There is a difference is having the same ride in different parks across the country. But this is all still at the same resort. You are comparing ALL of WDW to just one little Six Flags Park. If Six Flags had a resort with more then one park in the resort, I doubt they would have a Superman ride in each park within that resort.

I'll agree that both rides are reported to be based on the Omnimover system (so I didn't mean to have implied otherwise.)

However, I stand by my impression that the ride mechanism is used very uniquely for each ride:
  • Buzz Lightyear is a smooth "pull" through the track and the guests control its yaw (the turning side to side) to aim at the cut-out "real" tragets. The only stopping occurs when the CMs have to load in a guest needing assistance at the loading point.
  • TSMM is sort of a stop-and-go version of the teacups -- you spin around curves and then slide into place in front of a stationary screen to shoot at cinematic "virtual" targets for 10 seconds before spinning off to another area of the carnival. (TSMM has a separate area for loading guests needing assistance and they are seamlessly added to the queue of vehicles waiting to join in the fun -- no unexpected stops due to guest load-in.)

Yes, the goal is the same -- get the highest score from hitting targets
Yes, the source movie is the same
Yes, the ride mechanism is the same

No, the tone is very different
No, the ride mechansim is used very differently
No, the shooter changes its "ammo" with each new turn in the carnival

Not arguing -- just stating again that I believe them to be quite different, despite how you read my initial response.

I am not talking about the ride vehicles. I am talking about the attraction itself. BOTH are the same. you do the same thing in both, You try to shoot targets. Nothing more.

So you are saying that just because you go from shooting lasers to shooting darts or rings or whatever, it's not the same? WRONG You are still doing the EXACT same thing in both rides. You are sitting in a spinning ride vehicle trying to hit targets as you go by.

How about we make a new boat ride with little dancing animals all singing a catchy song about being friends in this small world. That would be totally different from any other ride at Disney right?

I'm hoping to keep this a discussion (as per the guidelines of the board) so please allow me to respond in kind. I'm happy to "discuss," but want no part in an argument as I'm keen on PassPorter boards staying a pleasant, helpful place where its members respect each other's opinions and treat each other with kindness and tact.

Well, BTMRR and Space Mountain (not to mention RnR or Everest) are essentially similar rides going by that criteria. I'd hate to lose any of them because they are similar to another existing ride. I foresee your argument that they have different themes... but it's still germane to my response that there's room for all these attractions that have similar ride experiences. (Same goes with Great Movie Ride and Ellen's Energy Adventure or Its a Small World, Mexico's Grand Fiesta Tour, Maelstrom, and Living with the Land.)

Obviously, the popularity of both Toy Story rides means that a great number of Disney's guests feel the draw of the Toy Story characters and don't object to the existence of them both -- nor did Disney's incredible research team when this idea was first blue-skied. The responses to this thread bear that up quite blatantly.

Again, I like a good discussion. Let's keep it in that vein.

I kind of look at it this way . . .

If you don't like the idea that, quite obviously, there is still enough interest in Toy Story to warrant multiple similar (but not "identical") attractions in different parks based on different characters from the franchise, don't ride the rides or pay them any attention. Simple as that. No use arguing in circles over the "similarity" of the ride mechanism/purpose.

Although I don't think there could be too much Toy Story, I believe they probably will come out with more Pixar attractions down the road. They are always changing things up down there.!
