at the scene. Just my input as a former police officer, first responder/paramedic.
