| An Ode and an Idea Ode to Cookies
An exciting thing happens as Christmas time draws near,
My oven runs plum full of sweets
Is yours the same as here?
I thought it would be fun to list the traditions we bakers gift
When vanilla, sugar, butter, nuts combine
And of course, the flour sift
Tender crispy cookies waiting patiently on a plate
Shiny sanding sugar gleaming
Waiting just for fate
Until the hand of a loved one snaps one up to eat
On the way to school or work
My “Merry Christmas” is complete
Okay, okay, so I'm not Tara. I find food such a fascinating thing! Here we are weeks before Christmas. Not too long now and I'll be baking up a storm for friends and family like many of you. So, it got me wondering. I'm sure many of you have family favorites. Traditions that everyone looks forward to. You know, the ones where your family says, "Oh my gosh! I love these!" WEll, my Passporter friends, I can't bake for you, but you're a wonderful part of my day and we sure can share traditions, recipes, and the stories that come with them as a way of "baking for each other".
So my Passporter family
Which ones do you bake?
The recipes old and new
The ones you make and take
A quick recipe or ones that take a while
But most of all the special ones
The ones that make you smile |

I make all kinds of cookies - probably the most notable being my Gourmet DOuble Chocolate Chunk cookies. The recipe is from the Main Street Bakeshop. I add more chocolate then called for though. Recipe |

| Re: An Ode and an Idea This cookie isn’t a “cookie” by standard definition. It’s fried until golden brown and dusted with sugar to give it just the right amount of sweetness. My grandma has been making these for as long as I can remember.I'm nearly 40, so that's a long time! Plates piled high with these were common gifts for my brother and me growing up as they were our favorite cookie during the holiday. My grandma is Polish and my grandpa was Ukrainian, so I’m not sure of the origin, I just can speak to their tastiness. It’s the one cookie I think of that makes it Christmas. Grandma used to fry these in peanut oil, but we’ve got nut allergies, so it’s vegetable oil for us.
Grandma’s Khrusty (pronounced Hroo-stee)
6 eggs
3 c. flour
4 t. baking powder
¼ t. salt
1 t. vanilla
Beat eggs well and add remaining ingredients. Knead on a floured board until smooth. Cover dough with a cloth. Set aside for 1-2 hours. Roll 1/8 inch thick using only a small amount at a time. Cut dough into long strips about 1 ¼ inches wide. Cut strips into 3 inch lengths. Slit each piece into the center, pulling one end through to form a loose loop. Cover to prevent drying. Deep fry in oil or shortening at 350 degrees until both sides are golden. Drain on paper towels. When cool, dust with confectioner’s sugar.

| Re: An Ode and an Idea Every year on Christmas Eve my kids and I make Christmas cookies for Santa. They are usually sugar cookies so they can cut out shapes and decorate them with colored icing. We never eat them all, but we have a good time doing it. |

| Re: An Ode and an Idea Christmas cut out sugar cookies. We make and decorate them the day after T-day with my Sister and her kids. We make them again just before Christmas to give away and for Santa. We also make Peanut Butter kisses. |

| Re: An Ode and an Idea I haven't had time to bake the last few years. Working at UPS in December just isn't fun. Not much spare time for baking. I'm going to try this year, even if it is only one type, and if I do, it will be rainbow cookies. I love them. |
