Today is National Coquilles St. Jacques Day - which is SCALLOPS basically cooked with mushrooms!

1832 Philip Danforth Armour was born. An American industrialist, he was a pioneer in use of refrigeration and meat canning. Armour & Co. helped make Chicago the meatpacking capital of the world.

1861 John Stevens Henslow died. This British clergyman and botanist was a mentor of Charles Darwin. To get farmers to apply scientific methods, he gave lectures on the fermentation of manure. He also showed Irish farmers how to get starch from rotten potatoes during the potato famine of 1845-1846.

1866 Charles Elmer Hires invents root beer.

1947 Sir Frederick Gowland Hopkins died. He discovered what we now all 'vitamins,' essential nutrients needed to maintain health.

2005 The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Michigan and New York could not prohibit people from buying wine online from out of state wineries. Some 23 other states have similar laws that presumably would also be affected by the ruling.

TODAY’S FOOD QUOTE
“Good bread is the most fundamentally satisfying of all foods; and good bread with fresh butter, the greatest of feasts.”
James Beard (1903-1985)

DID YOU KNOW? - Food Trivia
Halibut is a the largest flatfish, with large fish weighing over 200 pounds. They look like overgrown flounder. The largest recorded halibut weighed 726 pounds and was over 15 feet long. They prefer deep, cold water, and have a life span of 40 years or more. There are two species, an Atlantic and a Pacific species, the Pacific species
the smaller of the two. Halibut are white, lean and firm fleshed fish with a surprisingly delicate flavor. Halibut may be substituted for turbot in recipes. Halibut liver produces high-quality cod-liver-oil and is rich in vitamins.

So how do you like your scallops?? I LOVE them battered and deep fried AND cooked in garlic butter. But the other night we went to an event that had them wrapped in bacon as an appetizer and they were DELICIOUS! I guess you could say I LOVE scallops!
