Hmmmm . . . well, according to the Wall Street Journal, he was not fired. He resigned, as is kind of obvious if you read his letter.

I just read this myself on another site. Doesn't really matter if he was fired or if they had a falling out and he quit. It's bad news.

While Dick Cook seems like a very nice man and big Disney supporter, this doesn't mean that he was a great studio chairman. I remember the circumstances the last time the studios was floundering and they fired Nina Jacobsen, his second in command. It seemed like she took the bullet for him, and that her firing was very tackily done. That said, I wish him the best and hope that he will still play a part in the Disney community. Insiders say that his replacement will probably come from within the company, but may not be someone from the studio. Let's hope it's a very creative person and not from the pencil pushing business section.

I agree with you there. I love Disney but I am sick of their strong focus on business and not so strong focus on what Disney actually is all about.

I think it's fair to say that the Disney company is "about" making money by giving folks great entertainment. Some people in the company tend to focus on the "making money" part, and others tend to focus on "great entertainment," but everyone in the company has to think about both ends of that equation (studio heads like Cook are in charge of spending huge amounts of money and making the deals that go with it, but have to put that money on projects likely to deliver great entertainment, or otherwise the money doesn't come back into the coffers). As consumers, we naturally focus on "great entertainment," and if we feel we're not getting as much as we'd like, we complain about the money people.

I haven't followed Cook's career all too closely, but I know he's been criticized from time to time, as has anyone in his kind of position. I felt his days were numbered after the Pixar acquisition, simply because it's a common pattern - the old guard may stay through the transition period, but rarely stays forever.

I wonder how this is going to effect the company, very often when one important figure is thrown out it effects how the company functions and how it looks to the public.

Alright...I guess I'm the odd one out. But I didn't know of someone named "Dick Cook" and I thought someone was posting about a mean chef getting fired from Disney. This is a very interesting story, but my misinterpreted headline was more interesting

early retirements are generally the equivalent of being fired. i'm sure cook couldn't be 'fired' per se, but he could have his contract bought out or pushed out.

and officially, both sides would be very cordial about it. no sense in burning bridges or putting another potential employer off by eagerly talking bad about your previous employer in such a visible position.
