| Scott, the trick will be not to deprive yourself. As for the Gatorade (yak), that can go unless you're competing in the Olympics and didn't bother to tell anyone... Decaf coffee, made CORRECTLY is still very yummy. I, personally, like Gevalia and get rave reviews from guests (who have NO idea it's decaf...) Get you a French press and make it at home yourself (better for your wallet, too), but be sure not to load it up with sugar and cream, if you do. Get you some stevia powder (I like the Now brand) and cut your sugar in half with it. As for your water...try the TrueLemon thing, it is REAL lemon and SO good in a bottle of water with a sprinkle of stevia. Your wallet and your waistline (and blood pressure and cholesterol...) will thank you and we'll have you training your flying monkeys for YEARS to come!

| Try not to think of it as "give up" but more as "substitute. How about making a pot of "half caff" or drinking Propel (25 cal) instead of Gatorade? And if you just can't do it than why not hit those San Francisco hills and start walking!

| I've never drunk coffee, but I did have to give up caffeine about 27 years ago. That doesn't mean I don't periodically have a caffeinated coke, but I do so very, very seldom. Now my body simply goes crazy when I have more than one coke, but my body is also much healthier without it. Try decreasing gradually which is what I did. I still had a few headaches, but it's been worth it.

| Man, I just heard on the news that SF is the fittest large city: ACSM | San Francisco Tops List of America's Fittest Cities I stopped drinking soda (except maybe a small one at the cinema) and it really helped me lose some weight and feel better. And Slim-fast has helped. I have 2-3 cups of coffee in the morning. I only have water (and /or beer) when we go out to eat. If I am at a conference or training, I have to have a cup or two at lunch, or it is pointless to even be there... If you want to make lasting change, you have to taper down (or up, as the case may be). Good luck, we're rootin for ya!

| I vote for cutting down the coffee - but only one cup. Three a day is fine but I agree on cutting out the gatorade - but only because of the sugar. The coffee is fine if you balance it with water! Just replace the gatorade with water and you'll be good (if you hate plain water, try the sugar free additions like crystal light - whatever it takes to drink more water the better!).

| I voted for cutting down on coffee. Don't do it quickly, but cut down slowly. Maybe you could start by using half caf coffee. My gastric surgeon told me that a small cup of coffee every day is OK. He also told me that caffeine can dehydrate me and that I'd have to drink lots more water if I drank coffee. It's hard getting in the recommended 64 ounces of water, so now I drink only a small iced coffee every few days or so. I used to drink about 3 or 4 cans of diet Coke every day and have a medium coffee, too. I've cut out all the soda and the coffee is now a small. I've replaced it with water and I'm surprised that I don't really miss it. I did this slowly so my body could adjust to the lack of caffeine. Occasionally, I get really groggy and that's when I'll have a coffee. Good luck! |

| Sounds like a good start Scott. I wouldn't give up the Gatorade if you truly like it. It isn't hurting you especially if you only have one a day. Everybody here is pulling for you! ![]()
